# The freedom of travel
By admin 17 June 2011 5:31pm Europe/London
Freedom is almost synonymous with movement: fast cars, migrating birds, wind if it moves, it s a metaphor for freedom. And so it goes that travel is also associated with freedom and its partner-in-crime, escape. But escape from what?
Travel is an escape from the everyday. The everyday is that which I no longer see, feel, interrogate. Things in my daily life become so common to me that they disappear. The colour of my desk at work I cannot recall, the smell of my shampoo I do not notice, etc. Everything familiar becomes hidden to me. I become numb to the world around me, just as prisoners become numbed by the walls of their cells. My routines are the walls of my cell. To alleviate this daze I purchase new clothes, books, seek out new cafes, take on new hobbies, but these too are quickly absorbed by the everyday.
So how do we get outside of the everyday?

# About the List
Anyone who has spent a significant time abroad knows that Canadians are avid travellers. Something about our nature spurs us to explore other countries. We re also overrepresented in many overseas expat communities especially those of English teachers in Asia and make up a disproportionately large chunk of the travel blogging community.
Few Canadians know just how many Canucks are out there exploring the globe and writing about it from a Canadian perspective. To highlight the travels of our wanderlusting countrymen and women, we compiled this list of the Top 100 Canadian Travel Blogs .
In compiling the list, we first asked thousands of travel bloggers to nominate their Canadian friends. Then, our editor, veteran travel blogger Matt Gibson, hand-picked the best 100 Canadian travel blogs from the lot. We feel that ranking the blogs would be arbitrary because both the tastes of readers and the contents of blogs v

# The World's Top 10 Most Innovative Companies In Travel
These companies are changing the industry as we know it.
For making the most of its hosts. By this summer, Airbnb will usurp the InterContinental Hotels Group and Hilton Worldwide as the world's largest hotel chain—without owning a single hotel. The startup, which allows users to rent out their spare rooms or vacant homes to strangers, surpassed 10 million stays on its platform last year, doubled its listings to 550,000 (in 192 countries), and, according to a source familiar with the company's business, tripled revenue to an estimated $250 million. Befitting its growing might, last fall CEO Brian Chesky poached boutique-hotel pioneer Chip Conley to be its head of global hospitality. Already, Conley has created a baseline

If you’ve heard the rumors about Amazon’s new travel site. you’re not alone. Buzz is big surrounding the e-commerce company’s aggressive appeals to hotels across the nation. But Amazon’s plan isn’t to compete with TripAdvisor or Expedia. Instead, the changes are a part of a massive build-out of the burgeoning Amazon Local .
Whispers about Amazon Travel arose when the group began to more forcefully approach hotels for exclusive offers and partnerships. While this is true, the end-goal is not an Amazon-powered hotel booking site.
“We’re not launching a travel site ,” said representative Tom Cook. ”All the work that’s being done [is with] Amazon Local. We’re continuing to curate…great hotel deals and pricing.”
You’re not alone if you’re unfamiliar with Amazon Local. The marketplace has been quietly building its arsenal of services and Groupon-like deals for those interested in tapping into their neighborhood ma

# Tips From the Banker: The Real Cost of Travel in Thailand
I spent two months traveling in Thailand, making it my longest-traveled country on my Southeast Asian itinerary. During my three weeks in Laos and month in Cambodia. I found it possible to travel on an average of just USD$30 per day. Once I got to Thailand, however, keeping costs low became difficult. For some reason, I started spending Baht like it was monopoly money, especially in the islands.
I had heard previously, and can now confirm, that the north of Thailand is easy on a tight budget. As one moves south, costs for accommodation start to double, triple, and even quadruple. Pricey accommodation accounted for my biggest expenditure, and drinks came in at a close second.
However, when I considered my overall expenditure, I realized that the costs were still very reasonable, especially considering that I was in Thailand during high season, including Christmas and New Years.

# Tibet Travel Permit
Last updated: November,18 2015
Contrary to popular belief, a tangible Tibet Travel Permit aka Tibet Tourism Bureau (T.T.B.) permit does exist and there are no plans of eliminating this permit in the near future. A permit is required to enter Tibet. The TTB costs vary depending on your departure city, and there is no expiration date for the permit. You do not need a permit to leave Tibet, however you will need an additional transit permit to enter certain cities within Tibet as well as Mt. Everest Base camp (60 Yuan per person, 405 Yuan per vehicle), which can be easily arranged by your tour operator. You do need a China Visa as well as a passport that is valid for at least 6 months before applying for the TTB.
Chinatibettrain is cooperating with Tibet Travel Org CITS. the top local tour operator, to help travelers obtain Tibet travel permit. The agency also offers EXTRA VALUE tour packages. T

