Ah, first class. The name alone conjures images of top-notch treatment, lots of leg room and exotic food choices. Once reserved only for VIP travelers, first class accommodations have become more affordable thanks to upgrades, travel membership clubs and slipping prices. But if you ve never experienced the wonders of it, you re left to ponder what exactly happens in first class.

Cost

Traveling via first class--whether on an airplane, train, boat or other means of transportation--is, on average, more expensive than business class or economy travel. The added cost is due to a bevy of amenities other passengers do not get to enjoy.

Considerations

Placement

On an airplane, first class is usually in the front of the plane. Passengers get to board and de-board first, often without coming into contact with passengers in other sections. On a train, the first class car is usually around the middle. On a cruise ship, placement varies.

Benefits

First class air travel begins before leaving the ground. Many airlines allow first class customers access to a lounge area with free food and beverages, computer connectivity and privacy. Once on board, first class passengers continue with their free food and beverage service--receiving different menu options than other passengers--and enjoy wider seats, increased leg room and free movies.

First class train travel offers wider seats, increased leg room and, depending on the length of the trip, bunk-style beds. In addition, passengers may find an electrical outlet to plug in laptops as well as a carriage attendant who will help store and retrieve luggage.

First class cruise ship travelers may enjoy priority check-in and embarkation, more cabin space, priority seating in dining facilities and turn-down service.

Tip

Many times when a first class section isn t filled to capacity, an attendant will allow lower-paying customers to enjoy the open seats. When you check in, ask about this option in a polite manner and the request may sometimes be granted.
