# U.S. Relations With Thailand
More information about Thailand is available on the Thailand Page and from other Department of State publications and other sources listed at the end of this fact sheet.
U.S.-THAILAND RELATIONS
The United States and Thailand established relations in 1832 and signed a Treaty of Amity and Commerce in 1833, formalizing diplomatic relations. An interim military government has ruled Thailand, a constitutional monarchy, since a May 2014 military coup which deposed the then-elected civilian government. The United States has urged the early restoration of elected civilian government and return to democracy through elections. Over the decades, Thai democracy has been interrupted by military coups and rule, and civic and political unrest. Thailand is a key U.S. security ally in Asia, and the country s stability and growth are important to the maintenance of peace in the region. Since World War II

When I worked at Sun Travel, I was a full-time student in college. This company was willing to work with me to adjust my hours as needed.
Typically, I worked within the ticketing department or at the front desk. I would assist within both of those areas as needed. Because of this particular job, I was able to learn and develop skills that I might not have otherwise had. I was able to learn and grow.
Management was good and I was able to address any issues that I had with them. They were willing to help me find a way to be successful when I encountered a problem.
My co-workers were very submitted to what they were doing. Agents were ready to fight for their clients and make sure they got the best service. Quality Assurance and ticketing did everything they could to make sure that clients got tickets as quickly as possible. It was like a big f

Their detailed search tools give you the opportunity to focus your search on just those results that fit your criteria. You're able to choose specific travel days and times and even your cabin class. If you can afford to be flexible with your travel plans, KAYAK can be an even bigger help. Search flexible dates and add nearby airports to increase your chances of finding an affordable rate. Because KAYAK is a travel search engine, all the results you see on their website are pulled from other travel sites, so you'll have to go to the site you end up choosing to complete the booking process. Remember, this still saves you time because you don't need to run searches on every single travel site. If you want, though, you do have the option to compare rates to those offered by other companies by s

# Rack up points so you can take to the skies.
Summer is the perfect time to travel. The warm weather probably has you itching for a nice vacation to the beach, where you can play in the sun and sip your favorite cocktail. Hitching a plane ride there can be easier, and cheaper, if you have the right credit card.
Some credit cards are better than others when it comes to giving you points for airline miles, says Bill Hardekopf of LowCards.com. Mileage cards are probably more abundant or lucrative than they were a few years ago, especially for people with excellent credit scores, he says.
In addition to the mileage, these cards come with a number of other perks. The most significant perk of airline cards is the frequent flyer benefits. The Chase United MileagePlus Explorer waives the first checked bag fee, saving $50 roundtrip; the Delta Gold Skymiles gives priority boarding to cardholders, says Alicia Jao, vice president of travel media at

# The Best Day of the Week to Book Airline Flights
The Perfect Time
Peter Greenberg, author of "The Travel Detective Bible" and editor of the Peter Greenberg Worldwide travel website, recommends that those looking to buy the cheapest plane tickets do so at 1 a.m. Eastern time on Wednesdays. This is when airlines typically change over their pricing for the next week, meaning that the older, cheaper fares are available for only 24 more hours before they are canceled.
How It Happens
Greenberg explains that airfare cycles start on Friday and can go two ways. First, a larger airline can raise its rates late that evening. By Saturday morning, most of the major airlines have followed. But if competitors don't match the fare, the airline that started the increase is likely to drop its rates back to close to the original level by Sunday night or Monday morning.
It also works the opposite way. In most cases, a smaller airline will

# The Best Airlines for Cheap Flights
Looking for a deal but don’t want to hate yourself for buying a cheap ticket? These five airlines might be for you.
Mar 15, 2014 at 7:00AM
Cheap tickets are rarely what they seem. Say you find an ultra-low fare. Will you also be required to pay baggage fees? Other convenience charges? Or, think of your family. Will your kids really be able to sit still for hours in a decades-old aircraft with an equally ancient, one-size-fits-all entertainment system? You may want to pay a bit more for a better ride on a quality carrier.
Which one, you ask? In 2013, rating specialist Skytrax ranked these three as the best airlines among North America's low-cost carriers:
Skytrax ranks Virgin America as the best low-cost North Ame

