It s easy to get carried away with customer reviews on the world wide web. I m one of the worst culprits; I pore incessantly over reviews before I commit to anything. And although conducting these silent surveys is oddly empowering, they become debilitating as you find conflicting opinions .

So, I ll do something a little different. Rather than post reviews based on personal opinions, I want to look at Intrepid Travel and Gap Adventures from an objective perspective. For example, who travels where. what type of travel does each specialise in, what are the typical trip lengths. how do costs compare, etc.

History - In 1988, Darrell Wade and Geoff Manchester traveled with a group of friends across the Sahara in a converted tipper truck. It was during this trip that the two university friends developed the idea for a style of travel that would take small groups of people ... Read more »

The Manaslu Trek (or Manaslu Circuit Trek) is a 14-day tea-house trek which circumnavigates the 8th highest peak in the world (8,156 m). The trek has all the elements of other treks in Nepal including both Hindu and Buddhist culture, protected wildlife, rhododendrons and wild flowers, raging rivers, precarious bridges and stunning mountain scenery.

The trek is much easier than it used to be with greatly improved trails along the Budi Gandaki river gorge. In terms of difficulty, it is comparable with the Annapurna Circuit Trek or Everest Base Camp trek. Its highlight is undoubtedly the spectacular unhindered views of Manaslu.

Just over 2,000 people complete the trek per year with more than half visiting in October. This is substantially fewer than visiting Annapurna, Everest or Langtang. There are two main reason for the fewer numbers.

The first reason is that the trek used to require camping, as there were too few tea-houses along the trail. In particular the ... Read more »

Gulliver summarizes the story of his life before the main plot begins with his arrival in the country of Lilliput. He is the third of five sons of the owner of an estate in Nottinghamshire, England. He is educated at Cambridge University and serves an apprenticeship with a surgeon. After marrying a woman called Mary Burton, he takes up a post as surgeon aboard a ship traveling to the South Seas. On the way to the East Indies, the ship is blown onto rocks and wrecked. Gulliver manages to swim to land and falls asleep from exhaustion. When he awakes, he finds that he is tied to the ground and surrounded by tiny human beings of six inches high. He tries to escape his bonds, but they fire arrows at him, causing him pain. European and World Backpacking

TWO HUNDRED YEARS ago the cost was seven years to a lifetime of servitude for average people making a one-way crossing of the Atlantic. Now it can be funded by a few days of waiting tables.

When booking through an agent, always specify you want the lowest possible fare, as there may be specials which do not fall under economy or APEX. Moreover, not every agent--even with the budget specialists listed below--will be equally competent or motivated to find the cheapest ticket. They may not know about a great deal the next cubicle has been selling all week, or the commission may not merit bothering much.

Likewise, buying a ticket on the Internet is not the same as getting the cheapest price. As with any travel agent, you may be offered the lowest price, an average price, or a test price. You still have to make comparisons and move boldly when a deal presents itself. A good strategy is to book the best-value, fully-refundable fare ea ... Read more »

These days, with money so tight my trip planning process always starts with a hunt for a deal. I'll bet you have your favorite websites to check first for flight specials. George Hobica hopes one of them is AirfareWatchdog.com. He founded that site 15 years ago to help connect travelers on a budget with the best airline buys. George joins us to talk travel deals and answer some of your trip planning questions.

Is it easier or harder to get an amazing discount on a flight now compared to 15 years ago?

"The reason we started AifareWatchdog was because it was easier to find fares if you knew where to look. What happened was when there were more airlines, there was more competition. We would see many unadvertised airfare wars, where some fares would go down to $88 roundtrip coast to coast. Delta would attack Northwest, Northwest would attack Delta. Of course, now they are the same airline, so that doesn't happen so much," says Hobica. "We also saw a lot of fat finger far ... Read more »

A combination of inattentiveness, distraction, and seeing only the things we expect to see can lead to fatal results when a vehicle collides with a stopped car and/or its passengers on the roadside.

