The UK Department for Transport defines workplace travel plans as a package of measures produced by employers to encourage staff to use alternatives to single-occupancy car use. The first Travel Plans in the UK were adopted in Nottingham by Nottinghamshire County Council in 1995. Travel plans are now common in the UK, and are becoming common in Australia and New Zealand.

A workplace can choose to develop a travel plan at any time, or could be required to develop a travel plan as a condition of planning consent for an expansion or new development. Typical actions in a workplace travel plan include improving facilities for pedestrians and cyclists (showers, lockers and cycle parking), promotion and subsidy of public transport, and encouraging carpooling, working from home and teleconferencing.

Making it safer and easier for children to walk, cycle or catch public transport to school has long-term health benefits, reduces air pollution and traffic congestion, and helps ... Read more »

Directory of holiday and travel auction sites, including charity auctions, in the UK, US and Worldwide.

Tips on bidding for travel and holidays on an auction site there are some great bargains to be had when buying a holiday, flight or villa rental by auction, but there are some things to watch out for too some of this advice sounds obvious but it's easy to get carried away with the lure of a bargain.

Always read the small print! Before you start bidding read the auction site T Cs as well as any conditions dictated by the sellers themselves. If these are not displayed ask to see them before you bid.

Where the auction site provides it, check the sellers feedback ratings No feedback ratings? Then ask yourself how reputable the site is.

Know how the site works before you start to avoid getting hit with unexpected fees. On some you'll just need to be registered to bid, others charge a fee sometimes for each bid. If you're new to biddin ... Read more »

It has been 25 years since both United and American Airlines began offering passengers reward miles for flying with them. To mark the anniversary, both airlines are offering a special double mileage promotion. I have been a United Mileage Plus member for 22 years. (Ugh, can I be that old?) and have racked up enough miles to fly back and forth from Chicago to Hawaii a number of times. If you currently are not a member of either United or American’s frequent-flier programs, this offer may be the incentive you have been waiting for.

United customers can earn double miles on all published-fare tickets booked on united.com between May 18 and May 31. Travel must be completed by November 15th. If you are not a frequent-flier member, you must register prior to travel, but no later than May 31st. The offer is valid only on United, United Express and Ted flights, and not on United partners such as US Airways or Air Canada.

American Airlines’ double mileage promotion is nearly ... Read more »

Mongolia is far-flung and little visited yet has much to offer, from the stunning scenery and wildlife of mountains and deserts to the emerging luxury hotels and restaurants of capital Ulaanbaatar.

History and culture abound in Mongolia and outside the main cities many Mongolians continue to live the traditional life of the malchin (herdsmen). Transporting their goods by camel and residing in portable felt and canvas tents, the nomadic lifestyle of modern-day Mongolia would still be recognisable to Ghengis Khan, the most famous Mongol of them all.

Mongolia's vast areas of wilderness, from the sprawling Gobi desert to the snow peaked mountains of the Bayan- lgi, offer plenty of scope for adventurous outdoor enthusiasts. Fishing, jeep tours, horse and camel riding, mountain biking and birdwatching are but a few of the activities on offer. Culture hunters are also well catered for with numerous temples and ruins to explore.

Infrastructure is poor and un ... Read more »

Runaway Bay is up there with Negril as far as pretty beaches

All week long, contributorLinda Marsicano will be reporting from Jamaica. Got a question about traveling to Jamaica or what to do when you're there? Put it in comments below and we'll answer it for you!

Two trips to Jamaica does not make us experts by any means but we have picked up a few tips that might help first-time visitors. Based on our experiences, here are some lessons learned (some of which we learned the hard way).

DO go off the resort. Jamaica is full of all-inclusives and while it's easy to sit back snd drink the day away at the beach or pool, don't miss out on what's outside of the cushy resorts. One of our favorites so far was our lunch at Leon's Lobster Hut . That said, do be careful. Yes, go off the resort but it's a good idea to ask shuttle drivers or resort staff before you wander off not kn ... Read more »

The dreaded single supplement is a true trip killer. Tour operators look at the single traveller as a revenue drain, compared to funds netted with pairs that book. With hotels basing rates on double occupancy, solo participants take on the burden of making up the financial shortfall. Travel costs for them can be double or more for the same vacation packages .

Many would rather stay home than feel like they are being punished for not having a companion, or not wanting to bring them along. Single supplements send the wrong message. Translated, they are akin to: We don t want you on the trip, unless you re willing to compensate us financially.