Half of the Greek economy is based on service sector and tourism industry employment, and many Europeans visit Greece during the summer when the most festivities and services are available. Be sure to avoid busy school holidays when tickets will be in greater demand. Purchase tickets outside of popular holidays, like spring break and Thanksgiving. # The Best Time to Buy Airline Tickets? It's Not So Simple Anymore
The days are growing shorter. The candy aisles grow larger and the Halloween costume pop-up stores occupy all the vacant storefronts. That can only mean one thing -- the holidays are around the corner and it's time for travel. First we'll go over the woods to Grandmother's House and then we'll be planning our Caribbean getaways in the depths of the tundra that is February.
There's a lot of information out there about the best time to buy plane tickets. The collective common knowledge Lifehacker says that Tuesdays at 3 p.m. Eastern and two months out from the date of travel is the ideal time to snag the lowest fares. However, it's not that simple anymore. Here are a number of other considerations to make when shopping around for flights to

# The Best Time to Travel to Europe
Published/Revised December 12, 2012 By Terri Fogarty 6 Comments
The best time weather-wise to travel to Europe depends on what you like to do and where you are going.
Summers are hot, which is why most Europeans head for the beaches. Fall is generally rainier than in spring and winter is, well wintery.
Europe can be quite stormy in winter, but weather in northern Germany is going to be a lot colder than that in southern Italy or Greece. If you are a skier, cold weather is exactly what you want! And winter-time trips to experience the Christmas Markets are generally a bargain and January sales in Paris are fabulous. Obviously, there are fewer tourists in winter and when school is in session than the rest of the year. Be sure that there are no major shows taking place when you want to go, or hotels will be at high rates and perhaps even sold out. Your Travel agent can give you that info

Coverage Types
Consumer looking to buy travel insurance for a cruise should understand the different types of coverage available. Trip cancellation insurance refunds the cost of a cruise if the consumer must cancel the trip. Trip interruption insurance covers extra costs a consumer may incur if they need to return home before the scheduled end of the cruise. Emergency medical care or transportation is often a separate insurance product. This insurance covers the costs of medical care or medical transportation in the event of illness or injury.
Cancellation Waiver
Cancellation waivers are different than travel insurance, but are worth considering. Cruise lines sell cancellation waivers direct to the consumer. A cancellation waiver allows the consumer to cancel the cruise without penalty or with a reduced penalty. Cancellation waivers typically expire 24 to 72 hours before a trip is set to begin. Though

# The Simple Cost of Traveling the World
Over the past 3 months at The Great Family Escape we have been spending most of our time writing and discussing on the subject of WHY?
Why trade in everything and hit the road with the kids?
I think we all get the point. We love to travel. And we love the benefits travel offers our young kids. We know exactly WHY we are embracing the travel lifestyle.
So I guess it's time to stop asking WHY .
Embracing Simplicity
One of the happiest, freest times of my life was when I was poor. I don't want to say I was poor in the sense of poverty - I wasn't struggling. But sure enough, I was poor. I was in school making about $150 a week. I slept on the floor, shared a filthy house with a bunch of friends and did pretty much whatever I wanted. All I owned was a beat up old Ford. All I had to pay each month was my rent and car insurance. Life was fantastic.<

# The Evolution of Online Travel [INFOGRAPHIC]

These days, it's hard to imagine booking travel without leaving the comfort of your computer chair. But booking flights electronically is actually a relatively new invention, despite its ubiquitous presence nowadays. In fact, electronic reservations were not available outside airline terminals until the mid-1970s, when access was limited to licensed travel agents and only provided for a few domestic airlines.
Since the rise of online travel in the mid-1990s, it seems that there's an endless well of ways to get your travel fix. From classic travel aggregators to especially luxe vacation packages at a discount

# The Best Travel Sites
Looking to plan and book a bargain getaway? Traveling in a rush for an emergency? The best travel websites will help get you where you're going at a price you can afford.

Some days, when I remember life before the Internet, email, and smartphones, I cannot even comprehend how I traveled. Long (long) gone are the days of keeping an atlas under the passenger seat of the car, or rolling down the highway scanning motel sign after motel sign for "Vacancy." And travel agents? Forget about it. Travel websites have revolutionized how we plan, book, and even pay for travel.
Online travel services make it easy to research those big-ticket items, such as flights and hotels, but also the nitty gritty, such as the best seat on a particular airplane, or the best place to grab breakfast in Chicago O'Hare (the answer is Tortas Fronteras, in terminals 1, 3, and 5).

