Traveling From The U.S.

Having the correct documentation in place before your trip is essential to travel outside the United States. Below are the Passport Visa requirements that will help make your trip run smoothly.

Passport

A passport is required for ALL international travel. If you're traveling anywhere overseas, even to Canada, the Caribbean or Mexico, you need a passport to board an international flight and to enter any country. In general, your passport must be valid for at least six months after the date you enter a foreign country.

Visit the U. S. State Department's website opens in a new window if you need a new passport or your passport is about to expire. There, you can find information on obtaining first time passports, passport renewals, second passport issuance and extra blank pages for an existing passport. You can also visit the U. S. Postal Service opens in a new window to find the closest Post Office that can also provide new and renewal passport services.

Visa

A travel visa is required to enter many countries. To see if one is required for your upcoming trip, visit the U. S. State Department travel website opens in a new window .

Re-entering the U.S.

Check the travel documents you will need to re-enter the U.S. For example, if you are traveling to the U.S. from Canada, select United States in the Destination country box. This search engine and database are provided and managed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). You may wish to double-check foreign entry requirements by contacting your local embassy or consulate.

Traveling to a U.S. Territory

If you are a U. S. citizen and want to travel to one of its territories, you will not need a U. S. Passport. Sufficient ID would be a U. S. driver's license or other valid photo identification, the same as if you were flying to New York or Seattle. However, U.S. residents with foreign passports would be subject to the same entry procedures in one of the territories that they would be on the mainland.

These destinations are considered U. S. territories: Puerto Rico, Guam, Saipan and the U. S. Virgin Islands.
