#Old Centre travel guide

Contents

The Old Centre is the medieval heart of Amsterdam.

Understand [ edit ]

Most visitors arrive in Amsterdam at the Central Station, and then walk south over the streets Damrak and Rokin. In medieval times, both these streets actually were the final end of the Amstel River. They used to cut Amsterdam in half: east of the Damrak-Rokin-axis was the Old Side (Oudezijde ) of Amsterdam, the oldest part of the city dating from the 13th century. West of the Damrak-Rokin-axis was the New Side (Nieuwezijde ), which was constructed later, but still dates from the late Middle Ages. Now Damrak and Rokin are the glue that hold both sides of the city together, and while walking there, you probably won't even notice that this once was a river.

The division between the Old Side and the New Side never faded away however, and both have a lot to offer for visitors. The Old Side is home to the Nieuwm ... Read more »

Expedia started the year by acquiring its erstwhile marketing partner, Travelocity, and is currently on its way to acquire Orbitz Worldwide, the third largest OTA in North America. TripAdvisor recently acquired the personal journal application provider, ZeTrip and launched a new feature called “Neighbourhoods” to help travelers better navigate in popular tourist destinations.

Planning a holiday to Portugal? Read our guide to the best regions, including expert advice on Lisbon, Sintra, Porto, Alentejo, and the Algarve. By Mary Lussiana, Telegraph Travel Portugal expert.

Hidden coves and limestone rocks resembling abstract sculptures rising out of the blue ocean run all along the coast, bordering the golden sands that stretch from the west coast with its wild waves – a paradise for surfers – to the more gentle central and eastern Algarve, where long, accessible beaches alternate with mere handkerchiefs of sand at the end of dizzyingly steep steps carved into the rocks.

Getting there

British Airways  (0844 493 0787; ba.com ) operates from Heathrow to Lisbon (from £109 return) and from Gatwick to Faro (from £134 return). #Patagonia Travel Guide

Plan Your Patagonia Vacation

Patagonia is a wild and rugged land filled with breathtaking landscapes and eye-catching wildlife. There are few other places in the world where you can feel such a great isolation and vast emptiness and yet see waters teeming with wildlife; visit gauchos living on windswept estancias; and get so close to ancient glaciers that you can actually walk inside these ice cathedrals. Spanning over

a million square kilometers Patagonia has many worlds to discover.

Atlantic Patagonia is where the low pampas meet the ocean. It's a land of immense panoramic horizons and a coastline of bays, inlets, and peninsulas abounding with birds and marine wildlife. The region is most famous for Península Valdés, a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site with southern right whales, orcas, elephant seals, and sea lions. There are seemingly endless dirt roads where you won't see another person or vehicle for hours—only guanacos, rheas ... Read more »

#Online Travel Bookings in Canada Continue to Rise - What Will This Mean For You?

According to a recent PhoCusWright study that looks at Canadian online travel trends, the number of trips booked online continues to rise. In fact, the penetration level for online travel bookings jumped by more than one third in 2009 amid a global recession. Although the total travel spend for Canada was down by 7 percent, the actual number of online transactions rose.

Here are three things to expect as more Canadian travelers not only look but book trips online:

  1. Better content With the ability to stream higher quality video, travellers will come to expect enhanced online content across the board. Researching a trip will involve a virtual experience, allowing customers to get a much better sense of what they can expect in, and from, their destination.
  2. Customized promotions We ve already witnessed a marketing explosion from travel companies in the online ... Read more »

#Paris City Breaks

Paris is an alluring destination for a city break. From its chic shops and fashionable cafes, to its famous museums and iconic sights, there’s plenty to take you beyond a short weekend break. If you haven’t already done it, climbing the Eiffel Tower is on most people’s must-do lists. Go at night, when it’s less-crowded, and you’ll see sweeping views of illuminated Paris. For something a bit more low key, wander streets around Place de la Bastille to discover the areas wonderful bakeries and cafés. We recommend Boulangerie Bazin with its award-winning breads and pastries.

