Vancouver Travel Tips

Dan Breckwoldt /Shutterstock

Keep in Mind.

  • Bring comfy shoes Central Vancouver is ideal for walking. Forget the car and get to know this outdoorsy city on foot.
  • Use an ATM The U.S. and Canadian dollars are roughly equivalent to one another, but money changers do charge a fee for exchanges. You can avoid that fee by simply withdrawing from an ATM instead.
  • Keep an eye on your stuff Although Vancouver is relatively safe, crimes of opportunity do take place. Make sure to keep a close watch on your valuables.

Even by North American standards, Vancouver is a young city. But what it lack ... Read more »

Vienna, Austria

As an Australian living and working in Europe, I find it incredible how often I m confused as being an Austrian. I was in Minnesota for work last year and someone congratulated me on my flawless English! I’ve also been asked multiple times what the official language is in Australia, presumably mistaking it for the EU member state. There are no kangaroos in Austria people, nor any alps in Australia. Look at a map!  I hadn’t thought of it from the other perspective however, but my Austrian friend who lives in Vienna (and happens to love surfing) says he’s constantly mistaken for an Australian during his international travels!

Read the sign people

Following a 3 day work trip for my wife in Nettingsdorf (in western Austria) we took the opportunity for a quick weekend break in the capital, Wien (Vienna). Previously we’d only been through Vienna’s airport on the way home to Australia, so while I could comment on the quality of it’s airp ... Read more »

Amazing Deals On Vietnam Hotels

Destination Guide

While living in Vietnam I found there frequently wasn't much information or decent photos of places to visit off the beaten track available on the internet - it may be easy to find information on towns on the Sinh Cafe routes but beyond that places were often something of a mystery.

It also seemed that many of the guides I came across didn't express the sheer beauty of the country, with dry descriptions and little information beyond where to sleep. I want to try and correct that with this blog and travel guide - althoug ... Read more »

Vietnam: Adventure Travel in Vietnam

It seems that every article you read about Vietnam is saying the same thing - now is the time to do it. Believe them, they know what they are talking about these journalists - the entire country is buzzing with optimism and if you want to experience the pleasure of travelling through a country whilst it is at its peak, then your search is over.

Many visitors are overwhelmed by the sublime beauty of the country's natural setting; the stunning hills, mountains and valleys to be explored in the north; the Mekong Delta in the south and the many hundreds of miles of deserted beaches that lie in-between. The majority of adventure tour itineraries allow you to travel the length of the country ensuring you get to enjoy all the amazing beaches, the patchwork of rice paddies to be seen mile after mile in all directions, and to enjoy the abundance of fresh seafood that plays such an important part in the popularity of Vie ... By Plane

In Vietnam, there are four international airports in total. If you want a direct flight, e. g. from the U.S. or Europe to Vietnam, you can either fly to HCMC (with the biggest airport, the Tan Son Nhat International Airport) or to Hanoi (with the second biggest one, the Nội Bài International Airport).

Alternatively, you can take a flight to China, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, South Korea, Japan or Singapore, and get a connecting flight to Vietnam:

Da Nang has an International Airport (flights from/to Seoul/South Korea, Bangkok/Thailand, Singapore).

Can Tho Airport in South Vietnam provides international service, too (flights from/to Bangkok/Thailand, Tokyo/Japan, Phnom Penh/Cambodia).

Phu Quoc Island now has its own International Airport.

Volunteering at The Panda Centers in China

Few things are as delightful as observing the wonders of the Giant Panda first hand.  Even though Pandas International is located in Littleton, Colorado (a suburb of Denver) and not in China, we CAN offer experience-based advice on volunteering opportunities with the pandas for the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Pandas (CCRCGP).  The Bifengxia Panda Center is currently NOT accepting visitors and due to the 2008 Earthquake, the Wolong center is closed to volunteers until construction of the new center is completed and the volunteer program is reinstated.  The Bifengxia Panda Center is still open to the public to see the Pandas and the Dujiangyan Panda Center is open for Volunteering.

Depending on the time of year and the tour you select, volunteer service will cost approximately $100 per day (700RMB).  In order to volunteer,  you should be in generally good ... Read more »

About

Rejuvenate and experience a new part of the world

From weekend trips to lengthy overseas sojourns, there's no excuse not to get away every once in a while to rejuvenate and experience a new part of the world. However, you don't always need to travel to far-flung destinations to experience the holiday buzz and often the best holiday memories are made right here at home in Asia. Hong Kong is surrounded by countries that can be reached by short haul flight but feel worlds away when it comes to landscapes, culture and cuisine. Consider spending time in the lush green hills of Sri Lanka, or snorkelling in the abundant waters of the Seychelles or Maldives. If you are a history buff nothing can beat exploring the Great Wall of China or walking through the ground of Topkapi Palace in Istanbul. If you prefer to get off the beaten track check out the rock hewn churches of Ethiopia or safari in Kenya.

