Do I need travel insurance for a short trip?Yes, it's important to have travel insurance for every trip you take, even a short, single trip to the UK or Europe. Not being covered when you travel means you are exposing yourself to large bills if anything goes wrong or you fall ill while you are away from home. If you're only planning one holiday in a year, single trip holiday insurance is the best value option. We can also provide you with great value long-stay cover for trips of between three and 18 months, or an annual policy if you're planning more than one trip in a year. All of our travel insurance policies include repatriation, medical emergency and baggage cover as standard. Pre-existing medical conditionsStaysure Single Trip travel insurance policies cover many pre-existing medical conditions free of charge. Other conditions can be added via medical screening by answering a few questions online, or through our UK contact centre which is open seven days a week. It's very important that all pre-existing conditions are declared on your policy at the time of purchase. This will avoid large medical bills if you need treatment in another country. Travel tipsYou should have medical cover wherever you're travelling, but it's especially important if you're visiting a country with no state health service, such as the USA. If you don't have medical cover and fall ill while you're in the States you'll be responsible for all of your medical bills. Without insurance, the cost of a lengthy hospital stay and an air ambulance back to the UK could run to tens of thousands of pounds. If you're travelling to Europe, it is a good idea to apply for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which gives you free or reduced-cost medical care in all European Economic Area countries. This includes all EU countries, as well as Iceland, Norway, Lichtenstein and Switzerland. In essence you can expect the same level of cover as a citizen of that country, but it's important to note that each country's health system is different and might not include everything that you get back home for free. To cover all eventualities, the NHS recommends that you use your EHIC card in addition to adequate travel insurance. Find out more about which countries are covered by the EHIC and what it entitles you on the NHS Choices website . The Foreign and Commonwealth Office website provides in-depth advice on travelling to every country in the world and is updated regularly. Here you can find the latest safety and security announcements for your destination, along with entry requirements, vaccinations, currency information and local laws and customs. It is a good idea that you check this before you travel. For more general travel advice, check out the NHS Fit For Travel website. You can find information on a wide range of topics, including food and water abroad, sun exposure, travelling with medical complaints, travelling in remote areas, first aid, as well as how to be a responsible traveller. *Terms and Conditions apply. There is no upper age limit for single trip policies unless you are travelling to the United States of America, Canada, the islands of the Caribbean, Bermuda, Mexico, Thailand, China or Hong Kong, where you must be 85 or under at the time of purchasing your policy.
