#Patagonia: Trip of a Lifetime

In our latest instalment of the world's greatest journeys, Chris Moss offers an inspiring, practical guide to visiting the life-changing wilderness of Patagonia.

9:46AM BST 18 Oct 2012

Comments

Vast and empty, wind-swept and barren, Patagonia is an archetypal landscape of the imagination. Where the pampas run out around the Rio Negro, the land becomes unfriendly to human settlement, and if you drive down the great highways Argentina s Ruta 3 and Ruta 40 or Chile s Carretera Austral you ll see mainly sheep, flightless rhea and llama-like guanacos. Eventually you come to the Andes, where ice-fields break through to form glaciers on the lakesides, or to the lonely island of Tierra del Fuego.

Patagonia enlightened the young, inquisitive Charles Darwin and inspired aviator and author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. It imbued ornithologist WH Hudson with a mystical sense of nature. Forty years ago, Bruce Chatwin visited and his In ... Read more »

#Portugal Travel

Once a powerful seafaring kingdom that dominated the merchant routes to Africa, South America and the Orient, Portugal today is a friendly, low-key place with a laidback vibe and a fantastic coastline, much of it fringed by golden sands and endless dunes. Its rolling interior is perfect for exploring on foot, by kayak, by bike or even on horseback – though a large part of the country’s charm comes from languorous days on the beach, dining on fabulously fresh seafood and kicking back with a beer to watch the sunset over the Atlantic. The legacy of Portugal’s former wealth and power can be seen in its historic cities – yet the capital, Lisbon, superbly sited on the Tejo river estuary, is as popular today for its lively clubbing scene as for its grand Manueline monuments and medieval alleyways. Porto meanwhile, the country’s second city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the best place to sample some of the many varieties of Portugal’s other notable contribution to t ... Read more »

#Places to Visit in Chile

A long, narrow sliver of land, clinging to the edge of a continent, Chile has often drawn attention to itself for its wholly implausible shape. Seen in the pages of an atlas, the country’s outline strikes you as aberrant and fantastical; 4300km in length (the equivalent of Norway to Nigeria), and with an average width of just 175km, the very idea of it seems absurd. Once you’re on Chilean soil, however, these boundaries make perfect sense, and visitors quickly realize that Chile is a geographically self-contained unit. The Andes, the great mountain range that forms its eastern border, are a formidable barrier of rock and ice that cuts the country off from Argentina and Bolivia. The Atacama Desert, a 1000km stretch of parched wasteland, separates it from Peru to the north. And to the west, only a few islands dotted in the Pacific Ocean break the waves that roll onto Chile’s coast from Australasia.

All this has created a country distinct from the rest ... Read more »

#Portugal summer holidays guide

Planning a holiday to Portugal? Read our guide to the best regions, including expert advice on Lisbon, Sintra, Porto, Alentejo, and the Algarve. By Mary Lussiana, Telegraph Travel Portugal expert.

Hidden coves and limestone rocks resembling abstract sculptures rising out of the blue ocean run all along the coast, bordering the golden sands that stretch from the west coast with its wild waves – a paradise for surfers – to the more gentle central and eastern Algarve, where long, accessible beaches alternate with mere handkerchiefs of sand at the end of dizzyingly steep steps carved into the rocks.

Getting there

British Airways  (0844 493 0787; ba.com ) operates from Heathrow to Lisbon (from £109 return) and from Gatwick to Faro (from £134 return). The seasonal route from Heathrow to Faro re-starts at the end of March (from £153 return) and from London City to Faro during July and August  (fro ... Read more »

Verified Purchase

We bought this kayak for a recent trip to Cape Cod. Used is in a bay with mild current and wind for about a week. Here are the things I like about this product:

- Easy to carry, set up and store. - This is the most important part about an inflatable kayak.

- The materials appears to be sturdy and the appearance is great.

- The paddle can be separated into three pieces and very easy to fit into any spaces in the car.

- The storage bag that comes with it is large enough that things fit in pretty easily.

Here comes my major issue: to get the kayak to go straight, a skeg is a MUST! The manufacture should announce that black and white in large font. You can still paddle it but it takes a lot effort. If there are two peopl ... Read more »

#Seven Best Budget Travel Destinations

Traveling frugally doesn’t mean missing out, especially if you’re willing to think outside of the box when it comes to destinations. There are parts of the world where ten dollars can you buy you a meal, a beer and bed, not to mention excursions like cliff jumping or scuba diving.

Here’s a compendium of all the best budget travel destinations from some of my favorite travel bloggers on the web. Note that I did not include the cost of actually getting there or the cost of a visa to visit, so some of these destinations may be pricey to reach, depending on your nationality and where you are traveling from.

The full spelling of its capital, Bangkok, was clearly finalised before the days of Twitter. It is known to Thais as Krung Thep Maha Nakho, but its full ceremonial name is Krungthepmahanakhon Amonrattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilokphop Noppharatratchathaniburirom Udomratchaniwetmahasathan Amonphimanawatansathit Sakkathattiyawitsanukamprasit (a Tweet-busting 169 characters).

Thailand has 1,430 islands, among the most famous of which is Koh Phi Phi Lee – it featured in Danny Boyle’s film The Beach .

One of the country’s most unusual festivals is the annual Monkey Buffet, held in front of the Pra Prang Sam Yot temple in Lopburi province. More than 600 monkeys are invited to feast on over two tonnes of grilled sausage, fresh fruit, ice cream and other treats. The locals see it as a thank you to the monkeys which inhabit the village and bring thousands of tourists there each year.

#Thailand Travel

What is it about Thailand that makes it a major tourist destination? It could be the mouth watering cuisine, the exotic culture including magnificent temples and palaces, the spectacular scenery which includes the multitude of pristine white sand beaches and turquoise seas, majestic mountains, fast flowing rivers wending their way through the jungle or its long history and archaeological sites.

Perhaps it s the friendly welcome from the Thai people. Thailand is often called the land of smiles and rightly so. The people will make an impression on you with their gentleness and polite, respectful approach. Perhaps this involves the major religion here, Buddhism which is all pervasive. Avery revered person is the King of Thailand and that is why the country is called the Kingdom of Thailand with its constitutional monarchy

You can bring your pet dog, cat or ferret into the UK without quarantine as long as it meets the rules of the pet travel scheme. These rules also allow you to take your dog, cat or ferret to other countries and territories and return with them to the UK without the need for quarantine.

Some changes were made to the pet travel scheme on 29 December 2015. They are explained in our guidance on the changes .

If you are looking to bring animals into the UK for sale or re-homing then you will need to comply with the rules governing trade in these animals .

It is important that you comply with these rules; they are in place to keep the UK free from rabies and certain other exotic diseases. Is time travel theoretically and practically possible? If so, how can paradoxes such as the grandfather paradox be avoided?

Time travel is the concept of moving between different points in time in a manner analogous to moving between different points in space. either sending objects (or in some cases just information ) backwards in time to some moment before the present, or sending objects forward from the present to the future without the need to experience the intervening period (at least not at the normal rate).

Although time travel has been a common plot device in fiction since the 19th century, and one-way travel into the future is arguably possible given the phenomenon of time dilation based on velocity in the theory of special relativity (exemplified by the twin paradox ), as well as gravitational time dilation in the theory of general relativity. it is currently unknown whether the laws of physics would allow backwards time travel.

If you gave a traveller ?500, they will visit five places over five weeks while trying to avoid the habits of a tourist. When they return home, the traveller will say the tourist blew their money while the tourist will claim the traveller blew their time .

Personally, I think travellers who snub their noses at tourists are short-sighted. I ve m ... Read more »