Cooperative weather, flights aid so-far smooth post-Thanksgiving travel efforts

ноя 30, 2015

By JAKE PEARSON, Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — Tens of millions of Americans returning home after the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend Sunday had cooperative weather and mostly efficient airport operations to thank for smooth traveling conditions.

Other than a winter storm that is bringing freezing rain and snow to the central Plains Sunday night and into Monday, and flood warnings in northern Texas and Arkansas, weather across much of the country is seasonably mild, said National Weather Service meteorologist Bruce Sullivan.

Enjoy it while it lasts, he said.

Getting the cheapest flights

Add this article to your reading list by clicking this button

LAST AUGUST, Gulliver told you about the "eight-week rule" for buying airline tickets. According to Makoto Watanabe, the cheapest time to book your flight, all else being equal, is about eight weeks before you plan to leave. It's a good one-step rule. But what else should you take into account when trying to get a great deal on an expensive flight? The Wall Street Journal 's Scott McCartney has some suggestions. Bottom line: if you buy your tickets midweek (i.e. Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday), you can save a bundle. One expert, FareCompare.com's Rick Seaney, has even pinpointed an ideal time to buy: 3pm EST on Tuesday. So why do ... Read more »

In the beginning, there were airline sites. Then there were online travel agencies, such as Expedia, Hotwire, Orbitz, Priceline and Travelocity. And then about 10 years ago came the travel metasearch sites, sometimes called search sites or aggregators.

All three shopping models still exist and new players are entering the U.S. market, such as U.K.-based Skyscanner. But as online shopping becomes more complex, metasearch may be more important than ever. That's why we examined seven leading sites — and compared them head-to-head on their airfare products.

    Travel Planning

Travel planning can help or hurt you, depending how far you take it. The best way to break travel plans is to make them in the first place!  This is true, because you will most likely meet people along the way or see things that make you want to change your itinerary entirely.

Try not to make the mistake of setting a strict timeline; instead, focus on a loose plan to help you get the most out of your trip. It is worth researching things like festivals, weather, and visa requirements so that you will have some idea of what to expect.

Extreme flexibility beats extreme preparation any day!

    Where to Start Travel Planning?

The only two things that you have to know for sure to begin your trip: what country you want to start with and when you want to go. Everything else done for travel planning is simply a bonus.

When choosing your destinations, keep these things in mind:

wiseGEEK: What is a Travel Voucher?

A travel voucher is a form used by business travelers to keep track of their travel expenses. At the end of the trip or another convenient interval, the traveler turns in the voucher to a representative of the employer. This allows the employer to compensate the traveler for any out-of-pocket expenses. Another kind of travel voucher is provided by travel companies when a pre-purchased trip is not available, such as a canceled airline flight. The traveler can redeem the voucher for another trip at a later time.

Aside from tourism, business is one of the most common reasons for people to travel. Unless they are directly involved in the transportation field, most companies will not make travel arrangements for employees. Instead, they allow the employee to take care of the details of the journey. Once the trip is done, the employee will turn in a travel voucher with an itemized list of all expenses. It is in their interests that you understand what you are getting in to so they will walk you through what you need. You will need to post an insurance bond so you will need a business plan to given them some idea of projected turnover.

1a) Once you have your licence you can start approaching airlines to get authority to issue their tickets. You can t just issue tickets on any airline because you have an IATA licence.

1b) At the same time you might want to negotiate with the airline about what access they will provide you to consolidator fares. In fact you might want to have that in your back pocket before you apply for the IATA licence otherwise your ... Read more »

What International Air Travel Was Like in the 1930s

Today we largely take international air travel for granted. Every major city in the world is little more than a hop, skip, and jump away. At the dawn of commercial air travel, Imperial Airways was Britain's shuttle to the world. As the British Empire's lone international airline in the 1920s and '30s, ... Read more »

It's wise to study the weather information below, as an ill-timed trip can mean pouring rain, debilitating humidity, or seas too rough for diving or beach activity. The high season for tourism throughout the kingdom is the North American/European winter period, mid-October through late February. Prices skyrocket and hotels fill up then, so be sure to make advance reservations. Off-season weather, however, is not intolerable, and some travelers report joyfully trading the crowded beaches and high prices of high season for a bit of off-peak discomfort. Low season is generally composed of the odd rainy afternoon, significant savings, and a lot more elbowroom. Because this coincides with school holidays in the U.S. and Europe, there is a mini high season in July/August when families head for the kingdom.

