5 Essential Travel Supplies for Cats Video

Hi, this is Amber Nurmi. I own Healthy Pet in West Linn, Oregon and I m here with About to discuss with you those five essential things you need when traveling with your cat.

The most important thing to have is a way to contain the animal for both your safety and yours. So, if you re traveling on an airplane, you will need an airline approved crate. If you are traveling in a car, a well ventilated carrier is also important. You can use a wire crate like some people use for dogs because it has more ventilation and can be a little more roomy. Or you can use your standard crate.

You re going to need food and water. Obviously, the food and water bowl. If you have a water bowl that s spill-proof, that is your best option because then you can have water available for your cat the entire time you re on your trip. Cats have a tendency to get dehydrated when they re stressed. So, make sure in addition to the water and dry food that you would normally bring, that you also bring wet food to supplement.

The third most important thing to have on your cat is identification. So, if you and your beloved pet get separated, it s really important for someone to be able to reach you. That name tag should be on their collar at all times and it should have a current number to reach you at.

You need a litter pan and a litter box. It s essential for your cat to have someplace to output what you ve already input. A smaller box that will fit in the crate will work well. Sometimes you might even want to get a litter with an attractant in it because you re in a new place, in unfamiliar territory, and you have the added stress of traveling, and if you can get a litter that has an attractant in it, your cat is more likely to use it.

There are all kinds of natural calmers on the market for your cat and you may be able to find a synthetic pheromone that replicates a calming pheromone for cats that you can spray in the crate, or on the cat. There are also herbal supplements that you can put in their food or directly in their mouth, treats, chews, gels. However you think your cat will take it, they are a natural way of reducing the stress so your cat has a more pleasurable journey and so do you.
