Alternate routes for the Central Highway

The Superintendency of Road Transport of People, Freight and Goods (SUTRAN for its acronym in Spanish). advises transport companies, road users and the general public of the following in relation to the Central Highway (Carretera Central):

1. After heavy mud and rock slides on Monday, March 23rd at 4:00 p.m. between kilometers 34 and 51 of the Central Highway, the Highway Patrol ordered that all passenger transport vehicle and light vehicle traffic be suspended to protect travelers safety.

2. Based on the technical evaluation, Prov as Nacional (the highway department) suggests the alternate routes stated below. Trucks with trailers and double-decker buses are prohibited on all but the fourth:

Alternate route one: The highway connecting Lima Canta La Viuda Huayllay Cochamarca turn-off PE-3N Junction (for vehicles coming from Pucallpa, Hu nuco and Cerro de Pasco). The following vehicles are allowed:

Station Wagons

Pickup trucks

Custer-type minibuses

Trucks with up to three axles

Buses with up to three axles (except double-decker buses)

Alternate route two: Carretera Ca ete Lunahuana Zu iga Yauyos turn-off Ronchas Chupaca Pilcomayo (Huancayo). The following vehicles are allowed:

Station Wagons

Pickup trucks

Custer-type minibuses

Trucks with up to two axles

Buses with up to two axles (except double-decker buses)

Alternate route three: Carretera Huaura - Sayan Churin Oyon - Ambo PE-3N Junction (Hu nuco). The following vehicles are allowed:

Station Wagons

Pickup trucks

Custer-type minibuses

Semi-trailer trucks with up to 05 axles

Buses with up to three axles (except double-decker buses)

Alternate route four: PE-1S Junction - Huaral - Acos Huayllay Cochamarca turn-off PE 3N Junction (Cerro de Pasco). The following vehicles are allowed:

Station Wagons

Pickup trucks

Custer-type minibuses

Trucks with up to three axles

Buses with up to three axles (including double-decker buses at reduced speeds).

3. SUTRAN is working with the Traffic Police and the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima to supervise the area around the Yerbateros Terminal and keep unauthorized car and minivan drivers from transporting people hoping to travel down the Central Highway.

4. Drivers planning to use alternate routes must do so in emergencies only, and should be aware that travel times will be increased. They must also take precautions when driving, observing the established speed limits and road signs, not passing on curves or driving in an imprudent or risky manner, in order to guarantee passengers safety.

5. If users of road transportation services have any questions, suggestions or complaints, they can call the toll free AL SUTRAN line at 0800-12345 (landlines) and 2658105 (cell phones) or use the email address comunicate@sutran.gob.pe that provide service 24 hours a day all 365 days of the year.