So you're planning your Morocco travel! As they say in Arabic, Mabruk! (Congratulations). Now what? Well, before you get on the plane, there are some things you probably want to know.

Morocco, Morrocco, Morroco? Which is correct?

In English, we spell the word: Morocco. But in Arabic, there are no vowels, so it's really anybody's guess. If you can pronounce it, that's more important than if you can spell it correctly.

Do I need any vaccinations before I go?

While this is always a personal choice, the answer about mandatory vaccines in Morocco is NO. For many people, they prefer to err on the side of safety (and the CDC recommendations), and get inoculated against such fun things as rabies and hepatitis (A & B both!) ... Read more »

    When to Go

Just about everyone agrees that the best time to visit is Greece is spring and early summer (mid-Apr to mid-June) or autumn (Sept to mid-Oct). This way, you'll avoid the summer high season, with its inflated prices, hordes of tourists and high temperatures (heat waves of 100 F/+40C are routine). In fact, unless you really like scorching heat, crowds, and overbooked planes, ferry boats, and hotels, August is to be avoided. In the spring, you'll see more wildflowers than you could have imagined -- and swim in a colder sea than you had hoped for! In the autumn, you will enjoy golden days with a still-warm seas to swim in. One drawback: Off-season there are fewer boats and flights to the islands, where some shops, hotels, and restaurants do not open until June and then close in October. When it is winter in the Northern Hemisphere, Australia is basking in the Southern Hemisphere s summer, and vice versa. When to Go

The seasons in Argentina are the reverse of those in the Northern Hemisphere. Buenos Aires is ideal in fall (Mar-May) and spring (Sept-Nov), when temperatures are mild. The beaches and resort towns are packed with vacationing Argentines in summer (Dec-Mar), while Buenos Aires becomes somewhat deserted of locals, which is not a bad thing regarding traffic. Plan a trip to Patagonia and the southern Andes in summer, when days are longer and warmer. Winter (June-Aug) is the best time to visit Iguazú and the Northwest, when the rains and heat have subsided; but spring (Aug-Oct) is also pleasant, as temperatures are mild and the crowds have cleared out.

Climate -- Except for a small tropical area in northern Argentina, the country lies in the Temperate Zone, characterized by cool, dry weather in the south and warmer, humid air in the center. Accordingly, January and February are quite hot -- often in the high 90s to more than 100°F ( ... Read more »

Getting from point A to B in space usually requires considerable quantities of propellant. But after it blasted off from Earth, the Genesis probe was able to travel 1.5 million kilometers. More.

Contrary to everyday experience on Earth, the most efficient route through space may not be a straight line. Some mathematicians and NASA engineers have learned in recent years that take best advantage of gravity, and save fuel in the process, it may be necessary to make bizarre loops through space.

Take for example the Genesis spacecraft. In 2004, it started on its way home after having spent two years collecting solar particles in orbit around a Lagrange point. a point between Earth and the Sun where the gravity of both bodies is balanced.

But Genesis did not come straight home. It took a long curvy path, going past the Earth to make an extended million-mile loop (around another Lagrange point) before coming back to Earth. Amaz ... Read more »

Finding the best place to buy plane tickets online can be influenced by a variety of factors. When a person plans to travel, where he plans to travel, and what airline he would like to use can all influence ticket price. It's often best to start by looking at the airline's websites, but many online travel sites and discount clubs can offer good deals, especially for people who buy ahead or who are flexible with their travel plans.

In general, people should first start by looking at the websites of the individual airlines that fly to a particular destination. Travelers who are making late arrangements and plan to travel within a week of purchasing the tickets may find that an airline may offer special deals for people who are buying plane tickets online. When to Go

A visit to Ireland in the summer is very different from a trip in the winter. Apart from climatic considerations, there are the issues of cost, closures, and crowds. Generally speaking, in summer, airfares, car-rental rates, and hotel prices are highest and crowds at their most intense. But the days are long (6am sunrises and 10pm sunsets), the weather is warm, and every sightseeing attraction and B B is open. In winter, you can get rock-bottom prices on airfare and hotels. But it will rain and the wind will blow, and many rural sights and a fair proportion of the rural B Bs and restaurants will be closed.

All things considered, we think the best time to visit is in spring and fall, when weather falls in between bad and good, but you get lower-than-high-season prices and the crowds have yet to descend.

When to Use a Travel Agent

    By Ann Rivall | July 17, 2014

It's an assumption you've heard before: Travel agents are a dying breed. Many people presume that the rise of do-it-yourself booking engines like Travelocity.com and Expedia.com all but wiped out travel agencies Yahoo recently declared a career as a travel agent a "dead-end job." But that's not necessarily the case. Travel agents still have their place: In fact, members of the American Society of Travel Agents book more than 144 million vacations a year, and ASTA reported more than $17 billion in revenue for 2012.

