#52 Places to Go in 2014 - The New York Times

A place to meditate on freedom, and the creative life that followed.

When Nelson Mandela was incarcerated at Robben Island prison, he found inspiration in Cape Town. “We often looked across Table Bay at the magnificent silhouette of Table Mountain,” he said in a speech. “To us on Robben Island, Table Mountain was a beacon of hope. It represented the mainland to which we knew we would one day return.”

Cape Town’s importance to Mandela, who made his first address there as a free man, will doubtless draw many visitors in the wake of his death. The country has transformed itself since Mandela’s imprisonment, but there’s still much to be done. Many in Cape Town have been grappling with that challenge, including its creative class, which has been examining whether inspired design can solve some of the issues stemming from years of inequality.

The city formally takes up that issue this year during its turn as World Desig ... Read more »

#Indonesia Luxury Travel

See All Itineraries

Indonesia, the world s fourth most populous country and one of the most culturally diverse, is sprawled across more than 17,000 islands with over 300 different ethnicities and dialects. The people, most of whom are moderate Muslims, range from modern urban professionals in Jakarta, to village farmers and fishermen on many of the islands, to Stone Age tribal people in West Papua and peaceful, tourist-friendly Hindus of Bali. A former Dutch colony that became independent in the wake of World War II, Indonesia is a land of rich cultural and religious heritage, fascinating architecture, superb beaches and diving, unique wildlife, and remote village life.

Dutch sailors spoke of other-worldly creatures here such as the Komodo dragons of Komodo Island. From the orangutans of Borneo to the manta rays in the Gili Islands, Indonesia teems with a spectacular array of flora and fauna, like no other country on Earth. The landscape is ... Read more »

#London Travel Guide and Travel Information

Weather in London

London s mix of grandeur, history, style and culture gets more enticing by the year. There s charm in the Royal parks, world-class art galleries and wood-clad pubs. There s intrigue in its ancient streets and majestic architecture. And there s the excitement of its neon-lit West End, around which revolves an innovative dining scene and designer shopping outlets.

Aside from its icons from black cabs and red double-decker buses to the soaring spires of Westminster the English capital s museums are one of its most memorable features. Whether it s the earthly wonders housed inside the ornate, terracotta fa ade of the Natural History Museum or the cutting-edge artists pushing boundaries inside the Tate Modern, London s cultural attractions are stunning and often free.

#Jordaan travel guide

Understand [ edit ]

Statues of Tante Leen and Manke Nelis at the corner of Elandsgracht

The Jordaan was built in the 19th century as a working class neighborhood. All the streets and canals were oddly connected to the Prinsengracht, reflecting the haphazard development unlike the planned approach in the wealthier neighborhoods. To save costs the smaller ponds and waterways were linked up to form an array of canals. Fancier houses lined these canals. Homes of more limited means took up the side streets. Over time the Jordaan grew, becoming more dense with houses being built, filling in the inner gardens. The poorest families made do living in the cellars. By 1900 over 80.000 people called the area home. Since there was no sewer system, the canals were filled with foul-smelling effluents, posing serious risk to public health. As a result the early 20th century saw the filling in of half of the canals. In the 1930's the city put forth the plan to ... Read more »

#Patagonia Guide

An immense land of arid steppe, seemingly stretching into infinity, Patagonia is famed for its adventures and adventurers, for marvellous myths and fabulous facts. Its geographical immensity is paralleled only by the size of its reputation – which itself has taken on legendary proportions, thanks partly to writers such as Chatwin, Hudson and Theroux, as well as Charles Darwin. As a region of extremes, it has few equals in the world: from the biting winds that howl off the Southern Patagonian Icecap – the planet’s largest area of permanent ice away from the poles – to the hearthside warmth of old-time Patagonian hospitality; from the lowest point on the South American continent, the Gran Bajo de San Julián, to the savagely beautiful peaks of the Fitz Roy massif; from the mesmerizingly sterile plains along the coastline to the astoundingly rich marine fauna that thrives and breeds just offshore.

