Genoa is one of the great port towns of the Mediterranean. The birth place of Christopher Columbus, it was a bustling hub of commerce and trade during its hey day and is now a charming city that offers visitors much to see and do.

The lighthouse in Genova, also called La Lanterna, is one of the symbols of Genoa

Most people know the aquarium of Genoa. but this is not the only attraction of the city. Truly, its most recognizable symbol is the Lanterna. its lighthouse, but it is not the only one. Genoa is the city with the largest historical center in Europe: with all that history, architecture and art, it'd be impossible to associate the place to one, single thing only. The celebrations for Cristoforo Colombo in 1992 were the occasion to add more interesting emblems, in particular a lift in the old port, and another lift allowing to reach the perfect location to enjoy a panoramic view of the city from the seaside. Both are today among the best loved tourist sp ... Read more »

When you travel, it's important to choose an ergonomic product to carry your stuff. That way, you won't put undue strain on your body as you're walking, or loading and unloading. Shop the drugstore selection of duffle bags, expandable suitcases, luggage sets, and shopping carts. Make sure you purchase plenty of comfort and sleep aids, too. A super-soft eye mask will block out bothersome light and other visual stimuli so you can enjoy deep, rejuvenating sleeps. Look for adjustable straps, a contoured design, and lightweight material. A neck rest will stabilize and support your head and neck while you drive or rest. When you're sitting for extended periods, back-support products are available to improve your posture and increase circulation. Treat yourself to a travel pillow and blankets, too. And if you're prone to motion sickness and nausea, you'll see a variety of items to help you feel your best while you're on the go.

For years, it was the great unmentionable in the travel transaction: insurance. Travel agents were afraid to bring up the subject of travel insurance for fear of losing the overall deal. It was considered a negative.

Not anymore. Whether it's your trip, your possessions, your luggage, or your health, travel insurance — and most important, the right kind of travel insurance — has become an essential item to pack for smart travelers. And if you don't buy travel insurance — or the right kind — more than your trip could be ruined.

According to the U.S. Travel Insurance Association, about 30 percent of Americans purchase travel insurance, an increase from 10 percent before 9/11. The top three reasons are: peace of mind, protection against the unexpected and concern over losing the financial investment in a trip. Some 70 percent of cruisers buy travel insurance.

Realize that best is subjective and relative, so your expectations unfortunately are not realistic.

Hi,

I ve spent multiple seasons guiding for both Spirit Walker Expeditions and Glacier Bay Sea Kayaks. Both are quality companies and locally owned. Both offer really quality lunches (which was always the highlight of my trip as a guide). Spirit Walker requires much more safety and natural history training from their guides.

GBSK only offers guided day trips and self-guided rentals (unless you are confident paddling in strong currents and cold water, I wouldn t suggest renting). They only paddle around Bartlett Cove in Galcier Bay ($100, I think). Unless you are supremely lucky you will not see whales on this trip.

Spirit Walker offers two day trips. One leave from the Gustavus dock a paddles to Pleasant Island (this is the cheaper alternative $130) (This is my all-time favorite trip, paddling to the island and hiking in the old-growth forest). It is un ... Read more »

Cambodia is Asia s fastest growing tourist destination. After about 35 years of non-stop war, this beautiful country is finally re-emerging from the darkness.

Since the time of the Vietnam war in the sixties, Cambodia has had to suffer secret carpet bombings by the United States, followed by the reign of terror of the Khmer Rouge, a Vietnamese takeover, and a further 20 years of civil war.

Following U.N. peacekeeping efforts, the somewhat dubious election of Prime Minister Hun Sen and the dismantling of the Khmer Rouge, the country is now enjoying a period of stability and new-found optimism. It s many wonders are now open to visitors.

The capital city of Phnom Penh (pop. 1 million) is a lively place these days. Cars and motorcycles careen through charming streets lined with many French style buildings dating back to its days as a French colony in the first half of this century. The center of city life is the riverfront boulevard, featuring many bars and rest ... Read more »

Many of us dream of seeing Europe by train, but a lot of first time visitors to Europe are taken aback at just how costly intercity train travel can be on the European continent. In fact train travel in Europe can be so costly that in many cases it is cheaper to fly between cities than it is to take the train. Low cost airlines like Ryan Air have lowered the price of intra-European air travel substantially. Even so, taking the bus can be an even cheaper alternative--and a great way to see the countryside.

Making your bus travel reservations before you leave home is one of the best ways to reduce your stress level by ensuring that the routes you want will be available. While most of the time there will be room on the bus, some popular city-to-city routes can sell out, especially in the summer tourist season. By making your reservations ahead of time you will know for sure that you have a seat waiting for you. In some cases you may also be able to get a discount by booking ear ... Read more »