Over the last few weeks there has been extensive and often terrifying coverage of the Ebola outbreak in parts of West Africa, and our thoughts are with all those fighting this dreadful disease.
Whilst the coverage has highlighted that the disease is not airborne and can only be contracted by contact with body fluids from an infected person, we have had a number of people asking if it is safe to travel to South Africa, Tanzania, Botswana and other destinations in Eastern and Southern Africa.
The short answer is ‘yes – you can still safely travel to Africa’, however given the seriousness of the situation in West Africa we feel it is worth expanding on this. There are two key points to consider:
Africa is big – really. really big.
One thing that many people not involved with the travel industry are not aware of is just how huge Africa is. for example, the outbr

# Tips for travel writing
• Write in the first person, past tense (or present if the action really justifies it), and make your story a personal account, interwoven with facts, description and observation.
• Many writers start their piece with a strong – but brief – anecdote that introduces the general feeling, tone and point of the trip and story. Something that grabs the reader's attention and makes them want to read on. Don't start with the journey to the airport – start with something interesting, not what happened first.
• Early on you need to get across the point of the story and trip – where you were, what were you doing there and why. If there is a hook – a new trend, discovery or angle – make that clear within the first few paragraphs.
• Try to come up with a narrative thread that will run throughout the piece, linking the beginning and end; a point you are making. The piece should flow, but don't tell the entire trip chronologic

# Tips From the Banker: The Real Cost of Travel in Thailand
I spent two months traveling in Thailand, making it my longest-traveled country on my Southeast Asian itinerary. During my three weeks in Laos and month in Cambodia. I found it possible to travel on an average of just USD$30 per day. Once I got to Thailand, however, keeping costs low became difficult. For some reason, I started spending Baht like it was monopoly money, especially in the islands.
I had heard previously, and can now confirm, that the north of Thailand is easy on a tight budget. As one moves south, costs for accommodation start to double, triple, and even quadruple. Pricey accommodation accounted for my biggest expenditure, and drinks came in at a close second.
However, when I considered my overall expenditure, I realized that the costs were still very reasonable, especially considering that I was in Thailand during high season, including Christmas and New Years.

These are typical mosquito nets you'll find in most tropical climates (Photo: Anne Sterck)
A mosquito net also keeps other critters out, like creepy crawlies or falling geckoes.
I wouldn't dream of traveling without one when heading for any warm, humid places.
It's especially important if you're traveling on a budget. Air conditioning helps keep mosquitoes at bay but I often stay in huts or out of doors - and there's nothing to protect you then.
To be effective a mosquito net should have a close mesh - about 120-200 holes per square inch or 1.2 mm x 1.2 mm is considered the best.
While cotton may seem more natural, it collects dampness and weighs more than a synthetic fiber so I'd opt for the polyester type nets.

# Introduction
To the student:
Welcome to this tour of Ibn Battuta's medieval travels. You will be following in the footsteps of this famous 14th century Muslim traveler, exploring the places he visited and the people he encountered. To help you learn more about his adventures there will be images of the people and places he saw, information on the food he might have tasted, and side trips into the past and future.
Ibn Battuta started on his travels when he was 20 years old in 1325. His main reason to travel was to go on a Hajj, or a Pilgrimage to Mecca, as all good Muslims want to do. But his traveling went on for about 29 years and he covered about 75,000 miles visiting the equivalent of 44 modern countries which were then mostly under the governments of Muslim leaders of the World of Islam, or Dar al-Islam . [See the map below.]
He met many dangers and had many adventures along the way. He was attacked by bandits, almost drowned in a sin

Sara Naumann is currently an eleven-year (eleven years!) resident in Shanghai. She has spent over 15 years in Asia, first in Japan and now in China. Born to American parents working at the American School in Japan, Sara even spent her formative years in Tokyo before the whole family moved to Chestnut, IL (geographical center of the state!) to the family farm. Her experiences have given her a mixed palate and appreciation for the best that all of these places have to offer: sparkling delicious koshihikari rice from Niigata, Japan, the tastiest dumplings in all of China and the juiciest sweet corn east of the Mississippi.

