#travel to japan #

With the help of Google Translate (and an ability to interpret completely random sentence structure), an American can find out what kind of advice the Japanese give to their own countrymen on how to handle the peculiarities of American culture. Here are some things to look out for if you are visiting America from Japan.

1. There is a thing called “Dinner Plates.” And what goes on them is a mighty disappointment.

In Japan, each person eating gets as many individual dishes as needed for the meal. Sometimes more than 10 dishes per person are used. In America, there is a method where a large bowl or dish is placed in the middle of the table, and you take as much as you like from there, and put it on a big dish said to be a "dinner plate."

In Japan, meals at home are for eating, because your stomach is vacant. At an American’s dinner, there is food, decorations on the table and tableware, and music to produce a fun atmosphere. It is a time for mai ... Read more »

8 Money Myths

8 Myths About Money I grew up on a farm in Nebraska. My family had always worked hard for their money, and as a result, I always equated working hard with making money, with no idea that my beliefs could not have been further from truth. As I educated myself on human behavior and financial strategies, I learned that it s actually the people who make their money work hard for them, rather than the people who work hard for their money, who end up with more of it. Since creating my millionaire-making program, I ve learned that I was not alone. There are many people who shared this same myth.

Much like our views about many things -- people, relationships, food, and health to name a few -- our beliefs came from our parents, our teachers, and other adults in our lives. And it goes back even further, beyond them, back to the circumstances through which they lived, or what they learned from their parents, what their parents learned fro ... Read more »

So you have decided to finally travel to Thailand.  Good for you!  However, you have these questions rolling around in your head of how the trip will go and what you will have to experience when you first get there.  I was in your shoes once myself when I finally decided to go there solo and I was a little apprehensive at first; but I decided why not, I m going!   Do Thai people speak English I wondered?  Yes, a lot of them do in Bangkok and other major areas foreigners travel to; however, if you venture into some areas not frequented by westerners, especially the rural areas, there s a good chance they don t.  No worries!  You will find that Thai people are very warm and friendly toward you and they are more than willing to help you out.  You ll also notice that Thai people smile a lot too; hence the nickname The Land of Smiles .  I had no guidance of what to expect when I first arrived in Thailand except that I would fall in love with her ; and I di ... 7 best rental cars for summer vacation

Renting a car for a summer trip

Whether you don't want to put a lot of miles on your family car or are flying and need transportation when you arrive, renting a car makes sense. In the spirit of family getaways as a warm-weather tradition, Bankrate assembled the seven best rental cars for summer vacation.

Because daily rental costs vary wildly based on the rental company, location and season of the year, rental rates didn't factor into the picks. Bankrate advises shopping around among rental companies for the best deal. Each pick, though, received the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's highest crash-test score of "good" in crash tests. All are also an IIHS "top safety pick."

Air Travel Guidelines

Travelers with epilepsy may have special concerns about traveling by air. Generally speaking, a person with epilepsy does not pose any greater safety risk on a plane than a passenger without epilepsy. There is also no medical evidence that air travel increases the risk of seizures or adversely affects people with epilepsy. On occasion, however, airline and airport personnel may try to prevent an individual with epilepsy from traveling. Federal laws grant travelers with disabilities legal rights to prevent this from happening unless there is a legitimate safety risk.

Your Legal Rights

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires that airports and related facilities, such as parking lots and restaurants be accessible to people with disabilities (see our factsheet on the ADA and Public Accommodations ). Airplanes are not, however, required to comply with the ADA. Instead, a federal law known as the Air Carrier Access Act ... Read more »

A Few More Tips

Dressing appropriately while abroad not only helps you fit in with locals and receive friendlier service, but it also protects you from standing out to pickpockets. When in doubt, look at what the locals are wearing. "The best thing a traveler can do is go to a local clothing store and buy a couple of outfits -- then no one will ever mistake you for a tourist," says travel expert John E. DiScala (a k a Johnny Jet). Plus, your new wardrobe additions make great souvenirs.

Beyond watching what you wear, there are a few other things you can do to make yourself look like less of a traveler. For one, look like you know what you're doing and where you're going, even if you have to fake it. "Standing in the middle of the block looking confused -- or worse, unfolding a map -- calls you out as a tourist," notes Matthew Reames, who traveled extensively through Europe a few years ago. "[Instead], pop into a coffee shop or something like that to gi ... Read more »

Working your way round Australia

The gap year spent travelling around Australia is an increasingly popular rite of passage. Last year, the Australian government issued 113,936 working holiday visas, with nearly 30,000 of them going to British applicants. It's a big adventure, but doesn't have to be a complicated one. It's simply a case of knowing where to look.

The working holiday visa

The Working Holiday Visa allows holders to stay in Australia for up to a year, working for a maximum of six months with any one employer. During this 12-month period, holders may leave and enter the country as many times as they wish.