One of southern Argentina’s principal arteries, the RN-3< ... Read more »

#Laos Travel

Often overlooked in favour of its better-known neighbours, landlocked Laos remains one of Southeast Asia’s most beguiling destinations. Caught in the middle of the two Indochina wars and long isolated from the rest of the world, the country retains a slow, rather old-fashioned charm, and its people – incredibly laidback and friendly, even by Asian standards – are undoubtedly one of the highlights of any visit.

Laos’s lifeline is the Mekong River, which runs the length of the country, at times bisecting it and at others serving as a boundary with Thailand; the rugged Annamite Mountains historically have acted as a buffer against Vietnam, with which Laos shares its eastern border. Most people visit the country as part of a wider trip in the region, often entering from Thailand and following the Mekong further south. However, Laos alone rewards further exploration, and with a little more time it’s not hard to feel like you’re visiting places where few Westerners ve ... Read more »

#Luang Prabang Guide

Nestling in a slim valley shaped by lofty, green mountains and cut by the swift Mekong and Khan rivers, LUANG PRABANG exudes tranquillity and casual grandeur. A tiny mountain kingdom for more than a thousand years and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, Luang Prabang is endowed with a legacy of ancient red-roofed temples and French-Indochinese architecture, not to mention some of the country’s most refined cuisine, its richest culture and its most sacred Buddha image, the Pha Bang. For those familiar with Southeast Asia, the very name Luang Prabang conjures up the classic image of Laos – streets of ochre colonial houses and swaying palms, lines of saffron-robed monks gliding through the morning mist, the sonorous thump of the temple drums before dawn, and, of course, longtail boats racing down the Mekong before the river slips out of view through a seam in the mountains.

It is this heritage of Theravada Buddhist temples, Fre ... Read more »

#Let s travel to Tanzania, Africa with Morris Weintraub

Europe

East Africa – Ngorongoro Maasai.

by Morris Weintraub

The Ngorongoro Crater is a natural caldera with an 1,800 foot perfectly circular mountain rim that sits on the western edge of the Serengeti. Once a massive volcano, it now houses a fresh water lake that attracts every animal in the greater Serengeti ecosystem. Beyond the crater rim, stretching further than the eye can see, lies the Serengeti and the 60,000 Maasai who inhabit Ngorongoro National Park.

Imagine if you can, Yellowstone National Park inhabited by thousands of Native Americans, all living close to the way they did 200 years ago. Mud huts with thatched roofs dot the hillsides. Children milking cows and goats each morning before heading down dusty dirt roads to schools miles away. Ornately accessorized mothers and wives with elongated earlobes and brightly colored jewelry making tea by firelight inside their dimly lit hom ... Read more »

By Claire Goodswen, Lionbridge Solutions Architect

May 11, 2015

We all know the Chinese saying, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Wouldn’t it be nice if that journey ended at your hotel, restaurant, cruise, airline, rental agency or convention center?

You can make this happen – the Asian travel market is booming, and with the guidelines below, you can steer a good portion of this business to your doorstep.

1. Know the Numbers

To really understand what a game-changer Asian tourism is today, look at these data points:

  • 53% increase in the number of Asian outbound trips from 2009 to 2013, according to the World Travel Monitor® almost double the overall growth rate—and is expected to increase further

Our team of luxury travel specialists have spent almost three decades in the travel industry, and our knowledge of the world’s most inspiring places is unrivaled. We are experienced, opinionated, and discerning, and we believe that travel is one of life’s ultimate joys—it never fails to thrill us, expand our perspectives, or fill us with wonder and gratitude. We love exploring the world, and we know it intimately.

We’ve ridden motorcycles through Bangkok’s storied alleyways, paid our respects to Maasai warriors in Tanzania, danced through sunset and sunrise in Ipanema Beach, and sung as loud as we could as we crossed the Jordanian desert because the only other soul within miles was our camel, and we knew he’d never report just how terrible we sounded.
