Stay ca tion: A vacation spent in one s home country rather than abroad, or one spent at home and involving day trips to local attractions.

Referred to by New Yorkers as The Village , Greenwich Village is a geographic area in lower Manhattan that runs east to west from Broadway to West Street and north to south from 14th Street to W. Houston Street. The village is known for being home to NYU, numerous entertainment venues, great food, artistic types, expensive real estate, and some of Manhattan s most beautiful tree-lined streets.

I spend quite a bit of time in Greenwich Village and it is hands down one of my favorite neighborhoods in all of New York City. I wanted to see what it would be like to be a resident of Greenwich Village for a day, so I decided to do a staycation in the neighborhood to get a taste of what it might be like to reside in the area.

Part I Chapters I-III

Summary

Chapter I

Gulliver summarizes the story of his life before the main plot begins with his arrival in the country of Lilliput. He is the third of five sons of the owner of an estate in Nottinghamshire, England. He is educated at Cambridge University and serves an apprenticeship with a surgeon. After marrying a woman called Mary Burton, he takes up a post as surgeon aboard a ship traveling to the South Seas. On the way to the East Indies, the ship is blown onto rocks and wrecked. Gulliver manages to swim to land and falls asleep from exhaustion. When he awakes, he finds that he is tied to the ground and surrounded by tiny human beings of six inches high. He tries to escape his bonds, but they fire arrows at him, causing him pain. One makes a speech in a language he does not understand. He signals that he is hungry, and the little people feed him with bask ... Read more »

7 Wonders of the World in 13 Days

Credit: Megan Sullivan

This gear list is organized from light to heavy travel and includes both domestic and international travel checklists. Start with Packing Light which we define as packing a bag small enough that it fits under the seat in front of you. If going abroad, add in items from the International Travel Checklist. If you need more space, read Traveling with Just a Carry-On.

This is everything OutdoorGearLab co-founder Chris McNamara took on a trip around the world in 13 day s to visit the 7 Wonders of the World. The bag weighed only six pounds and was plenty as long as you do laundry in your hotel sink every once in a while .

  • Backpack Take a pack smaller than 30 liters so it will fit under the seat in front of you. This insures that, if overhead space is taken, you won't have to check in your bag. A top loading pack is ideal because it lets you cram in extra items. We li ... Read more »

This is a guest post by Wendy S. Goffe , a trusts and estates lawyer with Stoel Rives in Seattle . You can follow her on Twitter .

As Spring break approaches, some travelers are scouring the Internet for one last ski trip or a warm weather getaway to replenish vitamin D levels. I am on Maui, attending an estate planning conference held at the 5-star Grand Wailea, part of the Waldorf Astoria chain.

Room rates here begin at almost $500 a night, and for a view of something other than the parking lot, accommodations get substantially more expensive. Professional meetings tend to be designed for attendees with generous expense accounts and leisure time. Since I have neither, I am economizing by doubling up in a $440 per night room with my friend Karen Boxx. a professor at University of Washington School of Law.

By rooming together, we figured we could save enough money to ensure that we have s ... Read more »

As much as I would love to imagine myself as a stalwart and courageous swashbuckling voyager, sailing the seven seas with magnanimous adventures of legendary renown, I am in fact a scrawny, spindly creature of skeletal countenance and atrocious constitution. Without the technological marvels of high-quality travel gear, I would have devolved into a rapidly decaying husk of a man amongst the snowbanks of an obscurely bucolic countryside long ago.

Merino wool: Saving toes from amputation since 12,000 BC. Or so.

Luckily for you, my frozen toes and irreversibly chilled bones instilled within me the steely resolve to persevere, and thus did I begin my long and arduous journey to discover nothing but the world s finest garments, wrought from the hands of humanity s most skilled craftsmen, never to be caught in a meteorological maelstrom of biblical proportions with inadequate gear ever again.

And it is this wisdom which I choose to bestow upon you today. I have suf ... Read more »

Compared with other cities in the western US, Las Vegas is a relatively recent arrival. It was founded in 1905, and for many years it was merely a small settlement in the middle of the desert. However, several pivotal events would come together in less than twenty years that would help Las Vegas grow into what it is today:

Welcome!

Southern Californians crowd Interstate 15 every weekend going back and forth to Vegas. Expect this drive to be crowded and frustrating, unless you can come and go at off-peak hours. However, many find the 280 mile (450 km) drive along I-15 restful and scenic. Attractions along the I-15 include the California towns of Barstow and Baker ; the Mojave Desert ; and small hotel-casinos in Nevada at Primm (at the California border) and Jean, respectively. Those who traverse the I-15 should remember that they are crossing a desert, and should carry (and drink) ample amounts of water, especially on hot summer days where temperatures can reach 110°F ... Italy s vast and growing network of train tracks and the generally low price for train travel means that getting around Italy by train is almost always going to be your best bet. It s fast and efficient barring Italy s sporadic but all-too-regular train strikes and even most smallish towns seem to have a train station.

There are, however, times when getting around Italy by bus is the better (or only) alternative, even if you re not straying too far from the beaten path. One of the places where it s easier and faster to use the bus is Siena especially if you re going from Florence to Siena. but almost no matter where you re traveling from. There are other places in Italy, too, that either don t have a train station or where bus connections are more plentiful, so planning on a few bus trips isn t a bad idea when you re in Italy.

