When planning a vacation that includes fun in the sun, remember that sunburn isn t fun at all and can quickly put a damper on the activities you ve planned. Not only can it ruin your vacation, but it can ruin your skin as well. Prolonged sun exposure over time can cause skin cancer and premature wrinkles. So you want to be a travel agent working from home, eh? You may be thinking, “Well, I can’t just jump in and start doing it, can I?” Actually, you can. That’s pretty much what I did, back in the early nineties.

But I’m not recommending that you follow my example. Why? Because the “School of Hard Knocks” is the most expensive one you can find! I lost thousands before I figured out what’s what in the travel business.

So let’s take it as a given that you shouldlearn something about what being a travel agent is all about before you go off half cocked and cause yourself (and probably your first clients!) a lot of damage.

How Do Travel Agents Get Trained?

What are your options? Well, there are number of ways that travel agents get training:

  • Apprentice yourself to a travel agent or agency. This is sort of like being an intern. You get no pay (or very little), but you’re learning the ropes.

Brazil (Portuguese: Brasil ) is the largest country in South America and fifth largest in the world. Famous for its football (soccer) tradition and its annual Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro. Salvador. Recife and Olinda. It is a country of great diversity, from the bustling urban mosaic of Sao Paulo to the infinite cultural energy of Pernambuco and Bahia. the wilderness of the Amazon rainforest and world-class landmarks such as the Iguacu Falls. there is plenty to see and to do in Brazil.

Brazil was inhabited solely by indigenous people, mainly of the Tupi and Guarani ethnic groups. Settling by the Portuguese began late in the 16th century, with the extraction of valuable wood from the pau brasil tree, from which the country draws its name. Brazil was settled by the Portuguese and not the Spanish, as were the rest of Central, South and parts of North America in the New World. I wrote this backpacking Europe packing list because packing for travel can often be very difficult — especially for beginners. Many first time travelers make the mistake of bringing way too much gear so travel quickly becomes tiresome. It can also make you a bigger target for thieves because you’re not able to keep track of your belongings as well. This packing guide for Europe will help you know what type of clothes and gear you should bring, but I also give tips for packing light.

ARE YOU FEMALE? Check out our new Women s Packing List for Backpacking Europe  — it is a similar guide to this one but the suggestions are geared toward women .

First, I suggest limiting yourself to 20-22lbs  worth of gear (including your backpack). If you exceed 22lbs (10kg) you start running the risk of exceeding the carry-on weight limit for budget airlines (Ryanair). Even if you don’t plan on taking planes, I still s ... Read more »

There are a handful of trick and tips that any traveler can use to find the cheapest airfare possible without putting an enormous amount of effort into it. The following is some advice on how to fly for less.

The algorithms that airlines use to price their tickets are complex. Keep in mind that there are roughly ten different pricing tiers on each flight for economy class alone, and only around 10% of these tickets will be at the cheapest fare. This means being one of the lucky passengers that lands one of these cheap seats is not only a matter of chance, but is also a true art form. Now, I m not going to get into the specifics of airline pricing here, but I will say that competition with other airlines, the date and time you book your fight, supply and demand, as well as the simple luck of the draw plays into what price pops up on your computer monitor when shopping for a flight.

I have to admit that finding cheap airfare is no longer the art it once was. I can reme ... Read more »

Traveling to Cuba can be one of those life transforming experiences. Here we present some practical information to help make that a reality. There are always two aspects of going to Cuba, the part having to do with the Cuban government, of course, and, especially in the case of the US, the part having to do with your country of residence.

For the Cuban government end, see Cuban Government sites in Cuba, Cuban Interests Section in Washington DC, and Cuban Law, Visas, Security. If you are a Cuban American living in the US, see the very informative new site by the Cuban Interests Section in Washington, DC. You fall under a separate system than other Americans and must tend to those details.

If you are not subject to US law, skip this next section. If you are not a US national but are a resident of the US, you are still subject to these restrictions.

Casey Fenton is the founder of CouchSurfing , a global movement that connects travelers with locals in over 230 countries and territories around the world. Here he talks with  What's Mine Is Yours  author Rachel Botsman about trust and reputation, community decision-making, social entrepreneurship, and the future of travel.

Rachel Botsman: One of the themes I explore in my forthcoming book is how collaborative communities quickly form "trust between strangers." How did you create trust from the outset within the CouchSurfing community?

Casey Fenton: Right from the beginning, we wanted people who had never met each other (and who lived far away) to be able to trust one another. The question we tackled was, “How can we can create that trust via the Internet?” -- not a perfect translation from how we would create trust in the real life.

We were not exactly sure what would work, so we implement ... Read more »

Travel agents plan the transportation and accommodations for their clients. They also evaluate the needs of individuals, families organizations and business people and make the appropriate travel recommendations and arrangements. Travel agents provide advice regarding destinations, attractions, activities, exhibitions, tours and cruise lines. Travel agents often work with business people and arrange their travel needs. Some agents specialize in areas such as business, leisure, or specific parts of the world such as Asia or Europe.

Travel agents utilize travel sources on the Internet to obtain information such as air travel departure and arrival times, hotel reservations, attractions and activities as well as for searching for bargains and discounts. Occasionally, travel agents visit the resorts, hotels and restaurants they recommend to their clients in order to check the quality of the destinations.

I decided that my man and I needed some quiet time alone. I got on the Internet and research places that we could get away to that were within a two hour driving distance. I located an excellent bed and breakfast establishment (in Southern Louisiana).

Two weeks prior to our departure I sent him (via mail) an invitation. The invitation invited him to a get away of his dreams where he would be treated like a king. It only listed the dates and that it was a romantic get away. The week before our departure I created a little note for him to receive each day. The notes gave clues to what he should be expecting. It also listed items that he should bring with him such as a sense of adventure, his imagination, favorite cds and cd player, types of clothing, etc.

The establishment came with a gourmet breakfast. It was a very Southern experience. The place was excellent and we got closer. He commented that no one had ever done anything like ... Read more »

The Ministry of Public Health in Cuba has reported an increase in the number of cases of illness with diarrhea in some areas of the country due to high temperatures and heavy rainfall. The province with the highest incidence is Granma, with most cases being reported from the municipality of Manzanillo.

New Zealand is a country of stunning and diverse natural beauty: jagged mountains, rolling pasture land, steep fiords, pristine trout-filled lakes, raging rivers, scenic beaches, and active volcanic zones. These islands are one of Earth's most peculiar bioregions, inhabited by flightless birds seen nowhere else such as a nocturnal, burrowing parrot called the kakapo and kiwi. Kiwi are not only one of the national symbols – the others being the silver fern leaf and koru – but also the name New Zealanders usually call themselves.

These islands are sparsely populated. particularly away from the North Island, but easily accessible. Hundreds of Walt Disney World package vacations are offered each year. Some are created by the Walt Disney Travel Company, others by airline touring companies, independent travel agents, and wholesalers. Almost all include lodging at or near Disney World plus theme-park admissions. Packages offered by airlines include air transportation.

Prices vary seasonally; mid-March through Easter, summer, and holiday periods are the most expensive. Off-season, forget packages: there are plenty of empty rooms, and you can negotiate great discounts, especially at non-Disney properties. Similarly, airfares and rental cars are cheaper off-peak.

Unofficial Tip

If you consider a non-Disney hotel, check its quality as reported in independent travel references such as the Unofficial Guides. AAA directories, Mobil guides, or Frommer's guides.
