Entry requirements

Visas

You need a visa to travel to Australia. British citizens can get the following types of electronic visitor visa:

eVisitor visa direct from the Department of Immigration Border Protection. There is no visa application charge or service fee for this;

Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) via your travel agent or airline. There is no visa application charge, but a service fee of A$20 applies

In certain circumstances you may be asked to undergo a health examination before a visa can be granted, for example if you are aged 75 years or older. Factor in extra time for this when applying for a visa.

On arrival you may be asked to provide evidence of funds to support your stay and a return or onward ticket.

If you hold an ePassport you can use SmartGate to pass through passport control when arriving in Australia. See Department of Immigration Border Protection

Australia travel

Australia s iconic southern charm contrasts with hard outback life in this huge country of red dust and cosmopolitan cities. Party along the east coast cities while spending your days at the beach, or head cross country to dodge kangaroos, explore opal mines and walk around Uluru (Ayers Rock). And, of course, there s plenty of wine and lager along the way.

Australia travel resources

Australia divides the Pacific and Indian oceans, with East Timor, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea to the north and New Zealand three hours flight away the largest of many Pacific nations off the eastern coast.

Australia is a continental landmass, the sixth largest country in the world. The mainland measures a massive 7.682 million square kilometres. Australia is ... Read more »

Backpack Across Europe on $1,000

On Monday, I blogged about living intentionally and how I'm living freely and traveling constantly because that is what I want more than anything.

A couple of times when I mentioned I spent a month (twice) traveling through Europe I've been met with responses like "must be nice to have that kind of expendable income" but I don't have expendable income. And I'm not rich.

Backpacking is actually very cheap . It cost me less to backpack for a month in Europe than it did to pay one months rent.

I made it on about $1,000 (not including airfare, just accommodations, sightseeing and food) both trips and my rent in NYC for our humble studio apartment was $1,550. You could say I saved money backpacking.

I saved up for ... Read more »

Travel Insurance

I can get by without travel insurance, can’t I? It’s just a quick trip overseas.

Unlike a passport, travel insurance isn’t mandatory. But there are more reasons than ever to consider buying insurance when you travel:

  • You or a family member may become ill, get injured or die, and the trip needs to be cancelled
  • There may be unexpected flight delays or cancellations due to bad weather
  • The tour operator, airline, or cruise line may default or declare bankruptcy
  • There could be an airline or transportation strike
  • You may miss connections and have to make alternate plans
  • Your baggage can be lost or stolen
  • The cost of health care, hospitalization, or ambulance abroad could be prohibitive
  • Medicare and domestic medical insurance may not cover you
  • A medical emergency may require evacuation
  • You may have a non-refundable vacation packag ... Read more »

Introducing Belize

With one foot planted in the Central American jungles and the other dipped in the Caribbean Sea, Belize combines the best of both worlds.

Why I Love Belize

By Joshua Samuel Brown, Writer

With its Spanish-speaking neighbors to the south and west and the laid-back Caribbean to the east, Central America's youngest nation offers a cultural mélange – including Maya, mestizo. Garifuna, Creole, Mennonite and more – unrivaled in Central America. Belize is home to verdant jungles, from the Maya Mountains in the southwest to the Shipstern Nature Reserve in the northeast, not to mention ancient ruins, remnants of bygone days as part of the greater Maya kingdom. Then there are the beaches, miles of white sand and blue sea dotted with a nigh-uncountable number of islands big and small. So what's not to love?

Europe

Europe History

As for Europe, a brief chronological account of its significant events begins during prehistoric times with the emergence of Homo sapiens (early man), roughly 40,000 years ago.

Early inhabitants during the Paleolithic Age, in an effort to survive, grouped together into small societies such as bands, and subsisted by gathering plants and hunting for wild animals.

The practice of cultivating the soil, producing crops and raising livestock began in the Neolithic Age some 9,000 years ago; stone tools were used and people began to live in small groups, or villages.

As man continued to journey east-to-west across Eurasia (a combination of Asia and Europe), knowledge of tools and new methods of organization arrived; civilizations flourished as metal axes and arrowhe ... Read more »

    Belize Travel Guide

Sandwiched between Mexico. Guatemala and the shimmering Caribbean Sea, Belize occupies a slice of paradise that is packed with culture, wildlife and a wondrous selection of historical sites. Much of the mainland remains swathed in jungle, where the vestiges of ancient cities punctuate verdant forest canopies. Caracol is the most famous. Its crumbling temples and stone pyramids stand as powerful reminders of the Maya civilisation.

The history is fascinating for sure, but most people visit Belize to see its natural wonders and admirable conservation work; the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary was the first jaguar sanctuary in the world; the island of Half Moon Caye has been entirely dedicated to the conservation of birds; and the protected Belize Barrier Reef harbours an incredible array of marine life. Visitors can swim with sharks and stingrays along colourful walls of coral, or explore the Blue Hole, renowned as one of the world ... Read more »

Lemon takes Ebola questions to NY streets 03:50

But despite the fact that the main safari destinations in southern and eastern Africa are thousands of kilometers from the Ebola-stricken countries of the west, industry leaders say fears of the disease are keeping tourists away.

A survey based on feedback from more than 500 safari operators conducted by African booking company Safaribookings.com found that as of late September, more than half reported a 20 to 70% decline in bookings.

"Numerous safari tour operators report to us that clients view Africa as a single country when it comes to risk assessment," Wouter Vergeer, Safaribookings.com founder, tells CNN.

Vergeer says the impact is most noticeable in East Africa, home to safari hotspots such as Kenya's Masai Mara and Tanzania's Serengeti -- places located nearly 5,000 kilometers from the West Africa Ebola outbreak area.
