Step 1 Purchase bottles that are clear and fasten securely. Clear, colored plastic is fine, but cloudy, opaque plastic won t pass. However, pre-packed manufacturer products may be in original packaging. According to the TSA, every bottle must be 3.4 ounce (100ml) bottle or less (by volume) ; 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag; 1 bag per passenger placed in screening bin. Step 2 Make a must have list of liquids to take in your carry-on, and isolate your packing to these things. Many items are obtainable in your destination city, minimizing the need to bring them on the plane. If it s something that the hotel may have, or the drugstore stocks, leave it home. Step 3 Purchase 3 oz. travel bottles. Ken Walker of All Business recommends purchasing as many bottles as will fit into a quart-sized bag. These bottles may then be filled with a variety of liquids, including alcohol, body wash, shampoo or perfume. Step 4 Purchase travel sized bottles of items that must be sterile for use. Contact lens solution must be purchased pre-packaged, or there s a risk of eye infection. Don t attempt to repackage medical supplies in travel bottles, because cleanliness is key. Tape the tops of the bottles shut before sealing in the bag. Planes shake and rattle, and even the tightest top can pop open. A piece of tape over the top cuts the risk of a wet mess upon your arrival. Label your 3 oz. bottles clearly with black permanent marker on a white label. They ll be easier to use, and security personnel will appreciate the clarity if something catches the agent s eye.
