Italy, one of Europe's most popular destinations for American tourists, is easy for Americans to explore. With few arrival requirements for U.S. citizens, commencing your trip is easy. But as the seat of the ancient Roman Empire and the Roman Catholic Church, Italy offers a depth and breadth of history that will prove challenging to explore entirely within the length of your trip. Any visit to the country must include art museums, fine restaurants, wineries, historical sites -- and a plan for your next trip to the country.

Passport

Citizens from countries outside the European Union, like the United States, are required to present a passport valid for at least three months beyond the intended stay in Italy. If you are a citizen of any European Union state, you need only present a national identity card to enter Italy. As an additional safety measure, print a copy of the picture page of your passport and store it separately from your passport. Although not required for entry, a copy of your passport will aid in replacing the document if it were to be lost or stolen.