It s not the tour operators fault. Hotel rooms are designed with twos in their brains. It is difficult to find a hotel that even offers single rooms. And far too often, restaurants view the solo traveller as someone who is not going to linger, drink, and ring up a significant bill. Singles rhyme off all the times they were seated ... Read more »

Thirty years ago Cancun was a sandbar known only to local fishermen. Today it is an amazing resort boasting numerous luxury hotels, nearly all of them fronting the magnificent 20 kms beach. If you are looking for old Mexico, you will have to take a day trip to one of the Mayan ruin sites, since Cancun is very modern and has no colonial heritage. Standards of service are very high here, and you will not find the sleepy "maсana" attitude which sometimes prevails in more laid back resorts.

Getting around in Cancun is a breeze there is a bus service which travels the length of the hotel strip every few minutes, 24-hours a day, and the cost is about $1.00.

On the open-sea side of the hotel zone the sea is sometimes quite rough watch out for the warning flags and exercise caution. However most hotels have impressive pool facilities, and you may prefer the luxury of a swim-up bar. For those of you who can't relax in the sun for more than a few hours, there's tennis, gol ... I am a regular visitor of BCM Touring and many other travel forums like Team BHP. Based on BCM Touring advice, I decided to book a Kallada bus ticket from Kottayam to Bangalore even though there were other buses cheaper than Kallada and at more convenient times.

I had booked the ticket through Travelyaari (online)

PNR: OHYD125699

Ticket Number: 333131475997

Journey date: 18-May-2015

Boarding time: 6.50pm

Boarding point: @@@@hi Nagar

Seat Number: F1

I reached the @@@@hi Nagar stop at 6.30pm and immediately confirmed the bus timings by calling the number 9387375500 (as provided in the ticket). The person over the phone asked me to come over to Medical College junction at 7pm stating that the bus has been delayed and will come to Medical College junction at 7. I call the same number at 7.15pm and he asked me to stay at the Medical college junction till 7.30pm as the bus has been delayed. At 7.25pm I get a message with the ... Read more »

You can't blame other cities if they cast a covetous eye upon London and grumble, “It isn't fair.” How can a 2,000-year-old settlement with such a deeply entrenched history—and such familiar-to-the-point-of-predictable iconography—stand at the leading edge of design, architecture, fashion, cuisine, fine art, and pop culture? By embracing international styles and influences (and people) as much as its own. The city's millennial resurgence resulted from a blend of clear-eyed preservation, savvy reinvention, and bold innovation. Only here could a brash new landmark like the Tate Modern so swiftly find its place in the old cityscape; only here could the cutting-edge gastro pub (an alien term less than 20 years ago) so readily slip into local parlance and routine. Perhaps that's because behind all this novelty, the London that always endures, unperturbed by these curious new arrivals or just slightly bemused. Each year, millions of tourists travel to London to experience its modern-day r ... Read more »

Flights to China are served by Air China (CA) (www.air-china ). Autumn, when tourist numbers are down but the weather in many regions remains pleasant, is a good time to find flights. Fares can be higher in and around peak holiday seasons such as Chinese New Year.

    Flight times:

From London to Beijing is approximately 10 hours and from Los Angeles is 12 hours 30 minutes.

International services run from Beijing to Moscow on both the Trans-Mongolian Railway (via Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia) and the Trans-Manchurian Railway (via northeastern China). The Trans-Siberian route runs from Moscow to Vladivostock, and from here you can also cross into China, although the other two routes are more direct. Non-stop, the journey by train takes around 1 week. Allow more time if coming from London or other locations in Western Europe. Train timetables can be found at Man at Seat 61 (www.seat61 ).

From Vietnam to China it is possible to take a train which travels from Han ... Read more »

As one of the country s oldest cities, and the capital of Massachusetts, Boston s historical legacy is unmatched in the US. Strolling through a city founded in 1630 is like reading pages from a history book. Key moments such as the American Revolution to the abolition of slavery are celebrated and encapsulated in numerous buildings and monuments. But beyond its revolutionary past, Boston is a thriving metropolis with plenty to offer visitors.

It feels a bit like London, with each district having its own charms and attractions; in fact, many consider Boston to be one of the most European-feeling cities in North America. And the city is so compact that it s best to explore its sprawling streets and diverse neighbourhoods on foot, from upmarket Beacon Hill and studenty Harvard to the Italian North End, Irish-influenced Southie, and Back Bay with its shops and caf s.

Its setting couldn t be better with the Boston Harbour and Charles River, while there are many parks, wha ... Read more »
