In addition to earning a living and helping their clients arrange trips and vacations, travel agents can earn travel discounts for hotel stays, car rentals, cruises and tours.

While many travel agents work for travel agencies, some make the choice to strike out on their own or open their own business. Often, this choice is related to an agent s desire to set his or her own hours and determine the other conditions of their own employment. If you decide to become a travel agent‎, keep in mind ... Get Paid to Be Pampered

Dear Reader,

I rarely plan much before a vacation. But whenever I hop in the car for a road trip or look for last-minute flights, I have one thing in the back of my mind: Spa-ing!

On my visit to Kauai I found myself enjoying a 2-hour lomilomi massage (a traditional Hawaiian treatment) with two practitioners-- so four hands instead of two. That detail alone equaled pure bliss. But the treatment room itself was blissful with French Doors that opened toward the ... Read more »

The Nursing School: Travel Nursing

Travel Nursing

A nursing job which is becoming more and more popular among nurses these days is as a travel nurse. The travel nursing industry began more than 20 years ago. There were a few agencies which began to offer hospitals a short-term solution for their staffing shortage and seasonal fluctuations of the population. Especially in places like Arizona, California, Florida and Texas the demand was high. Nowadays the demand of travel nurses is still high, because of the staffing problems which still exist in the United States.

As a travel nurse you can choose to travel all over the country or if you rather stay near your hometown you can also choose to have an assignment in your local area. Another choice which you will have as a travel nurse is the period of time you want to stay in a certain area. Some nurses prefer t ... Read more »

Huai Mae Khamin Waterfall

The main draw of Khuean Srinagarindra National Park, Huai Mae Khamin is a seven-tier waterfall flowing down some 1.8 kilometres of hillside blanketed in bamboo and banyan. Between the main tiers are countless smaller rock shelves, smoothed by the flow over untold time. Hot-tub-size travertine pools emerge here and there, with larger swimming holes found at many of the main tiers. On a Sunday visit, we encountered no more than two dozen other people at the lower four tiers. The next day, we had the upper three tiers all to ourselves. Read full story

Time for a change I think.

When I initially set out on my Afritrex expedition at the end of December 2007 I'd decided that setting up a blog would be a fantastic way for my friends and family to keep up-to-date with my experiences and to follow my progress around the African continent.

Since then blogs and blogging applications, widgets, add- ons etc have moved on in leaps and bounds and it's now possible to add posts by text, video or speech, through your desktop machine, laptop or iPhone.

With the help of my web-guru Ben Patterson, I've decided to design and build a new blog which will become my record of exactly what the job of Island Caretaker involves, some behind the scenes snippets and a blog of what the next six months of my life will be all about.

There will be future updates to this page every so often but for now I'll be concentrating on my new web-blog which can be found at:

Andrew Eames Something Different for the Weekend: 52 Seasonal Breaks for the Imaginative Traveller (Bradt Travel Guide)

Great value adventure! Would recommend.

I recently returned from a great Nile Safari Trip with Imagiantive Traveller

Arriving in Cairo

Arrival was great! I was met by a driver who was holding up an Imaginative Traveller sign - he was waiting at the baggage reclaim for us. On arrival there were also another 3 solo female travellers who were joining the tour, all were very friendly in their mid-thirties and I felt like I would bond with them for the week away. Once we had met the driver he accompanied us through visa control - he took our money for visas and got our stamps for us to avoid the queues etc. It was all a very smooth and comfortable process. We then took a small mini-bus for the short transfer to the hotel - which was probably one of the most terrifying moments of my life! If you have never been to C ... Read more »

Booking a flight online is relatively simple and convenient. However, knowing when to book your flight to get the cheapest deal while also avoiding the disappointment of not being able to take your chosen flight is more difficult. It requires knowledge of how airlines price their tickets and how this affects you, the consumer.

Best Day Of The Week

Tuesdays and Wednesdays are generally when fares are at their lowest. This is because airlines often launch special discounts on a Monday evening in an attempt to secure sales for the coming week after observing demand through the day. Competitors then tend to lower their prices to match these discounts, meaning more options for the consumer. By Thursday, or at the latest Friday, most, if not all, of these discounted tickets have been taken.

In addition, airlines will often lower prices after they have sold a number of their standard priced tickets. Fewer people ... Read more »

Best Travel Backpack For Backpacking Abroad

Ahh, yes. Travel backpacks. I m glad companies are finally starting to design backpacks specifically for travel. In the past people traveling to Europe, Southeast Asia, South America, and wherever else their spirits took them were forced to use a normal hiking backpack that was designed for all-day hikes in the wilderness. However, for city-hopping via train, plane, and bus these backpacks fell short in the urban environment.

