    #Documents Needed for Travel

Bringing the proper identification to the airport will help with an efficient identity screening and check-in process.

In addition, the name on your identification must match the name on your airline reservation or boarding pass. Small differences such as the use of a middle initial instead of a full middle name or no middle name at all, or hyphens and apostrophes, should not cause significant issues.

    Required Documents for Domestic Travel

According to the Identity Screening Regulations, the required identification to take a domestic flight is:

    • one piece of valid government-issued photo identification that shows the holder's name, date of birth and gender;
    • two pieces of valid government-issued identification, at least one of which shows the holder's name, date of birth and gender; or

#Do NOT book flight directly on: Air Travel Forum

    Chicago, IL 6 forum posts

    #32 of 112

I booked a flight through Kayak for Travelocity, and I regret it. It was impulsive, and now I feel uneasy about my reservation. Travelocity.com does not recognize the TripID given by Kayak (although you can find the booking on My Trip on Kayak) and the airline initially did not recognize the reservation either.

After I called Kayak/Travelocity customer service line, which is clearly outsourced overseas and entailed about a 15 minute wait, I engaged in goofy debate with someone reading from a script. I finally managed to convince them to stop reading the script and focus on my question. He did a little digging and he agreed with me that the Travelocity Trip ID and airline record locator were not working. About 15 minutes later, the customer rep hung in there with me and determined that it was because when the airline asked for first name to locate the reservation, the recor ... Read more »

    #Europe’s Book Travelers

If nobody had read to me the ‘Aesop’s Fables’ and the ‘Arabian Nights’, even before I went to school, I wouldn’t have expected a world full of danger and opportunity. If later, when I was 8 or 9, I hadn’t read ‘The Little Prince’, I wouldn’t have learnt that I could be friends with a fox. And then, without ‘Gulliver’s Travels’, ‘Ivanhoe’, ‘A Christmas Carol’, ‘Through the Looking Glass’, ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Adventures of Tom Sawyer’, I fear that my imagination, as a contemporary city child, would have remained stagnant and poor.

And then, I wouldn’t have the urge to read the ancient Greeks, Dante, Boccaccio, Balzac, Camus, Cervantes, Dostoevsky, Flaubert, Kafka, Marquez, Proust, Melville, Orwell, even Marx and Keynes and so many more.

The books that I have read have shaped me and made me the person I am today. They taught me about freedom and democracy, friendship and love, war and peace and made me curious and studious.

    #Egypt travel advice.

    Visas

British passport holders travelling to Egypt normally require a visa.

For visits of up to 30 days, you can get a visa on arrival by payment in Sterling, US Dollars or Euros; the visa fee is US$25 at approved bank kiosks within airport arrival halls, before reaching immigration counters. There’s no need to buy a visa from an agent. In many cases agents will charge more than US$25 for a visa. If you’re harassed by an agent, report the incident to the tourist police in the airport terminal.

Alternatively you can get a visa from an Egyptian Consulate outside Egypt before you travel. If you’re entering Egypt for work or business it is preferable to get a visa before you travel.

British nationals travelling to Sharm el Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba and Taba resorts for up to 15 days receive a free entry permission stamp upon arrival. If you intend to travel out of these areas or stay longer than 15 days, you must get a visa.

Queues build at Greek ATMs Photo: REUTERS/Stefanos Rapanis

Over the weekend, the Foreign Office updated its advice for people travelling to Greece. In short: bring lots of extra cash.

With the country in the throes of an escalating debt crisis, tourists are right to be worried - but with a little preparation, your holiday should be fine. But what else should you look out for?

The money issue is obviously the big one, and the threat that Greece might default on its debts and leave the Euro is increasingly real.

#Expedia acquired Travelocity. Here is how it will affect you. The Washington Post

#Finding the cheapest train tickets - Cheap Fares.

Tips on finding cheap train tickets

There are many great deals on train fares around, and you can track down cheap train tickets and low-cost fares by following some simple methods.

    Getting the best deals

Cheap train fares are quota controlled by train operators, meaning that on long distance train journeys or intercity travel there will often be many different levels of cheap train fares or discounted train fares available.

These cheap fares are usually released by train operators around 12 weeks in advance of the journey, and are then managed on a regular basis by the company to control demand. This can sometimes mean increasing the quotas on trains or reducing them, which can make ticket prices rise.

If you know your travel dates, it's a good idea to start searching for travel tickets as soon as you can, to see what's available. If you can commit to a date early for your journey, you're ... Read more »

    #USA Travel Tips

When you visit the United States of America from another country, you should be aware of some differences.  We still use the old British system of measurement, (the system that the British no longer use).  Everything is measured in inches and feet, miles, gallons and pounds rather than the metric units.  Our electricity is normally 110 volts at 60 cycles rather than the worldwide standard of 220 volts at 50 cycles.  Our television and video recording standard is NTSC rather than the more common PAL standard used in other countries.  Here, we provide you with some travel tips on how to cope with these differences including a size conversion table for clothing.