# Tibet Travel Permit
Last updated: November,18 2015
Contrary to popular belief, a tangible Tibet Travel Permit aka Tibet Tourism Bureau (T.T.B.) permit does exist and there are no plans of eliminating this permit in the near future. A permit is required to enter Tibet. The TTB costs vary depending on your departure city, and there is no expiration date for the permit. You do not need a permit to leave Tibet, however you will need an additional transit permit to enter certain cities within Tibet as well as Mt. Everest Base camp (60 Yuan per person, 405 Yuan per vehicle), which can be easily arranged by your tour operator. You do need a China Visa as well as a passport that is valid for at least 6 months before applying for the TTB.
Chinatibettrain is cooperating with Tibet Travel Org CITS. the top local tour operator, to help travelers obtain Tibet travel permit. The agency also offers EXTRA VALUE tour packages. T

# TRAVELLING AHEAD OF THE MASSES
Bhutan is one of the rare countries in the world where you can still travel ahead of the masses. For centuries Bhutan lived completely isolated from the outer world and it’s only since the 1970’s that tourism is possible. To safeguard its rich natural environment, religion and culture, the country has consciously adopted a controlled tourism and development policy. Although there is no longer a restriction on visitor numbers; all tourists have to pay a minimum daily tariff of approximately 200 US dollars, fixed by the government. This automatically regulates the number of tourists.
All tourists (group or individual) must travel on a pre-planned, prepaid, guided package tour or custom designed travel program. You cannot travel independently in the kingdom. The arrangements must be made through an official

# Make sure you complain to Financial Ombudsman Service
2 out of 5. reviewed on Nov 25, 2015
My Cebu Pacific flight in Philippines was cancelled due to bad weather. I wrote to TID; after admitting that the policy covered flight cancellations due to bad weather, its assessor Cerberus Special Risks claimed that it needed more documentation, which I sent to it. Even for low cost airlines, the assessor wants a letter stating that no recompense has occurred although I substituted a nil return from my Cebu Pacific travel fund.
The assessor then settled the claim for a miniscule amount but suggested that the Product Disclosure Statemen

# Top 25 Ways to Save on Europe Travel
When is a dollar not worth its weight in gold? When you're measuring in pounds.
British pounds, that is.
A few years ago, the pound reached an exchange rate of $2 against the American dollar for the first time since September 1992. While the pound has weakened a bit since then, it still makes for a challenging exchange rate for Americans traveling in the United Kingdom.
And though the exchange rate for the euro remains decent, Europe is one of the world's most expensive regions to explore. Hotel rates are sky-high in major capitals like London. Paris and Moscow, and the hefty cost of living (particularly in Scandinavian countries) makes everyday purchases such as meals and public transportation tickets a pricey proposition for travelers.
But that doesn'

# Cheap Flights to Asia
By Greg Rodgers. Asia Travel Expert
Greg Rodgers is an experienced travel writer, photographer, and world nomad. In 2005, Greg traded his corporate office for a backpack and set out to see the world; he never came back.
Crossing the Pacific is simply daunting. Anyone who has flown to Hawaii knows the pain of that long flight, particularly those flying from eastern parts of the United States. Now, take that flight and double it -- Hawaii is only roughly halfway to Asia!
With cheap food and accommodation, Asia is a great budget destination; however, one dilemma exists: getting on the ground in the first place! Unfortunately, cheap flights to Asia can be difficult to find; the ticket price proves to be a barrier for many Americans who would otherwise love to visit Asia.

# Top 9 Tibet Travel Tips
Note Updated: Mount Everest (Tibet side) is reopened from July 1, 2015!
1. Plan Far Enough in Advance
All Tibet tours must be booked at least 20 days in advance. It normally takes 2 3 days to confirm hotel bookings, and about a further 10 days for the Tibet Tourism Bureau to issue the Tibet Entry Permit.
You should make sure you secure an Entry Permit, especially if new restrictions are brought in, before you apply for a visa and make the final preparations for your trip, unless you are willing to consider alternatives to Tibet once you arrive in China.
Recommended duration for a Tibet trip: If your travel will be limited to areas around Lhasa, 4 days is enough; if you want to go to Mt. Everest, you need at least a
