Travel Guides are a Godsend and a tremendous amount of research has gone into them, but they can be a little patronising at times.

Don't cling to them religiously, as many travellers do. They are not the bibles that they are made out to be, and are often out of date before they are published.

To get the most out of guidebooks, use them sparingly for basic orientation, then discover the towns and cities on your own.

The information on museums and places of interest are great when all other signs look foreign.

But when it comes to hotels and restaurants, every one to their own taste and budget. Believe me, the gems are never in black and white for all to see. If word gets out, the bargains rise in price with popularity and the 'recommended' places are usually full of foreigners - us, the tourists.

Wandering around on your own, you will be delighted when you discover reasonably-priced, quality rooms and gourmet restaurants dishing up a local ambi ... Read more »

After 37 great years in business, we ve closed our store and are no longer accepting new orders here.

Le Travel Store in the Gaslamp Quarter was located across from Horton Plaza at 745 Fourth Avenue six blocks north of the San Diego Convention Center and Petco Park, home of our San Diego Padres. The Gaslamp Quarter is one of the most lively neighborhoods in the US, packed with restaurants, clubs and stores.

We were located in the historic Labor Temple Building. constructed in 1907. In the 1920 s it housed a machine shop and a labor union hall, serving the workers from nearby theaters including the Balboa, Spreckles and California. In the 1930 s, it was home to the County Health Department. Le TRAVEL STORE settled here in December 1994. We exposed the original brick by pounding off a thick layer of plaster. We left the rough-cut joists exposed above real two-bys . You could see the original electrical system.

In the summer of 1985, we took a l ... Read more »

The benefits of a European travel package…

  • You buy your airline ticket, accommodations and some other travel services at a much lower price than if you bought them separately …it’s that simple!
  • Even if you prefer independent travel, you can talk with a local host for a few hours each day to answer your questions and make suggestions for sightseeing, restaurants and general tips…all geared for a hassle-free vacation .
  • Most European travel packages you buy are for the major cities in Europe…London, Paris, Rome and Amsterdam.

They last one or two weeks or shorter…in winter even long weekend trips from North America to Europe are popular at hard-to-beat prices.

  • At times, they will include intra-European rail transportation if you’re buying a London & Paris package or Rome, Florence and Venice.
  • Who operates these vacations and where you can book them…

Imagine that your bags are packed for the getaway of your dreams. You've rearranged your schedule, canceled meetings and lost hours of sleep planning every detail of it. You arrive at the airport two hours early, proceed through security, almost unable to contain your vacation excitement. Then disaster strikes, in flashing letters on the arrival/departure screens: FLIGHT DELAYED. Or, even worse: FLIGHT CANCELED.

Inclement weather can affect air travel in any season, even on the clearest of days. Whether it's high winds, rain, sleet or snow, each year brings a slew of delays that could severely cramp your travel plans. With some simple planning you can alleviate the frustration of last-minute itinerary changes and flight delays or cancellations so that a bad start (and bad weather) doesn't ruin your trip.

Get Forecasts as Soon as Possible

Before you leave for travel of any kind, it's always a good idea to check the forecasts for your departure and destination ... Read more »

I m a big fan of independent travel. There s nothing quite like the feeling of conquering the bus system in an unfamiliar city, or negotiating your way from one attraction to another without a guide. I ve been lucky to have had some pretty amazing vacation experiences in my life, and usually I ve felt like I had enough planning time prior to the trip to be prepared. Sometimes, however, there s just no time to do all the research necessary.

At that point, you essentially have two options you can either just go and wing it (plenty of people do this all the time and wouldn t have it any other way), or you can book a package trip and leave the planning to someone else. If you re leaning more toward not going at all, then I highly recommend that second option.

In this article, I m going to talk a little bit about the merits of booking a package trip, and some things you want to think about beforehand to make sure it s the right trip for you. Since this is an Italy travel ... Read more »

It's always important to take care of your health, but there are additional concerns to keep in mind when you're traveling.

Whether you're taking a quick trip with your family or studying abroad for several months, it's easier to get sick when you're in a new place because your body hasn't had a chance to adjust to the food, water, and air in a new environment. Traveling can bring you in contact with things that your body isn't used to.

Here are some tips on keeping your travel experience as healthy as possible.

The stress and excitement of travel can make you more likely to get sick, but if you follow a few simple tips, you're more likely to stay healthy throughout your trip and your trip will definitely be more enjoyable. The good news is that as a teen, your immune system is as strong as an adult's, but lack of sleep and a poor diet can make it easier for you to become sick.

The first thing you should do if you're heading overseas is to find out wh ... Read more »

I have probably written it thousands of times on my websites and in e-mails that the best way to book your holiday in Greece is through a reliable Greek travel agency. The main reason is because of the islands and the ferry connections which makes coordinating itineraries a difficult job for people who don't know the system. People have e-mailed me after booking their hotels because they could not find the ferries to get them to the hotels they had booked. Even with ferry schedules now on the internet there are problems. The schedules can be changed at any time, boats can be canceled due to weather, mechanical failure, strikes or at the whim of a ferry company (for example if the boat is not 3/4 full they lose money so they cancel the trip by saying the boat is broken.) A Greek travel agency can change your arrangements without a penalty and will make sure your trip goes smoothly. This is particularly useful in the event of a strike since these are not spontaneous uprisings but sche ... Read more »
