Traveling from Cusco through the Urubamba Valley to Machu Picchu is a journey that emanates ancient history from start to finish. It's here that active adventurers can step back in time and literally walk in the footsteps of the Inca. REI's 7-day itinerary provides a fantastic opportunity to see the best of this region of Peru. We start with a guided tour of Cusco, South America's oldest continually inhabited city, where much of the city's long history is still visible in its buildings and streets. In the Sacred Valley of the Incas, we visit a traditional Quechua market, hike through spectacular terraced salt mines, and trek to the fascinating Pisac ruins. Arriving at Machu Picchu itself, we have three days to revel in this immense and magical complex. Our expert, local guides lead us on a tour of the site, and we also have time to explore on our own—with options for more hiking to the Temple of the Moon and/or the summit of Huayna Picchu.
