Which level of cover do you need?

Basic travel insurance covers medical emergencies and repatriation, up to £5m and baggage claims, up to £300. It includes cover for cancellation, curtailment and trip interruption of up to £1,000 should you need to cancel or interrupt your trip unexpectedly.

Comprehensive Travel insurance includes cover for medical emergency and repatriation of up to £10m; cancellation, curtailment and trip interruption of up to £5,000; baggage loss, up to £2,500; personal liability of up to £2m; and legal protection of up to £25,000.

Travel insurance with pre-existing medical conditions

It's very important that all pre-existing conditions are declared on your travel insurance policy at the time of purchasing. If you have a condition such as high blood pressure, the risk of having a medical emergency related to this is higher than usual, so disclosing all of your conditions means that you'll be covered for any medical emergencies when you're travelling.

Having a medical condition shouldn't stop you from travelling wherever you want. As long as you prepare for your trip properly and make sure you have adequate holiday medical insurance, you will minimise any potential problems, leaving you to enjoy your trip.

Is your medical condition covered?

To make sure you're covered, all medical conditions should be disclosed and confirmed on your travel insurance policy document. Disclosing all existing conditions means you will not be liable for large bills if you fall ill while you're travelling, especially in locations where there is no state health care, such as the USA or other locations outside Europe.

If you're taken ill in the USA. a hospital stay plus the cost of repatriation back to the UK could easily run to tens of thousands of pounds.