Unfortunately, there s no national bus network in Italy the way there s a national train network so figu ... Read more »

Australia is a land of savage beauty, big adventure and even bigger horizons. There are good reasons why it finds itself touted as one of the ultimate travel getaways; it has personality in spades, landscapes to die for and more than its fair share of sunshine. And if beaches, rainforest and outback aren t your thing, then its major cities are outstanding destinations in their own right.

In many ways the country breeds extremes. The fiery atmosphere of an Aussie Rules match in Melbourne and the champagne glitz of Sydney Harbour belong to another planet entirely when compared to the quiet expanse of the Red Centre or the surf-bashed coastlines of the west.

Likewise, 40,000 years of Aboriginal culture sometimes seem an unnatural bedfellow for the famed no worries mate BBQ lifestyle of modern times. When taken as a whole, however, the sum of Australia s contrasts make it a destination that is as fascinating as it is diverse.

Knowing where to go is arguably the t ... Read more »

Officially the highest country on Earth, lofty Nepal is commonly referred to as the “roof of the world.” That seems like a fitting moniker for this Himalayan nation, where soaring, snow-capped mountains disappear into the clouds like stairways to heaven.

Mount Everest is, of course, the star attraction. Tourists come in their droves to climb, hike and admire the world’s tallest peak, which flirts with the stratosphere at 8,848m (29,029ft).

However, this charming country is much more than just mountains. The birthplace of Gautama Buddha, Nepal is an important pilgrimage site for millions of Buddhists, who come from far and wide to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lumbini, a temple complex where Buddha once lived.

Temples are ubiquitous in Nepal, but not just the Buddhist variety; Hinduism has a strong foothold in the country and there are many Hindu temples scattered across the country.

If spirituality doesn’t arouse your interest, the Nepali ca ... Read more »

European and World Backpacking

TWO HUNDRED YEARS ago the cost was seven years to a lifetime of servitude for average people making a one-way crossing of the Atlantic. Now it can be funded by a few days of waiting tables.

When booking through an agent, always specify you want the lowest possible fare, as there may be specials which do not fall under economy or APEX. Moreover, not every agent--even with the budget specialists listed below--will be equally competent or motivated to find the cheapest ticket. They may not know about a great deal the next cubicle has been selling all week, or the commission may not merit bothering much.

Likewise, buying a ticket on the Internet is not the same as getting the cheapest price. As with any travel agent, you may be offered the lowest price, an average price, or a test price. You still have to make comparisons and move boldly when a deal presents itself. A good strategy is to book the best-value, fully-refundable fare ea ... Read more »

It s easy to get carried away with customer reviews on the world wide web. I m one of the worst culprits; I pore incessantly over reviews before I commit to anything. And although conducting these silent surveys is oddly empowering, they become debilitating as you find conflicting opinions .

So, I ll do something a little different. Rather than post reviews based on personal opinions, I want to look at Intrepid Travel and Gap Adventures from an objective perspective. For example, who travels where. what type of travel does each specialise in, what are the typical trip lengths. how do costs compare, etc.

History - In 1988, Darrell Wade and Geoff Manchester traveled with a group of friends across the Sahara in a converted tipper truck. It was during this trip that the two university friends developed the idea for a style of travel that would take small groups of people ... Read more »

The Money Team consists of Helen. Eesha and Lesley and they have worked together to write and update this guide. Martin oversees the process with this guide.

Money Checklist

When looking for cheap flight tickets, timing's crucial:

Unlike package holidays, book flights early. Business folk will pay top dollar at the last minute, so airlines hike prices.

Whenever you need to travel, the internet's a powerhouse for super-speedily finding the cheapest flights. Before you start scouring for deals, here are the key facts you need to know.

The internet's great for flights or DIY city breaks. But if you're going away specifically for seven, 10 or 14 days to a traditional holiday destination, package holidays, where everything's wrapped up in one, are often best. See the Cheap Package Holiday guide.

What's more, most package operators are ATOL-protected (though always check before you book). So if the company goes bust or something g ... Read more »

There are few things as alluring as the promise of free travel to exotic destinations. The banks know this, and have long offered travel rewards to their customers for using their credit cards. In turn, savvy credit card users maximize their rewards to travel in comfort and style well beyond their means. (See also: How Travel Rewards Credit Cards Really Work )

I told him that my family and I could not possibly have paid for our three $7,000 tickets for this flight. But thanks to my travel rewards credit cards, my journey was all but free after some taxes and fees. The majority of airlines across the world offer Electronic Tickets or e-tickets. One of the major advantages of an eticket is that it does not require a paper ticket/record as a confirmation of your flight since that is held by the airline's computerized ticketing system in an electronic format.

An e-ticket means you need not carry a paper ticket while travelling and hence there is no fear of losing it. Since it exists in electronic format, you do not have ... Read more »

Is Indonesia an easy country to travel in?

In general, it is. The country is very cheap, its people are exceptionally friendly, the transport options are plentiful (if a little slow) and limited English is widely spoken. Unsurprisingly, travel is easiest in the most visited areas of Bali, Lombok and, to an extent, in Java. In Bali almost everybody speaks a fair amount of English and travel is the easiest in the archipelago. At the opposite end of the scale, travelling in the more remote parts of the country, such as Maluku and Papua, is significantly more difficult, but potentially more rewarding for the seasoned traveler.

Is it safe? What about for women?

In the main, Indonesia is a safe country. Although violent crime is rare, in some of the tourist areas pickpocketing and small scale scams are a fairly common occurrence. If you use your common sense and keep an eye on your belongings when in crowds you should avoid any of these problems. Plenty of women tr ... Read more »
