#Save money on travel using your Young Scot card

If you are 16, 17 or 18 you can get cheaper transport on buses, trains and ferries with your Young Scot NEC Card.

Bus Travel

In all local authority areas, so long as you are aged 16, 17 or 18, you can use your Young Scot card to get discounted bus travel.

You would simply scan your card or show it to the bus driver when buying your ticket and you will be able to get a third off of the adult fare.

  • Travel discounts are not valid on premium fare buses, City Sightseeing buses, or bus travel within England.

Train Travel

If you are 16, 17 or 18 years old, your Young Scot NEC allows you to buy rail tickets for travel within Scotland at discounted prices.

You can get:

  • One third off most single or return rail fares.
  • 50 % off all weekly or monthly tickets.
  • One third off most advance purchases.

You no longer need to request a separate rail voucher or use a Scottish Youth Railcard to get access these offers.

Tickets should be bought in person from the Ticket Office or on the train to claim your rail discount, as the discount is not always provided by online ticket providers. Simply ask for the Young Scot discount and show your card to get the reduced fare.

Restrictions

There are certain restrictions on the 1/3rd off rail travel discount. There is a minimum spend if you want to travel before 10am on a weekday. At peak times you must spend £12 minimum on standard day or open return or on standard single tickets in order to qualify for the discount.

There are no peak time restrictions on using the Young Scot Card to buy a season ticket.

Ferry Travel

To get the vouchers you will need to have a Young Scot National Entitlement Card, so if you don’t have one yet, or need a replacement, then check out the Get Your Card section on this website or phone the Young Scot InfoLine on 0808 801 0338 .

If you already have a Young Scot card, and are entitled to the vouchers then you will be sent the vouchers in the post when you turn 16. You will receive 4 free ferry vouchers each year while you are 16, 17 and 18.

If you do not receive your vouchers, please contact your local Young Scot office and they will be sent out to you.

Your ferry vouchers will have your photograph and your Young Scot National Entitlement Card number printed on them.