Reasons Why Traditional Hiking Backpacks Aren t Ideal for Travel

On my first trip to Europe I did a ton of research before I bought my backpack. I went to about five outdoors stores and visited dozens of websites before I finally decided on the Osprey Atmos 50. It was a great backpack. It was lightweight, comfortable, and it would have been amazing for taking long hikes in the back-country. The Benefits of Purchasing a Multi-Trip Annual Travel Insurance Policy

Updated: June 27, 2011

While it may not actually be a secret, many people are unfamiliar with the annual, multi-trip travel insurance policy. Unlike single-trip policies that only cover you for one trip, an annual travel insurance policy offer you emergency medical coverage for every trip you take within 12 months of buying your policy.

Add it up and save

At first glance, getting annual travel insurance may seem like overkill, but just think of how many times you may have travelled in the last year: family vacations, business trips (get tips for business travellers ), spring break getaways, and weekend jaunts across the border for shopping or sporting events. Add it all up and often an annual policy works out to be cheaper than purchasing a single-trip policy per trip in a year and in some cases, it's even cheaper than buying just one!

Switzerland Travel Guide

Whether you visit Switzerland for its bucolic scenery or dramatic mountain ranges, there’s nothing forgettable about this European nation. Travel to Switzerland and discover a country that is unofficially divided into four linguistic regions—the surrounding nations of France, Germany, Italy, Austria and Liechtenstein gladly sharing their mother tongues with their landlocked neighbor. Several geographic regions formed by the famed Swiss Alps in the southern region and the Jura Mountains, which line Switzerland’s western border. But even with all these geographic and linguistic divisions, the Swiss have truly embraced their melting pot culture with most citizens congregating in the major cities of Geneva, Bern and Zürich on the country’s centrally-located Swiss Plateau, where most of those planning Switzerland travel will most likely spend a great amount of time. In these major cities, visitors will see how the Swiss built their unrival ... Read more »

Introducing Tasmania

Some say islands are metaphors for the heart. Isolation mightn't be too good for romance, but Tasmania has turned remoteness into an asset, with unique wilderness and hip arts and food scenes.

Why I Love Tasmania

By Charles Rawlings-Way Meg Worby

As Tasmania's biggest fans, we've come to appreciate the island in different ways. Charles spent his childhood in Hobart. careening between the beach and the bush. It was the '70s, man – Tasmania was a magical, laid-back place to be a kid. Lured by the island's natural beauty, Meg arrived in the new century to walk the Overland Track, then moved on to the cafes, the bookshops, the pubs… These days we visit Tasmania every year, and are thrilled to see MONA firing the cultural scene and turning Australia 's understanding of Tasmania on its head.

Tasmania

Tasmania is Australia 's only island state. It has the smallest land area of any state and the smallest population, with roughly 500,000 inhabitants. It is separated from the Australian mainland by a body of water called the Bass Strait that has isolated it for thousands of years.

Understand Edit

Geography Edit

Tasmania is the smallest of Australia's six states, with an area of 68,401km² (26,410 square miles). It is comparable in size to Ireland or the US state of West Virginia. Tasmania is separated from mainland Australia by the Bass Strait, from New Zealand by the Tasman Sea, and otherwise surrounded by the Southern Ocean. It is located right in the pathway of the notorious "Roaring Forties" winds that encircle the globe.

Most of Tasmania's population is concentrated around the south east and north coasts. The Midlands (the area between Hobart and Launcestion) is primarily used for agriculture. The Huon Va ... Read more »

Sydney Travel Guide

Sydney perennially occupies the upper ranks of T+L readers’ favorite cities. And why not? Impressively cosmopolitan, almost embarrassingly handsome—but as breezy and casual as any sunsoaked harbor town—Australia’s largest city could win any visitor over on looks and climate alone. But you’ll also find a surfeit of cultural riches, from first-rate museums to colorful ethnic enclaves (and, of course, that famous opera house). Add innovative restaurants, verdant parks, and glittering beaches, and Sydney feels worlds away from the hardscrabble British penal colony of two centuries ago.

Switzerland Travel Guide

Combining expansive greenery, slick cities and bucketfuls of fresh air, Switzerland is a stylish tourist destination offering countless outdoor adventures and contemporary urban breaks.

Switzerland s Alpine vistas are so picture perfect, they can appear plucked from the pages of a storybook. But these disarming landscapes are alive and kicking, as a spot of skiing, hiking or mountain biking will attest. Ski resorts like Zermatt (home to the lofty Matterhorn), Verbier and celebrity-studded St Moritz provide everything from big, bad Olympic runs to encouragingly gentle novice slopes. And when the snow melts at low altitudes, the white-tipped mountain peaks remain against a backdrop of blue skies, providing a superb setting for summertime hiking.

The ancient capital Berne provides almost endless opportunities for sightseeing, shopping and traditional folk entertainment, while Zurich leads the way in art, design and nightlif ... Read more »

Sydney Accommodation

Get down to business

As an alpha world city and Australia s commercial hub, there s no shortage of places to do business in Sydney. Most of the city s business hotels are clustered around main thoroughfare George Street in the heart of the Central Business District, though there are plenty of high-quality hotels on the fringe of the city centre in Darling Harbour and Circular Quay as well.