In an attempt to change consumers' views, John Pittman, a vice president at ASTA, said the society prefers to use the term "travel professional." This term describes the profession more broadly as today's booking agents ... Read more »

    Worldwide Travel Alert

    Last Updated: November 23, 2015

The State Department alerts U.S. citizens to possible risks of travel due to increased terrorist threats. Current information suggests that ISIL (aka Da’esh), al-Qa’ida, Boko Haram, and other terrorist groups continue to plan terrorist attacks in multiple regions. These attacks may employ a wide variety of tactics, using conventional and non-conventional weapons and targeting both official and private interests. This Travel Alert expires on February 24, 2016.

Let's start with our credo: We believe that travelers are the best source of travel information.

That is why we have setup World66, an open content travel guide, where people from all over the planet can write about the places they love, the hotels they stayed in, the restaurants that have eaten.

Every part of the travel guide can be edited directly, just click the [edit] button and go ahead. You can change the info you find, do a write up, add a complete city or just a bar or a restaurant.

Does this work? We think it does. Thanks to this approach World66.com has become one of the most complete travel resources on the internet, with 149,869 articles on 79 ... Read more »

Why You Still Need a Travel Agent

A few years ago, a good friend took an international trip with a two-stop flight itinerary. Afterwards, he reflected on how beat up he felt when it was over: "Adding that third airport into the mix seemed to add a ton of extra travel this year; it was rough."

I asked how he booked the flights. He said that he'd used one of the big travel booking sites, and that the itinerary he purchased was the best combination of duration, flight times and price he could find. My response: "Next time, call my travel agent first. You'll feel a lot better when it's all over."

The following year, he did just that, and the agent came up with options that he could never have found himself using a single booking site -- specifically, a short and affordable Southwest flight that put him in an a ... Read more »

There’s a reason we use the term advisor to describe the members of our annual A-List. the top travel specialists in the business. These experts offer much more than booking services. First and foremost, says Wendy Perrin, TripAdvisor’s Travel Advocate and founder of WendyPerrin.com. they can help you decide where to go by walking you through the pros and cons of destinations based on the varying interests (and ages) of the people in your group. Not only that, they’ll deliver insider insights and access. They can tell you how to avoid the crowds at major sights and where the locals eat. They can even pair you with designers and architects who moonlight as walking-tour guides, get a local artist to open his studio to you, and direct you to hidden corners of a city. Why Travel Agents and Telephones Still Rule Cruise Booking

If you thought social travel and trip-planning were hard, just consider online cruise booking, where travel agents and the phone are still the predominant tools.

    Dennis Schaal

There s a reason that Carnival Corp. and Norwegian Cruise Line  each state that travel agents still handle a majority of their bookings: Cruise booking can sometimes be so complex it makes wedding planning seem to be a mere walk around the promenade deck.

The existence of dozens of cruise lines, with several hundred ships in their motley fleets, is only the starting point. A ship like Oasis of the Seas has some 25 choices of cabin types, for example.

Then industrywide there are over a thousand ports to choose from, hundreds of onboard activities, thousands of shore excursions, scores of convoluted deck plans, and a mind-numbing number of restaurants and dining seatings to consider. ... Read more »

5 Reasons why you should travel the world

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one s lifetime.”

    Why Travel The World

We all have that one friend on Facebook that occasionally pops up offering up an opportunity for us to live vicariously through their experiences. They post up photos of sunsets in highly desirable locations on the other side of the world and at first it amuses, then promotes wanderlust, we have a little daydream about our next vacation and then the jealousy sinks in. Although, I just made that generalisation up so if that resonates with you in any way then you ve come to the right blog post.

It might be too soon to rave about Kris at World Travel, but holy cow! Consider this a rave!  I contacted Kris early in our planning process with a rough sketch of what we were looking for and she got back to me in a flash.  Rather than write us off after we changed our minds twice about our travel plans, she listened to us and let us know the minute an airfare sale appeared so we could take advantage of a great, great price that allowed us to upgrade seats. She helped us figure out a route that offered good times, easy transfers, flexibility and enough structure to give us a jump start our planning.

    About Dormant Bank Accounts

Banking experts estimate that up to 5bn may be sitting unclaimed in UK bank accounts that have gone 'dormant'. What does this mean, and could you be entitled to a share in this huge amount of idle money?

A bank account goes dormant when, in the words of the British Bankers' Association, a bank and a customer 'lose touch with each other'. What this usually means in practice is that a customer has either passed away or moved house, and the bank haven't been told and are unable to locate the account holder some time later.

If there are no transactions on an account over a period of around 12 months, the bank will write to the account holder at the last known address to ask them if they wish to keep the account open.
