While some airlines have started charging for checked baggage or charging flight change fees, many airlines also now offer a premium economy class for a higher rate. While premium economy class offers some substantive features that make it an upgrade over economy class, it should not be confused with business class. DifferenceAlthough the features in the premium economy section may differ depending on the airline and plane type, premium economy seating generally is likely to include 1 to 2 inches more seat width than in economy class, a seat that reclines 2 to 3 inches more, and adjustable headrests. The premium economy class seating also may include larger personal video screens, power ports for laptops and electronic devices, and more food choices. CostTravelers should be prepared to pay a significant amount more for premium seating. According to a Seatguru.com study, premium economy cross-Atlantic flights that are booked in advance cost 85 percent more than normal economy-class tickets. Booking a premium economy ticket closer to the departure date might make the ticket for premium economy class drop to about 35 percent higher than a normal economy ticket. Cross-Pacific flights didn't have as large a difference in price based on when a traveler booked his tickets; however, travelers paid about 95 percent more for premium economy class on these flights than they would have in economy class. Premium vs. Business ClassBusiness class seating is approximately 65 percent more expensive than premium economy class seating. Business class seating also offers more than 50 percent legroom. The business class seats are able to recline more than seats in premium economy class. Travelers are more likely to find significant headrests and leg rests in business class as well. Business class travelers also have a wider variety of food and beverage choices. Premium Economy Class Amenities