Plainly, any time you need to stop, you should pull your car as far over to the shoulder as possible, even if it means your passenger side doors can't be opened. And as well as turning on your side lights and hazard flashers, you absolutely should consider deploying one or more of these safety cones as well.

Special Features of the Pack-a-Cone

The Pack-a-Cone Safety Flashing Hazard Cone has two important differences from the 'normal' safety cones, such as you'll see ringed around any stopped professional road maintenance type vehicle.

Firstly, it has a flashing strobe light inside it to greatly increase its night-time visibility.

Secondly, it is lightweight and collapsible, which makes it easy and convenient to store in your trunk.

Compared with other cities in the western US, Las Vegas is a relatively recent arrival. It was founded in 1905, and for many years it was merely a small settlement in the middle of the desert. However, several pivotal events would come together in less than twenty years that would help Las Vegas grow into what it is today:

Welcome!

Southern Californians crowd Interstate 15 every weekend going back and forth to Vegas. Expect this drive to be crowded and frustrating, unless you can come and go at off-peak hours. However, many find the 280 mile (450 km) drive along I-15 restful and scenic. Attractions along the I-15 include the California towns of Barstow and Baker ; the Mojave Desert ; and small hotel-casinos in Nevada at Primm (at the California border) and Jean, respectively. Those who traverse the I-15 should remember that they are crossing a desert, and should carry (and drink) ample amounts of water, especially on hot summer days where temperatures can reach 110°F ... Marriott Travel Packages are the best way to use Marriott Rewards points IF you need some airlines miles as well. These packages consists of 7 nights stay at a chosen category or tier (Ritz-Carlton Marriott Vacation Club) hotel and set number of miles at various airline programs. You will also get a 25% coupon for Hertz rental that I have never been able to use as rates that are not discount eligible have always been a better deal.

The reason why these are such a good deal is that you will get a nice chunk of airline miles in the process. You can collect airline miles on your Marriott stays but it is far better just continue crediting towards Marriott points and take advantage of MegaBonuses. Then, when you have enough points in your account to redeem for a Marriott Travel Package, you just issue one.

There are few things as alluring as the promise of free travel to exotic destinations. The banks know this, and have long offered travel rewards to their customers for using their credit cards. In turn, savvy credit card users maximize their rewards to travel in comfort and style well beyond their means. (See also: How Travel Rewards Credit Cards Really Work )

Recently, I was explaining this to an European executive sitting next to me in Lufthansa s Airbus A380 business class while returning home from a vacation in Italy. I told him that my family and I could not possibly have paid for our three $7,000 tickets for this flight. But thanks to my travel rewards credit cards, my journey was all but free after some taxes and fees. Through careful selection and use of rewards, these kinds of trips have become an annual occurrence for my family. I book a flight on February 16, 2015 for a flight on April 2015. Unfortunately, I will be no longer able to travel on April 2015 and decided to call OneTravel to move my flight to July 2015 instead. The agent was very, very rude and impatient; condescending and disrespectful. She had the audacity to tell me that I was wasting her time, when I realized that she gave me a misleading price. At first she told me that the told cost for changes and penalties would be $200, to which I agreed.

I had a horrible and disturbing experience with OneTravel on my last booking, and I feel that I have the duty to warn other unsuspecting consumers from these appalling practices that are in place. As a courtesy, I explain you to the situation so that OneTravel can consider this incident. My father is lying dying in New Zealand, and I needed to go as fast as possible to Auckland. Therefore, I tried to select a reputable company to book my flight to be sure nothing goes wrong.

By Insure - Last updated: Jan. 30, 2015

In a perfect world for beleaguered travelers, there would be no extensive security checks, delayed flights or lost baggage. Travel insurance aims to take some of the sting out of travel problems.

The need for travel insurance is primarily an economic one, says Jim Grace, president and CEO of InsureMyTrip, an online travel insurance comparison site. Travelersare concerned about protecting their investment.