Countless taxis are on hand to convey passengers to all corners of the city, however it can be just as efficient to hop on a City Circle train or ferry to get around town. All the major hotel chains are represented in the heart of the city including Sofitel, Sheraton and Sebel making Sydney an ideal destination for business travellers.

Switzerland may be small but we are blessed with diversity. Most think of mountain tops wrapped in eternal snow, but we've got a little of everything:

  • The Swiss Riviera with its palm lined avenues between Montreux and Geneva;
  • Italian "dolce vita" in the sunny Ticino with its Mediterranean climate;
  • Pristine alpine meadows full of wildflowers in the spring and bell-carrying four legged guests in the summer;
  • Delightful cities and medieval towns;
  • Numerous refreshing mineral baths and health resorts;
  • The Engadin with its special light that brings contrasts alive and attracts artists for centuries;
  • Remote valleys with picturesque villages where life hasn't changed much over decades;

Super Travels Pte Ltd? Super NOT FUN!

Perth, Australia

02 July 2012, 12:05

I want to warn everyone about a horrible experience I had with Super Travels Pte Ltd.

I have travelled many times with different tour agents in Singapore. It s usually a travel companion deal, 2 of you book into the tour together and share a hotel room etc. For all flight legs, I have always been on the same flight as my fellow tour members, or in the very least, with my travel companion.

But on a recent tour with Super Travels, I was put on a flight of my own. I don t even know why, neither flight was fully booked. And isn t it reasonable to assume that you will be on the same flight as your fellow tour members, or at least your travel companion, especially if as a group you have all been flying together during the tour and the tour leader leads you as a group through the airport to the gate?

What s worse, nobody from Super Travels even bothered to ... Read more »

Experience with redBus.in

I have been using redBus.in (external link) for sometime now and never had an opportunity to experience to interact with their customer service before. Recently I had a trip to Hyderabad and tickets were booked through redBus.in. Here is my experience.

I traveled from Chennai to Hyderabad and return. Onward journey was smooth except that the head phones given in the bus did not work well. But that s OK to compromise. Return trip was not pleasant.

Return trip was booked on SVR Travels (External website). The bus was delayed by about 40 minutes and when we called up the coach attendant, he was rude in answering. Just before the mid-night, it seems driver dashed vehicle with some other vehicle and glass window of one of the windows got damaged. Fault is from our driver himself. And suddenly AC in the bus stopped functioning and when we reported, driver was not willing to looked into and respnded with a rude tone. Whole nigh ... Read more »

You simply choose where you want to visit and then get on here for recommendations for hotels, restaurants, activities, etc. and then book your hotels! I don t know of a Swiss hotel that doesn t have a website and online reservation system. Do you have an itinerary in mind? What is the attraction of Switzerland for you? What do you like to do and see when you travel? Some folks love great hotels, great restaurants and others love museums, others architecture, others lots of history, some love the countryside, some the cities - that s the kind of information we would love to have in order to make good suggestions. While you can't do anything to prevent an unexpected storm from closing the airport, you can do something to help cover your travel investment, you can buy a travel insurance plan. Shatner, William

It s said that a highly visible role as James T. Kirk in the Star Trek franchise can be the kiss of death to a professional acting career, but it doesn t seem to have hurt William Shatner. The Canadian-born actor attended McGill University where he was active in theater productions on campus. During his summers through college, Shatner performed in the Royal Mount Theater Company. When he graduated in 1952 with a B.A. Shatner began work at the National Repertory Theater of Ottawa. He eventually won co-starring roles in plays such as "The Merchant of Venice" and "Henry V," as well as the Most Promising Actor award. After a run in New York in the play, 'Tamburlaine," Shatner was signed to a seven-year contract by 20th Century Fox. He married a Canadian actress, Gloria Rand, and honeymooned in Scotland. It was something of a working honeymoon, however, as Shatner had a role in an Edinburgh Festival production of "Henry V."

Spain: Tips for Planning Travel to Spain

Share your knowledge

Tips for Planning Travel to Spain

These tips are for first time travelers to Spain. Many seem obvious, but one is always surprised at questions new travelers ask in the Trip Advisor forums. One has to do some homework if one's trip will be one of pleasure and have less stress.

1. Buy a book about travel to Spain. Read it and decide what parts of Spain interest you and which cities you want to visit.

2. Get an idea of the geography of Spain. This is a good article from Wikipedia:

Be aware that Spain is the second largest country in Western Europe (after France) and one of the most mountainous (after Switzerland). The central meseta is a highland plateau and Madrid is on this meseta. Be aware of distances between cities. Google Maps or the Via Michelin website can tell you what these distances are.

3. The best time to travel in Spain is spring and fall ... Read more »