When driving an auto in the USA, you should bear in mind that each of the 50 states has its own set of laws and regulations concerning driving.  The regulations are all very similar, but there are some subtle differences that you should know.  We provide some useful tips.

    #Find Cheap Worldwide Travel Insurance

Find the best travel insurance quote for your trip

Getting the right type of policy

Travel insurance is a must when heading overseas, but holiday insurance comes in all kinds of shapes and sizes, so it's important to make sure that you buy a policy that fits your needs exactly.

If you are going on holiday and buying a single trip travel insurance policy, it's easy to assume that worldwide travel is covered, but this isn't always the case.

Checking if you are covered for worldwide travel

Some travel insurance policies only cover the UK and European destinations. This will be useless if you twist your ankle on the Great Wall of China or you are bitten by a sand fly in the Amazon. So, while it may sound obvious, it's important to check that your policy covers your destination by reading through the terms and conditions before committing to a purchase.

    What's split ticketing?

Split ticketing means grabbing two tickets for different parts of a journey, instead of the whole trip. Bizarrely, it's often far cheaper.

Don't worry - it's also completely within the train operating companies' terms and conditions. For more ways to keep your spending off the buffers, see the Cheap Train Tickets guide.

    The 5 split ticketing need-to-knows
    • This tool searches single tickets using only one split.

Of course, buying three or even four split tickets for one journey could possibly cut costs more. But we use on ... Read more »

#Greece travel advice Q - A: Tourists urged to bring cash not cards on holiday - News - Advice - Travel - The Independent

The Foreign Office has advised British tourists travelling to Greece to avoid relying on cards and that cash will be the best form of currency as the country enters a week of political and economic uncertainty.

Greece is close to a financial collapse with the stock exchange closed and banks shut all week after the European Central Bank (ECB) said that further credit to the nation was being refused after the eurozone rejected the latest bailout extension pleas from Greek politicians.

With new proposals put forward by creditors, the Greek people will go to the polls on Sunday to have their say on whether they agree with the latest round of austerity proposals. Having already overwhelmingly backed the anti-austerity, ultra left party Syriza in January, the future of Greece's place in the eurozone looks uncertain.

#Health in Switzerland - Lonely Planet

An embassy, consulate or hotel can usually recommend a local doctor or clinic. The quality of health care in Switzerland is generally very high.

    Altitude Sickness

This disorder can occur above 3000m, but very few treks or ski runs in the Swiss Alps reach such heights. Headache, vomiting, dizziness, extreme faintness, and difficulty in breathing and sleeping are signs to heed. Treat mild symptoms with rest and simple painkillers. If mild symptoms persist or get worse, descend to a lower altitude and seek medical advice.

    Ticks

These small creatures can be found throughout Switzerland up to an altitude of 1200m, and typically live in underbrush at the forest edge or beside walking tracks.

Always check your whole body if you’ve been walking through a potentially tick-infested area. If a tick is found attached, press down around the tick’s head with tweezers, grab the head and gently pull upwards. Avoid pu ... Read more »

#Health Information for Travelers to Canada - Traveler view

    Vaccines and Medicines

You should be up to date on routine vaccinations while traveling to any destination. Some vaccines may also be required for travel.

Ask your doctor what vaccines and medicines you need based on where you are going, how long you are staying, what you will be doing, and if you are traveling from a country other than the US.

You can get hepatitis B through sexual contact, contaminated needles, and blood products, so CDC recommends this vaccine if you might have sex with a new partner, get a tattoo or piercing, or have any medical procedures.

    • Travelers involved in outdoor and other activities in remote areas that put them at risk for bat bites or other animal bites (such as adventure travel and caving).
    • People who will be working with or around animals (such as wildlife professionals and researchers).

#How Much Does it Cost to Travel the World For a Year?

The single most frequently asked question I get about my travels concerns the cost of budgeting for a solo round the world trip. While understanding how I pay for it all tops the list of questions, the actually cost of traveling for a year around the world is the big unknown. I had no idea how much my RTW trip would cost when I left—some people reported around $10,000 (which seemed absurdly low) while others have spent upwards of $40K to travel a bit more luxuriously. So I thought of it as a grand adventure. How much will it cost, and how long can I keep going with my freelance income.

Over that year, I tracked every single dollar I spent on the road.

My full tally is complete and I traveled around the world for for 328 days (11 months) through 15 countries and tracked what I spent, what each and every country cost, and where I could have done better.
