#Where to go in Portugal

The south-facing coast of the Algarve is the country’s tourist epicentre and justifiably so – it is here that you’ll find the archetypal picturesque Portuguese cove beaches, fringed by rock stacks and gentle cliffs, and it doesn’t take much to escape the high-rise resorts and golf courses. If it is beaches you are after, however, you have almost the entire west coast of the country to choose from. There are expansive stretches of sand not only on the Algarve’s western coast, but also in the southern Alentejo, on the coast around Lisbon and north to Figueira da Foz, and along the Minho coast north to the Spanish border.

Many of these beaches extend as far as the eye can see, and are rarely busy even in high summer, but as they face the full power of the Atlantic, they can be dangerous for swimming. It’s no big surprise then that many attract serious surfers instead, with Peniche , Figueira da ... Read more »

#TOM BIHN Forums

Travel forums?

backpack said: 05-08-2015 08:52 AM

I think that the most important is to find a forum that is targeting one's travel interests.

There is a great one for Italian travel that a member is always referring to.

Another is for cruises.

Make sure that there are more post from genuine travellers than ads.

Be aware of postomercials (infomercials posts), many travel service providers have a less than stellar or even very tainted reputation.

In cyberspace, news travel fast. To counter any negative testimonies, people are paid to log in with different user names and write glowing review of the service in question. Lower budget operations, such as hotels have their staff write testimomy on rewiew sites.

I fell for one of those scams, when I stayed at the place, I was able to match the personality of each staff member I encountered with the style of each good review, needless to say, I took the adv ... Read more »

#The Adventure Gap

2C290" /%

A story for our times, inspiring all Americans to embrace their natural birthright in the great outdoors.

• Chronicles the first all-African-American summit attempt on Denali, the highest point in North America

• Part adventure story, part history, and part argument for the importance of inspiring future generations to value nature

The nation’s wild places——from national and state parks to national forests, preserves, and wilderness areas——belong to all Americans. But not all of us use these resources equally. Minority populations are much less likely to seek recreation, adventure, and solace in our wilderness spaces. It’s a difference that African American author James Mills addresses in his new book, The Adventure Gap: Changing the Face of the Outdoors.

Bridging the so-called “adventure gap” requires role models who can inspire the uninitiated to experience and e ... Read more »

#Taiwan - Lonely Planet

With its all-around adventure landscape, heritage-rich capital, diverse folk traditions and feted night market scene, Taiwan offers a continent-sized travel list for one green island.

The Tao of Today

Taiwan is heir to the entire Chinese tradition of Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism and that amorphous collection of deities and demons worshipped as folk faith. But over the centuries the people have blended their way into a unique and tolerant religious culture that's often as ritual heavy as Catholicism and as wild as Santeria.

Taiwanese temples (all 15,000) combine worship hall, festival venue and art house under one roof. Watch a plague boat burn at Donglong Temple, go on a pilgrimage with the Empress of Heaven, study a rooftop three-dimensional mosaic, and learn why a flag and ball have come to represent prayer.

#5 Things to Note When Choosing Your Travel Partner

Upon returning from Melbourne, my friend recounted to me over dinner how the long awaited graduation trip with her good friend turned out to be a letdown because of their extremely different travelling styles.

Such stories of disappointing holiday trips are not uncommon. Understanding that different people have different travelling styles and habits goes a long way in helping us to pick the right travel partners and ensuring our trips go as smoothly as possible.

#These are the tools you should be using to book travel

Technology has radically altered the landscape of travel planning in recent years, creating a profusion of websites, apps, and devices designed to book trips better—making it significantly more difficult to cut through the noise in the process. The solution is a carefully edited mix drawn from the hundreds of available services, which in combination can smooth out a potentially rocky odyssey into a seamless journey tailored for efficiency or pleasure.

When booking

Naturally, much of the innovation in this field is happening on a handheld scale. Silicon Valley companies are competing fiercely to crack the next killer smartphone or tablet app to find flights more cheaply and quickly. The new app Hopper sorts through the data behind billions of flights to tell you when to fly and when to book. Plug in your route, select “Watch a Trip” and you’ll receive push notifications when prices are expected ... Read more »

#10 Interesting and Helpful Travel Websites

September 15, 2014 / By NomadicMatt

Every day, a dozen new travel websites start up in hopes of making your trip planning easier, help you meet locals, crowdsource your advice, or save money. And with equal speed as many travel websites fail each day. A lot of travel start ups try to fill a void where none exists. There are just some things that people don’t want, need, or desire. There many are with innovative ideas but are poorly executed and end up floundering.

#3 travel review alternatives to TripAdvisor

TripAdvisor is the resident beast when it comes to user reviews in travel, of which the site claims over 200 million across the world. So that s a useful level of mainstream crowd-sourced feedback for hotels, attractions, and restaurants.

But what if you want tips from more expert, local, individually tailored recommendations for your next trip? Check out these three travel review alternatives to TripAdvisor.

TripExpert offers expert hotel reviews

TripExpert takes the contrarian view to hotel reviews: Experts actually do  know something worth sharing. The idea is that the travel expert s opinion matters more than that of the average traveler, who may present a more biased view.

Given that certain review sites have become repositories for complaints that likely would have been resolved by talking to a manager, the wisdom behind TripExpert is solid. The site saves users from wading ... Read more »

#10 Sites For The Best Airfare Deals

By Dani Fankhauser 2013-04-30 14:03:53 UTC

There's not much that can evoke thoughts of both work and play like buying airfare. You're either trying to find a last-minute ticket to make it in time for a meeting, or hoping to get to a remote island as cheaply as possible.

Some trips are regular, essential and planned far in advance, like visiting the family for Christmas; while other trips — spending time with that long-distance significant other — are flexible on dates, but can break your wallet if not purchased strategically.

For whatever your airfare needs may be, there is a growing corral of consumer portals for searching available flights and getting deals. Some make the experience less stress-inducing; others make it feel like a game. Search giants Google and Bing are both on the scene amongst scrappy startups with pithy names. No matter where you're going, the best flight at the best price is at your fingertips. ... Read more »

#UK Geocaching Travel Bugs and Geocoins UK Geocachers

A Travel Bug, or any item trackable on geocaching.com is a game piece. People purchase them and send them out in the hopes that they will continue to travel far and wide collecting stories and photos along the way.

There is never a need to trade anything when taking or leaving a TB/trackable. You should not take a cache trade item and leave a Trackable in it s place, since the trackable is not swag . If taking swag from a cache, you should trade up, trade even or don t trade at all. If taking a TB, log it as soon as possible, and always try to log in the logbook in the cache that you took it. (This way, if you do forget to log it, someone else can check the cache and find out where it went.)

They are identified by a number which may be engraved on them or on a tag attached to the item. Don t confuse trackables with normal swaps in a cache. You can t keep trackables always move them along if you can.