The visa must be applied for outside of Australia, and applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 30. Evidence of having sufficient funding for the trip is also required - a certified bank statement showing AU$5,000 ( 2,120) in your account and a return plane ticket. Exploring China can rattle even veteran travelers.

And understandably so.

It's a huge country with enough languages and dialects to leave even many native Chinese flummoxed at the thought of communicating away from home.

But traveling away from the big cities isn't scary, and it's not unmanageable.

Traveling for the past few years from my home base in Shanghai, I've picked up a lot of tips -- both from my own experiences and from others -- that make life on the road in China a little bit easier and a lot more rewarding.

Here are 20 of them to get you started.

1. Score extra beds the easy way

Chinese hotels aren't too fussy when it comes to matching the number of beds to the number of people, particularly when the extra bodies are children.

For families, this can save a lot of cash. Rather than needing two rooms, a family of four can get cozy in a twin room, where both be ... Read more »

20 Secret Bargains of London

There's just nothing in the world like my hometown - the architecture, the colorful street life, the even more colorful nightlife, the rainbow of eccentric and fairly friendly inhabitants, and better dining than at any time in its history (no cracks, please). Sadly, Cool Britannia has earned another nickname courtesy of our local tabloids: "Rip-off Britain." But the truth is that especially away from the touristy downtown areas, London doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg. If you aren't afraid to take the bus, the train, the tube, or to arm yourself with a street map and walk, you can dig up some brilliant bargains in exciting places. (To call London from the United States, first dial 011-44-20. From within the U.K. first dial 020 for London; for other cities, dial 0 before the city code.)

Road Trip America

We used to be a fairly normal family. My husband Jared and I worked and lived in a Central Florida suburb with our two kids, Devin and Emma. And then one day I got a crazy idea: I wanted to take an epic road trip across America with my family.

Why road trip America?

My life was good. I was traveling frequently as a freelance writer and enjoying a salary from an extremely flexible marketing job. Jared and I were getting a long better than ever (thanks to a lot of marriage counseling ), and we were comfortable financially. But I wanted more for us. I wanted to be able to spend my good life with the people who meant the most to me, the people who were spending most of their life in school and at work. Extended travel seemed lik ... Read more »

Shatner partnered with motorcycle builder American Wrench to create the Rivet motorcycle. The Aurora, Illinois -based company said the silver studded bike is inspired by the B-17 bomber.

    WORK AND TRAVEL Australia

    New Zealand

New Zealand only realy has two speeds - maxin chillaxin or full-throttle, rubber-burning fast. It s what makes the country so diverse, in terms of landscape and population. If you find yourself in front of a lovely mountain (which you will at some point) you could stand at the bottom with your picnic, taking in the scenenry and breathing in the air or grab your wingsuit and jump right off the top of that mother. And both are completely normal in NZ, that s its quirk.

    Take A Bite

Its not all Witchetty grubs and Kangaroo steaks over in Aus. By all means, dig in if either of those take your fancy but there are plenty of other sweet and savoury treats that the Aussies lay claim to. You may wish to try a delicious Anzac biscuit, traditionally made by wives who sent them to their solder husbands fighting in World War 1. We love a cookie with a romantic history. ... Read more »

How Do Travel Agents Fare on Social Media?

It’s coming to that time of year when we all start daydreaming about summer holidays to far flung destinations.

But the recession has had a huge impact on travel bookings; in 2011, there were nearly 9 million fewer overseas holidays taken than in 2008 (by people in the UK), according to Mintel. The market has remained stagnant, but online booking processes continue to improve; just under two thirds of overseas holidays taken by UK consumers are booked online .

The internet allows consumers to research their holidays in more depth than ever before, opening up resorts and travel agents to closer scrutiny. Holiday review sites are popular and can be a powerful influence on travel agent take up – both bad and good.

    #book airline tickets online #

For domestic flights in the US, the cheapest price is almost always on the airline's website. Additionally, airlines sometimes include other benefits like additional frequent flyer miles, reduced baggage fees etc. for booking directly through their site.

Online travel agents such as Expedia, Travelocity, Orbitz etc. can sometimes find flight combinations that you cannot book directly through a single airline. This can be useful when there is no single airline (or airline alliance) that serves your route. This is not common for domestic trips, but can happen sometimes for international flights between more minor destinations.

There is also the convenience of using a single site with all your information already stored instead of having to navigate a different a airline site every time you make a reservation. This can be especially useful for foreign airline websites which are sometimes more difficult to use and can be troublesome with forei ... Read more »

How does a person become a licensed IATA travel agent?

    Full Answer

The first step in becoming a successful independent travel agent is to attend travel school to learn about the travel and tourism industry. Hcareers notes that travel school isn't mandatory, but it teaches aspiring agents about popular destinations and helps them develop skills in planning and booking travel.