Art lovers flock to The Louvre Museum for its huge art collection that includes the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo. Housed in the former historic palace it’s an impressive sight on the outside too. #Patagonia (Argentina)

Understand Edit

Patagonia is massive, beautiful and desolate. You can go extraordinary distances without seeing much, other than the occasional guanaco. As such you should always be prepared for whatever chance may throw at you. If driving, have spare blankets, food and water in case of break downs as the nearest mechanic may not be able to reach you in a day. If hitchhiking, have tents and appropriate gear in case you don't make it to the next town before nightfall. When in the backcountry be sure to follow all rules and guidelines to ensure that damage to the native environment is minimized as much as possible as there are many endangered species in the area. If you get in trouble help may not be able to reach you quickly, so prepared to take care of yourself!

#Peru Travel Tips

Peru is one of the most famous and popular countries in South America. Most people flock here to hike the Inca Trail and see Machu Picchu. Everything else takes a back seat. Lima and Cusco also get some minor attention but there is far more in this country that just these three major sites. Come explore the jungles, see the Amazon, head to Lake Titicaca, or to the beaches. Learn about local culture, try the coca tea. In short, stay longer and see lots. There s more to Peru than Machu Picchu.

Typical Costs

Accommodation Budget hotels or hostels are in great supply in Peru. A dorm room costs between $8-15 USD per night. Most double private rooms with a bathroom are between $25-35 USD for hostels, and around $30-50 USD for a budget hotel.

#Smoking laws in South Africa - Travel Tips - South African Tourism

Smoking is banned in public areas in South Africa.

SXC.hu

South Africa became one of the first countries in the world to ban smoking in public places in 2000 when it introduced its Tobacco Products Control Amendment Act. The act put a serious dent in the smoking culture in South Africa. as it prohibited smoking in restaurants, pubs, shopping centres and offices where there was no separate, enclosed smoking room.

The South African smoking laws were tightened even further in 2009 when the government banned smoking in partially enclosed public places such as covered patios, verandas, balconies, walkways and parking areas, as well as smoking in cars where there were children under the age of 12 present. Children under the age of 18 were also prohibited from entering designated smoking areas and purchasing cigarettes.

#Rental Car Deals

REUTERS/Jason Redmond Travelers walk past rental car companies at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport in SeaTac, Washington

As arduous as air travel might be, getting around town after landing can be even worse. Many travelers turn to public transit, others hop in cabs, but most rely on a good old-fashioned rental cars. In fact, the car rental business become a $25 billion industry in 2013 .

Unfortunately, there's a bewildering array of rental companies, locations, cars, and optional features that can affect the price of a rental.  As a result, the actual cost of a rental can end up much higher than advertised.

In response, some travelers have turned to the simplified user experience of car sharing programs, such as Zipcar. However, unless you're renting for less than day, car sharing programs are far more expensive than major car rental agencies, Consumer Reports Senior Editor  Jeff Blyskal told Business Insider.

#Rome Highlights - Lonely Planet

History, human genius and the hot midday sun have conspired to make Rome one of the world’s most seductive and thrilling cities.

Rome, the Capital

But there’s more to Rome than history, fine art and great food. Rome is Italy’s capital and largest city, and while history reverberates all around, modern life is lived to the full. Rome is Italy’s political and religious heartbeat and the twin presence of government and Church dominates the city. Many city-centre palazzi house government offices while over in the Vatican the dome of St Peter’s Basilica serves to remind everyone of the pope’s presence. Political intrigue is thick in the air and as tourists tuck into their pasta politicians hunker down to hatch plots over spaghetti and wine.

Why I Love Rome

By Duncan Garwood, Author

Even after more than a decade of living in Rome, the city continues to amaze me. I still get a buzz every time I see the Co ... Read more »

It is safe to say that outside of Paris, the first French locale that comes to mind would be any city or town in the region of Provence. There is so much that fascinates potential visitors — the Mediterranean coastline, the backcountry, breathtaking scenery — and fires up the imagination of anyone who dreams of coming to Provence. Located in the southeastern part of the country, Provence has deep Greek and Roman roots, whose legacy in this region of France left behind incredible remains.

Perhaps one of the greatest cities to visit in this region is Marseille. The second most densely populated city in France (the first being Paris), it lies on the Mediterranean coast and once acted as a crucial trading point of the French Empire, as well as functioning as a grand naval po ...
