Africa is a huge and diverse continent, so travel "must haves" vary from country to country. (Photo: africa image by Luka76 from Fotolia )

Planning for travel to any of the wide variety of destinations in Africa need not be any more complicated than for any other destination. There are, however, a number of must haves that will aid you with preparation for your trip, and furthermore upon arrival. Some facilitate a smooth travel experience; others are essential for your personal health and safety.

The Internet and up-to-date guidebooks for your specific destination are invaluable when it comes to planning travel to Africa. Visit the US Department of State s travel site, travel.state.gov, and read current international travel warnings for your destination, if there are any. Stay on that site to find country-specific information for more about the country s tourism industry and infrastructure, and whether any particular regions of the country should be avoided.

Recently Exodus Travels invited me to take an 8 day cruise with them through the Galapagos. It is a bucket list trip for many people. The Galapagos is one of the few places on earth where you can see animals roaming in the wild, unafraid of their spectators. From island to island you can see what Darwin experienced that inspired The Origin of a Species.

Crown amongst thousands of fish. Then visit the lagoon at Punta Cormorant with flamingos and Post Office Bay, the mailbox used by 18th Century whalers.

Cruise Day 6

To Dragon Hill, a nesting site for land iguanas with a large lagoon; dramatic Sullivan Bay with a walk on a huge lava flow only 100 years old before swimming from the white-sand beach in crystal clear waters.

Cruise Day 7

Less-visited Genovesa (also called Tower) Island is home to an abundance of red-footed boobies, fur seals, storm petrels and Short-eared Owls. Here, look for tropicbirds at Prince Philip Steps before ... Read more »

In spite of political, financial and social turmoil, Egyptians remain proud and defiant and are as welcoming as ever to visitors to their land.

The old saying that Egypt is the gift of the Nile still rings true: without the river there would be no fertile land, no food, no electricity. And although people's lives are increasingly physically detached from the water, the Nile still exerts a uniquely powerful role. Luckily for visitors, the river is also the perfect place from which to see many of the most spectacular ancient monuments, which is one reason why a Nile cruise remains such a popular way to travel.

Whether you’re watching the sun rise from the lofty heights of Mt Sinai (Gebel Musa) or the shimmering horizon from the comfort of a hot spring in Siwa Oasis. Egypt’s desert landscapes are endlessly fascinating – good thing, because they make up 95% of the country. In a land where time is measured by dynasties, and distance by the setting sun, there are plenty of ... Read more »

Graco knows that great parenting means focusing more on baby and not on folding a darn stroller.

The FastAction has all the travel system essentials – a stroller, a detachable carseat, and a base. But as the name suggests, the Graco FastAction Click Connect’s main highlight is its quick and effort-free folding procedure. All you really have to do is pull the red strap in the stroller seat and voila the stroller is folded and ready to be stashed away! A lot of moms and dads love this feature because they can fold the stroller in one hand, letting their other hand hold and comfort their baby.

We’d love to have some bicycle wheels under this stroller, but that’s new model altogether. Still, the FastAction passes SPEMS with flying colours, with remarkable marks in maneuverability and safety. The Click Connect 30 is a mid-price travel system that costs a reasonable $189. Learn more about the FastAction Click Connect 30 .

Iceland . (Icelandic: Island ) is a mountainous island nation in the north Atlantic Ocean, located between Europe and North America. Though not part of the continental mainland, the country is considered Nordic European. The name of the country—Iceland—may not be that appropriate: although 10% of Iceland is covered by glaciers, it has a surprisingly mild climate and countless geothermal hot-spots. The native spelling ("Island") is appropriate in English as well.

Iceland is a stunningly beautiful place if you enjoy strange and desolate landscapes. Because it is so close to the Arctic Circle, the amount of daylight varies dramatically by season. The sun sets briefly each night in June, but it doesn't get fully dark before it comes back up again. In the March and September equinoxes, days and nights are of about equal length, as elsewhere in the world. If you go in December, it's almost 20 hours of darkness. Summer is definitely the best time to go, and even then ... Read more »

No one is ever going to claim that travel in Europe is cheap. Between taxes, higher prices and exchange rates, you could easily spend more than the cost of your ticket in a week just on housing, local transportation and food. This expense definitely does not have to be the case. With a lot of planning and some practical ideas, you can travel in Europe on a tight budget and explore the continent without breaking the bank.

A travel buddy can make vacationing a lot less lonely and a lot more fun. (Photo: young couple at beach image by Accent from Fotolia )

Single people who like to travel sometimes feel scared or anxious to do so alone. Other times, one half of a married couple might have the travel bug but the other is a homebody. Still others enjoy the thrill of traveling with a new friend or meeting a relative stranger who will serve as a travel guide in an unfamiliar or exotic location. Finding a travel buddy with whom you connect takes a bit of gumption, a bit of courage and a bit of old-fashioned homework.

Step 1

Go to websites such as TravBuddy, TravelFriend or TravelersMeeting. On most travel buddy websites, you'll register and then create a user name, password and profile. From there you can explore domestic and international destinations, find travelers with similar interests and passions and contact them via email.

Step 2

Tower Bridge at night, bridging the River Thames.

The name London originally referred only to the once-walled "Square Mile" of the original Roman (and later medieval) city (confusingly called the "City of London " or just "The City"). Today, London has taken on a much larger meaning to include all of the vast central parts of the modern metropolis, with the city having absorbed numerous surrounding towns and villages over the centuries, including large portions of the surrounding "home counties", one of which - Middlesex - being completely consumed by the growing metropolis. The term "Central London" is widely used on both signs and by the media to decribe the downtown area of the city, which encompasses The City, most of the City of Westminster, and some of the surrounding boroughs. The term "Greater London" embraces Central London together with all the outlying suburbs that lie in one continuous urban sprawl within the lower Thames valley. Though densely populated by New W ...