Following classroom training, many independent agents apply to the International Air Transport Association for certification as accredited travel agents, according to Hcareers. New agents should also develop personal travel experience. This experience helps agents decide on which types of travel they'd like to focus their efforts. According to About.com, developing a niche is an important factor in the growth of an independent travel agent's business.

When should I buy my travel insurance?

When to buy travel insurance? As soon as you make a trip deposit.

While you can buy travel insurance right up until the day before you leave on a trip, it’s important to understand what constitutes the initial trip deposit date.

Once a traveler makes their first arrangement for a trip, that date becomes the initial trip deposit date .

Many travel insurance coverages require you to purchase your plan within a specified number of days (usually 10-14) of making that initial trip deposit if the coverage is to be in effect.

In fact, buying travel insurance as soon as possible is essential in avoiding some common insurance loopholes .

Whatever You Do, Don't Buy an Airline Ticket On …

    Scott McCartney

    Updated Jan. 27, 2011 12:01 a.m. ET

Shoppers looking for the cheapest airfare can learn something from stand-up comedians: It's all about timing.

Ticket prices are highest on weekends, on average, according to online travel agencies, fare trackers and airline pricing executives.

When's the best time to buy? Travel experts have long said Tuesday is when sales are most often in place, which is true. An analysis of domestic fares shows that Wednesday also has good—and occasionally better—ticket prices.

Though prices fluctuate frequently and the ups and downs of airline prices can frustrate and anger consumers, airline pricing actually does follow a cycle during the week. Many sales, in which some seats are discounted by 15% to 25% typically, are launched Monday night. That was true again this week when AirTran Airways launched a sale to all its destination ... #essential travel #

    When is travel considered 'essential'?

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has advised to holidaymakers to avoid making uncessary trips to parts of Egypt. But many travellers may be surprised to find out that a holiday does not fall into the catergory of "non-essential travel" not to the travel insurance industry at least.

    5:15PM GMT 03 Feb 2011

    Comments

The FCO does not have a clear definition for essential and non-essential travel, simply stating that it is down to the individual to determine in their own mind whether the journey is required. The FCO will not cite specific examples, such as if a trip to visit a seriously ill relative or someone going on a holiday is considered more essential than the other.

As the definition is in limbo and common sense would need to apply ... Read more »

    RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL WIKI

While marketing campaigns have long touted 'destinations' -- travelers are simply entering a place that is someone else's home.

If those working in the tourist trade embrace the values we wish developed, then we can make a huge leap forward. The trick lies in listening to locals and visitors to create the opportunites that connect top-down and grassroots efforts. Travel agents, travel providers and travelers are the principal players.

Here's my thought: responsible tourism is treating others the way they wish to be treated. This is a variation on the Platinum Rule. it's also common sense and good manners.

A growing number of travelers want their journeys to be less invasive and more beneficial to the local community. They want to better understand the culture of the people they meet in the places they visit. Visitors should be mindful that we are entering a place that is someone else's ... Read more »

Watch: Full-size Silverstone racetrack recreated on frozen Arctic lake

Polar explorer Ben Saunders has driven a lap around the world famous Silverstone race circuit.

Instead, the inch-perfect replica of one of the home of the British Grand Prix was carved into the ice of a frozen lake in the Arctic, where nighttime temperatures can drop to minus 42 degrees Celsius.

Saunders, the youngest explorer to reach the North Pole alone and on foot, took to the wheel of a British-built Range Rover Sport SVR at Lake Udjaur in Swedish Lapland to navigate the iconic Surrey track with the help of Finland rally champion Minna Sillankorva.

Amazingly, there are two exact replicas of Silverstone race track at the centre, as well as replicas of Germany's fearsome Nurburgring and Le Castellet circuit in France. The tracks are painstakingly carved into the ice each winter for ice driving holidays and testing in extreme conditions.

What does Thailand's political situation mean for travellers?

by Austin Bush Nov 20 2014

On 22 May 2014, Thailand’s military seized control of the government in a self-professed effort to 'reform the political structure, the economy and the society.' Nearly six months on, the junta continues to rule Thailand, having formed a military-heavy national legislature headed by Prayuth Chan-ocha, himself the former Commander in Chief of the Royal Thai Army.

Coups are nothing new in Thailand – this is the country’s 12th since 1932 – but the current situation has understandably left travellers with a few questions.

    Shorter getaways mean more vacations.

While many people dream of spending weeks on sun-drenched tropical beaches, a growing number of families or couples are recognizing the advantages of vacation or holiday fun in shorter doses.

Two-income households with a gaggle of kids in tow especially have little time to plan, budget and organize a long trip.

So it's no surprise that weekend getaway trips are catching on across the country.

In times of economic hardship, it's especially important for families to budget travel expenses without giving up the fun and adventure that a full-tilt vacation may provide.

Short getaways or long weekend trips include much less planning and, of course, the chance to get out of town at a moment's notice.