Travel insurance is offered for cruises, tours, flights and vacation home rentals and can cover:

  • Medical: There is nothing worse than being sick when you are supposed to be on vacation. Medical travel insurance pays for doctor visits and illnesses that occur during your trip, such as treatment for malaria or food poisoning, prescription drugs and laboratory work to diagnose illnesses. Policies cover local ambulance service and emergency medical situations that require surgeries (and ofte ... Read more »

Cambodia is one of my all time favorite destinations. It may be a flawed, corrupt, barren country, but it is filled with some of the most amazing people I ve ever encountered, rich history, delicious food, beautiful coastline, and a lively nightlife. Cambodia is a country still trying to find its wat. Development hasn’t been great, as corrupt officials have hindered growth by selling off most of the country to investors. But in all my visits here, I always fall more madly in love with the place and can t recommend it enough to everyone I meet.

Accommodation Most guesthouses have dorm beds for between $3-10 USD per night. Private rooms range from $5-13 USD per night. You can get comfortable hotels for $12-22 USD with air con, tv, and other amenities. Beyond that, the sky is the limit but I ve never needed to spend more than $25 USD per night for luxury in this country.

The roots of German history and culture date back to the Germanic tribes and after that to the Holy Roman Empire. Since the early middle ages Germany started to split into hundreds of small states. It was the Napoleonic wars that started the process of unification, which ended in 1871, when a large number of previously independent German kingdoms united under Prussian leadership to form the German Empire (Deutsches Kaiserreich). Getting around Europe

To find the cheapest flights to Europe:

    • Plan a one-direction trip, such as London to Amsterdam to Madrid. Then buy an open-jaw ticket where you arrive in London and return home from Madrid.
    • Look into a surface-sector ticket if you’re traveling some of the legs of your trip via surface transport.
    • Icelandair has some great airfare deals if you fly via Reykjavik. Aer Lingus offers deals for flights to Europe via Dublin or Shannon.

Europe is well connected by planes, trains and buses. It is easy (and cheap) to take trips between major cities in Europe, especially if you start or finish in the UK, Ireland, Germany, or France—all countries where low-cost carriers fly extensive routes.

Trains run throughout mainland Europe and, since the Eurotunnel, also connect France to the UK. Check out www.raileurope for tickets and advice as well as interactive route maps.

Spring months of March to May and autumn (between September and November) are often considered the best time to book flights to Paris, as the locals have returned from their summer mass exodus and you’ll get a true insight into the city’s usual ambient atmosphere.

    Traveler Spanish to Real Spanish

Bastante, spoke The Salvadoreno with a smile when a visitor to The Farm asked if I can speak Spanish.

Bastante enough was the correct way to put it.

But more accurately, I don t speak Spanish. I speak traveler Spanish. Which, simply put, is Spanish spoken to be understood, rather than grammatically correct. It is a bastardized form of the language that is meant to communicate simple statements in simplified ways, rather than sound like a local.

When I speak my traveler Spanish everyone knows right off that I am a Gringo. but they also understand what I say.

I know and can use the present simple tense with pure fluidity. If something is going on right now, I can talk about it; if I want to know something that is currently happening, I can find out what it is; if I wish to express my current sentiments, I can do so A-OK.

7 Wonders of the World in 13 Days

    Credit: Megan Sullivan

This gear list is organized from light to heavy travel and includes both domestic and international travel checklists. Start with Packing Light which we define as packing a bag small enough that it fits under the seat in front of you. If going abroad, add in items from the International Travel Checklist. If you need more space, read Traveling with Just a Carry-On.

This is everything OutdoorGearLab co-founder Chris McNamara took on a trip around the world in 13 day s to visit the 7 Wonders of the World. The bag weighed only six pounds and was plenty as long as you do laundry in your hotel sink every once in a while .

    • Backpack Take a pack smaller than 30 liters so it will fit under the seat in front of you. This insures that, if overhead space is taken, you won't have to check in your bag. A top loading pack is ideal because it lets you cram in extra items. We li ... Read more »

Travel medical insurance is for travelers who are leaving their home country. It provides coverage for medical emergencies and evacuations. Depending on the company selling it, it is sometimes called International Medical Insurance, International Travel Insurance, or Worldwide Medical Insurance.

