Plane Ticket Loan Program

What is the program?

The SU Abroad Plane Loan Ticket Program allows Syracuse University students who are fully funded with need-based financial aid to apply their financial aid funds toward the purchase of their plane ticket abroad. Visiting, international, graduate, and non-aided students do not qualify.

Students must be anticipating a refund on their Bursar account after all SU costs have been paid to participate in this program. If a student will have a credit on their Bursar account in excess of the estimated purchase price of the plane ticket, they may book their ticket through SU Abroad s travel agency, Advantage Travel, and the cost will be deducted from their financial aid funds (prior approval must be given before a student reserves a ticket through Advantage Travel).

How does it work?

For qualifying students, the University provides a loan against anticipated financial aid refund to purchase a ticket. SU Abroad will guarantee payment to the travel agency, which will be repaid by the credit on the student's Bursar account.

How do I qualify?

Students must receive full financial need-based aid (combination of grants, scholarships, and student loans) to cover the cost of their tuition, program fee, and plane ticket. Approval from the SU Abroad and Financial Aid Office is required also.

How do I apply?

Students enrolled in the HEOP, SSSP, and CO-Gen programs are eligible for the program, but should complete the application to indicate their interest in participating. Other students funded close to cost of attendance can also apply to the Plane Ticket Loan Program by completing an application.

Important notes

  • The Plane Ticket Loan Program is not a grant; it is a loan and participants will use financial aid funds they have already been awarded to repay the loan for their plane ticket.
  • To participate in the Plane Ticket Loan Program, students must book their ticket through Advantage Travel (or GT Tours for Chile students).
  • If a student elects to participate in the Plane Ticket Loan Program and later withdraws, his/her Bursar account will be charged for the cost of the plane ticket.
  • Students must sign a promissory note to participate. This will be sent to qualifying students via email.