And while many American families have hit the road for a winter holiday, whether it be to the warm south for a reprieve from the cold and snow, spending a week at a ski resort, or even visiting Vancouver for the Olympics, well-laid plans are being fulfilled for those who planned ahead. # The Top Online Travel Booking Sites for January 2014
2014 will be an interesting year to watch from traffic perspective. While Priceline Group has a huge lead, Expedia and Tripadvisor family will continue to duke it out.
Rafat Ali
Editor s Note: Late last year we started a once-a-quarter feature on top trafficked sites in various sectors in travel, using monthly data from SimilarWeb . We have found SimilarWeb’s traffic stats to be a relatively good barometer of web activity and much more accurate than other traffic comparison sites at least as far as proportional comparison goes.
We re starting 2014 by looking at the top online booking sites in travel. Keep in mind this does not account for direct sites of travel brands (airlines/hotels) themselves, which we have done in separate lists previously. Also, our threshold is roughly 5 million visits per month, and does not count any app activity, hence sites

# The Ugly Truth About Airline Prices
With fares skyrocketing, you need to stop following the old rules of travel to book an affordable ticket.
Share Tweet Email
If you heard recently that the best day to buy airline tickets is a Sunday, close to 57 days before the flight, you were misinformed. That tidbit came from an Airlines Reporting Corporation (ARC) study based on data from hundreds of millions of round-trip ticket purchases between January 2013 and July 2014.
What followed in the media was a series of doubtful interpretations masking an ugly truth: it keeps getting more expensive to fly, no matter when you purchase your ticket.
Notably, the statistics show the daily average price of tickets bought (Domestic: Sunday, $432; Monday, $503; Tuesday, $497; Wednesday, $498; Thursday, $501; Friday, $502; Saturday), and the changes in price over the 300 days preceding flight departure. The ACR press release undersc

Crossing the Pacific is simply daunting. Anyone who has flown to Hawaii knows the pain of that long flight, particularly those flying from eastern parts of the United States. Now, take that flight and double it -- Hawaii is only roughly halfway to Asia!
With cheap food and accommodation, Asia is a great budget destination; however, one dilemma exists: getting on the ground in the first place! Unfortunately, cheap flights to Asia can be difficult to find; the ticket price proves to be a barrier for many Americans who would otherwise love to visit Asia.

Note Updated: Mount Everest (Tibet side) is reopened from July 1, 2015!

You should make sure you secure an Entry Permit, especially if new restrictions are brought in, before you apply for a visa and make the final preparations for your trip, unless you are willing to consider alternatives to Tibet once you arrive in China.

# Using Anti Snoring Mouthpiece
The good news is that for most people, snoring is caused by a blocked passageway. Instead of a smooth breathing process, the air has trouble getting in and out of the throat, therefore causing the sound. Blockage can happen because the tongue is in the way or the throat muscles are weak and preventing proper airflow.
If the problem is due to these two reasons, the use of an anti snoring mouthpiece is the best possible solution. The mouthpiece is worn during sleeping and positions the problematic body part properly so that it doesn’t block the air from passing in and out of the mouth.
Today, there are two types of mouthpieces used for snoring.
* Tongue Retaining – tongue retaining mouthpieces are small and placed only at the tip of the tongue. This pulls the tongue slightly forward, therefore preventing it from flopping around in the mouth, causing snoring. Comfortable and easy to use, tongue retaining mouth

Suzanne Barbezat is a travel writer based in Oaxaca, Mexico. She has traveled extensively throughout Mexico and has produced the About.com Mexico Travel site since 2006.
Mexico s two major airlines, Mexicana de Aviacion and Aeromexico were publicly owned and dominated the Mexican air travel market for many years. Fares were exorbitant, so the majority of Mexicans and tourists traveled by bus. Since the privatization of these airlines, several Mexican discount airlines have entered the scene, creating competition and bringing airfares down.
In the past budget travelers didn t even consider traveling by air within Mexico, and they spent many long hours on buses.

There's perhaps only one thing better than travelling to a place for the first time - going there for a second round.
Lonely Planet has a bucketload of advice for first-timers (in our guidebooks. mobile apps and on lonelyplanet.com ) but one of the best spots for know-how is our favourite and most vocal resource: other travellers on the Thorn Tree forum .
They've got advice on what to do if it's your first time in Japan or Cuba or Scandinavia or Chester or [insert destination here]. But some advice is consistent, no matter which country you’re travelling to. Here are some of the lessons they've learned the hard way (so you don't have to).
The number one reminder for first-timers on Thorn Tree is - don’t try and cram in too much. No really.
It’s natural to want to make the most of a first visit – there’s always that little voice war