These plans are for travelers leaving their home country that are concerned with coverage abroad. Many insurance plans don t cover you once you leave the US, and an accident or illness abroad would not be covered.

With a travel medical plan, the focus is on emergency medical and evacuation costs.

If you are abroad and have an accident or become ill, it would cover medical costs for you. Emergency dental treatment is usually included and emergency transportation (ambulance, air lift) services are also covered.

When you visit (or return to) India, you will be given India Arrival Card (Foreigners only, not for Indian citizens) and a separate customs declaration form in the plane. Please complete those forms and keep them ready. As soon as you deplane, you will have to stand in line for immigration clearance. Give the arrival card (if applicable) and customs forms to the officer. They will return your passport and stamped customs form. An officer will check to make sure you have the required passport, visa, etc. and will stamp your passport as proof that you legally entered India on a given date. Make sure your passport is stamped and has the correct date before you leave immigration counter.

Once you clear immigration formalities, you will proceed to the luggage trolley to retrieve your luggage from the conveyer belt. (Luggage trolleys are free.)

Before you leave the airport, you will see two channels to exit.

Travel nursing is a nursing assignment concept that developed in response to the nursing shortage. This industry supplies nurses who travel to work in temporary nursing positions, mostly in hospitals. While travel nursing traditionally refers specifically to the nursing profession, it can also be used as a blanket term to refer to a variety of travel healthcare positions, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, and even doctors and dentists. [ 1 ]

The usual requirements for becoming a travel nurse are a minimum of one year of clinical experience with two years being preferred in one's specialty and licensure in the state of employment, often granted through reciprocity with the home state's board of nursing. Some trave ... Read more »

In terms of hot pet industry trends. pet travel is absolutely exploding.

Here are some whys, hows and ways to get on the pet travel bandwagon.

My Personal Experiences with Pet Travel

Back in 2003, I made a 700-mile move from New Jersey to Western North Carolina when I landed a job as an editor of a magazine in the Smoky Mountains.

As I was making the trek with my two cats, Daisy and Amanda, I was obliged to stay in pet-friendly motels along the way. (What an adventure!)

In those days, the only pet travel resource I was able to locate was the site takeyourpet. an Internet directory of pet-friendly lodging establishments.

While I managed to find motels that allowed me to bring my cats, they provided lodging…that’s it.

I had to bring my own litter boxes (I purchased disposable ones), food and water bowls .

Business travel is a way of life. I have not worked in an office full time since my college days, and I know for a fact I could never go back to that kind of situation.

Some people are drawn to spending their lives on the road, while others prefer the stability that comes with a 9 to 5. For those of you who are just dying to get your very own travel job, I d love to help.

There are numerous ways to get out of the office and on to the road, though most of them do require some sort of specialized education. A regular ole bachelor s degree is a good start, though.

Also be sure to check the travel jobs tag to see the latest travel jobs we ve written about on the Business Travel Guide.

There are almost as many ways to make this iconic journey as there are types of pizza, pasta and pastry. You can speed through France and Italy using only high speed connections. You can travel while you sleep on an overnight train. Or you can make the most of your freedom by using regional trains and stopping off in Lyon, Nice or Marseilles.

Or you can head across the mountains into Switzerland, slosh back beer in Munich or stop for a ski break in Innsbruck. With so many options, the journey between Paris and Rome can become an adventure in its own right.

Bear in mind that on fast, overnight and regional train services in Italy and France you’ll need to make a reservation in advance and pay a small fee to do so ... Read more »

But there s a catch: major rail lines in Italy tend to have a vast ridership and seats during rush hours can be difficult to find on Italian regional trains. We can offer tips that will get you over this hurdle. But first, the basics on train travel in Italy.

Traveling by train is usually the best option for visiting

We ll list the types of trains by cost and speed, expensive and fast trains first. These trains are all part of the national rail line, Trenitalia .

