A great trick I have been able to do is go through Vacations to Go through their independent travel. This is usually a packaged flight and few nights. I have always been able to change my return flight beyond their dates as they make these flights regularly. I have done this for two months with an 8 day/5 night trip to Sydney and another time a 3 night London trip turned into a two month travel around the area before getting on the extended return flight home. I have never had to pay extra for having a later date.

I began my solo travel with a group and then extending my stay. Getting familiar with the layout, language, money, etc. was all helpful. I have traveled extensively and after living abroad for the last couple of years am back in the States to regroup.

I would not hesitate to used Craigslist or Gumtree to rent a home or studio apartment anywhere. Abroad, people are very helpful and friendly. I want to experience the culture and not be a tourist.

You may want to look for groups on fb as well. Bali is a great friendly, easy place to experience travel alone as a woman as well. Australia and New Zealand are also really safe beginning spots as well.

Just get your feet wet, keep doing your research, ask the locals once you are somewhere. Have a hotel those first few nights while you get your bearings. Attend workshops abroad and then extend your stay - your hosts will be able to guide you. oh, the things you can do.
