(Photo: Old Europe image by Nikituk from Fotolia.com ) Related ArticlesThere are many misconceptions when it comes to packing for travel, especially when you re going to Europe. Take heart, however: Unless you ll be doing specialized activities in Europe, there s no need to replace your wardrobe or buy travel clothing that you ll never use at home. ClimateThe climate and geography of Europe varies widely. Northern maritime countries like England and Ireland are mild, cool and damp throughout winter, while southern Mediterranean countries like Spain and Greece are often much warmer and drier. Do research before you pack, however. Even northern countries like Russia can be boiling hot in summer, for example. Pack primarily for the season you will be traveling, but don t forget a sweater or jacket even in summer, or a lighter top and pants for winter in case the climate surprises you. StyleWhile style and level of formality varies by country, it is usually a good idea to dress fairly conservatively. Shorts are not worn in most European countries, and most churches, cathedrals and other places of worship will deny entry to tourists wearing shorts or tank tops. It s best to wear a knee-length skirt and keep a scarf to cover your shoulders with if you re a woman traveling in hot weather, but still want to enter churches. Both men and women can get away with tailored jeans and dressy sneakers or sandals in summer, or trousers and boots with a dressy coat in winter. Neutrals like black are always in fashion.