Intercity are relatively fast trains that run the length of Italy, stopping at cities and large towns. First and second class service is available. First class coaches offer slightly better

1903 would become a year for the history books. That year the Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur Wright . would fly the first powered, controlled, heavier-than-air airplane at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on December 17, 1903. 1

Most people don't know that it was not in 1903, but in the 1800s, that the Wright brothers, working with kites, had worked out the key issue for flight: control.

While other aviators searched in vain for "inherent stability," Orville and Wilbur created a method for the pilot to control the airplane. The real breakthrough was their ingenious invention of "wing-warping." If the pilot wanted to bank a turn to the left, the wings could be warped to provide more lift on the wings on the right side of the biplane. The brothers worked out a system for 3-axis control that is still used today on fixed-wing aircraft: left and right like a car or boat (a rudder), up and down (the 1903 Wright "Flyer" had its elevator in the front), and banki ... Italy, the land of beauty, fashion, history and culture has been considered as one of the most extended tourist goals in the world. For those who like to journey and travel to romantic places, Italy is the most recognized site to stop at, not only it is loving but it has extremely attractive buildings, monuments and architectural achievements which are part of history, so those who love to scrutinize the meaning at the back of art will find this location to be an implausible historical and artistic puzzle.

Italy, located in southern Europe, is one of the most favored destinations for tourists from all over the world. It is also popularly called the boot attributable to its geographical shape. There is no dearth of places tourists can travel to in this small country, which has a rich cultural heritage. With the exception of the great cities of Rome, Milan and Venice, tourists often travel to the majestic Alps in the northern part of the country. One of the most famous spots i ... Read more »

You can travel to and through Germany by train or air, stay in luxury hotels and even castles and enjoy modern light cuisine at star-rated restaurants.

From adventure to relaxation, a last minute weekend break or a well-planned journey there is something to look at in every town across Germany, and a beer waiting at every local tavern.

If you re in for adventure travel, one thing I recommend is to hike the Teutoburg Forest. covering more than 2,500 km of bike trails or even surf (clothing optional) throughout the South.

Another tip is to spend some quality time in the Black Forest during winter and enjoy skiing and/or sledding extensively. Or, in summer, vacation in the Eifel and Bergisches Land regions to do in summer what one can do in winter sledding on one of the various Sommerrodelbahnen (Summer Sledding Tracks).

Seeking more upscale culture and trade? Wine tours in the South, Romanesque architecture tours in the middle and city tours in ... Read more »

While living in Vietnam I found there frequently wasn't much information or decent photos of places to visit off the beaten track available on the internet - it may be easy to find information on towns on the Sinh Cafe routes but beyond that places were often something of a mystery.

It also seemed that many of the guides I came across didn't express the sheer beauty of the country, with dry descriptions and little information beyond where to sleep. I want to try and correct that with this blog and travel guide - although it is still early days - and plan to cover plenty of the hidden locations that make Vietnam so special.

Still, I'm not a fountain of all knowlege by any means, and I would welcome anyone who is so inclined to send in their own stories, tips and advice to the website to help it grow into an authoritative guide on travel in Vietnam. Similarly if you have questions about your upcoming visit please make contact and I'll do my best to offer any tips I can ... Read more »

The famous birthplace of Bob Marley, reggae and the Rastafari movement, Jamaica s cultural offering to the world is far greater than its size might suggest. With varying degrees of success, beach resorts around the world have attempted to emulate the Jamaican seaside vibe, but once you ve felt the sand between your toes on this Caribbean island, you ll accept no substitutes.

But it s so much more than a beach destination. Beyond the swaying palms and white sands lie misty coffee plantations, the epic Blue Mountains, raging rivers prime for rafting and forests alive with exotic species. It s not all wild. Manicured parks and gardens are a Jamaican speciality and you can spot exuberant clusters of tropical blooms on any street corner of this fertile island.

At the heart of it all, though, is music. From bass-heavy beats pumping out of Kingston s frenetic nightclubs, to harmonious choirs singing in village churches, it is in the air wherever you go. If song satisfies Ja ... Read more »
