As you may already know by now, I am a self-confessed travel junkie.  I scrimp and save and scrimp so more just so I can get travelin .

Back in the day, before the onset of this thing called the internet , people would go to their travel agent for their flight tickets.  These days, people are using the internet much more to book their travel.  There are a few ways in which your flight can be booked on the internet:

Sites such as Travelocity , Orbitz. and Expedia make it easy to look for flights and search for the best connections and deals.  These guys are the big boys of online booking engines.  They add on a small booking fee (kind of like an online travel agent-bot) for their services.

The thing about Travelocity, Orbitz, and Expedia is that they are owned by travel agents or even by airlines.  For example, Orbitz is owned by American, Continental, Delta, Northwest and United Airlines.  Which means that you might not get a complete aggregation of the airli ... Read more »

Cheap airfare deals were unheard of until a few years back. This was the time when airlines used to publish their airfares in directories or the traditional travel agent would actually had to reserve your seat on the phone, no matter what, the entire process was time consuming and cumbersome. With the help of new improved modern technology, airlines authorities sell their unused seats at the last minute at a variety of venues, sometimes they sell tickets with cheapest airfare. Drawbacks here lies is with a load of information out there, finding the right information aboutcheap airfare deals can be a downright frustrating experience and confusing as well and you land ... Claudette Covey is the Executive Editor for travAlliancemedia covering Mexico, Canada and the U.S. East Coast for travel agents and consumers. Today she talks to us about how she got her start as a travel writer, how business writing differs from consumer writing and the hottest places to explore in Mexico.

Before we get into what you re doing now, how did you get started as a travel writer and what led to your early successes?

I wish I could say there was a strategy behind my career as a travel writer, but that simply isn’t the case. After graduating from college with a degree in creative writing, I moved to New York City with the aim of obtaining any job I could find in the publishing industry. My first job was as an editorial assistant with the now-defunct True Detective magazine. I loved the job but the pay was abysmal.

After a year or so with the magazine, I contacted an employment agency that specialized in publishing to find a ... Read more »

Searching for flights is a confusing business. There are numerous websites and airlines, and even when I think I’ve found the best option, I never know what I actually missed.

We all know websites like Expedia. Kayak and Orbitz. and sometimes these big websites are more than enough. But from all those other smaller websites out there, how do we know which are good and which are less convenient? Which ones offer cheap airline flights and which ones are a waste of time? Personally, I also dislike websites that compare prices over numerous windows. I want to see everything in one simple window within the website I’m using.

Here are 3 travel websites which are less known, but offer low fares, single windows and and some extra spark in the form of an interesting UI or useful information about the flights. I find that many times, when I search for flights, I’d rather use them over the big shots.

FareGeek had me at geek . Really. How can I not use a website with a n ... Read more »

Over the last few years there has been a proliferation of comparison sites on the web. And these sites have really come into their own of late since they can do the hard work for you, for various travel services, allowing you to forgo the lengthy process of hopping from site to site to find the cheapest flights, insurance, hotel deals and car hire options. We've trawled through the web to find the best in show.

If you think a comparison website should be added to the list, email your suggestion to benji.lanyado@guardian.co.uk - and we'll put it to the test. But the perceived glaring omissions are for a reason: sites like Expedia. Thomson. and Travelocity may search for plenty of options in their respective fields, but the comparison sites examine them against what their competitors are churning out. For example, many websites collate thousands of hotel prices - such as Late Rooms. Hotels.com. Skoosh - but Trivago (our pick, below) will compare the results of all of these sit ... Read more »

Airfare tends to be the most cost-prohibitive part of planning a vacation or trip. And with delayed flights, over-crowded cabins, excess fees and no free food, it’s surprising that airlines are able to charge such high tickets prices.

During the course of a day, prices fluctuate depending on availability. “Airfare is the most volatile part of traveling compared to the price of hotels or cruises,” says Gabe Saglie, senior editor at Travelzoo.

Despite the abundance of metasearch engines, like Kayak, Google Flights, or Fly.com, and online travel agencies (OTAs), finding the lowest-priced airfare is still a tedious process. “There’s not one place or website where you can find the absolute lowest price,” says John DiScala, editor in chief of JohnnyJet.com. “It changes every minute and it takes time to find the cheapest price.”

To simplify your search, setting up daily or weekly price alerts will help you know when prices drop so you can get the best deal, suggests ... Read more »

Astonishingly exotic and utterly compelling, Vietnam is a country of breathtaking natural beauty with an incredible heritage that quickly becomes addictive.

Unforgettable experiences are everywhere in Vietnam. There’s the sublime: gazing over a surreal seascape of limestone islands from the deck of a Chinese junk in Halong Bay. The ridiculous: taking 10 minutes just to cross the street through a tsunami of motorbikes in Hanoi. The inspirational: exploring the world’s most spectacular cave systems in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. The comical: watching a moped loaded with honking pigs weave a wobbly route along a country lane. And the contemplative: witnessing a solitary grave in a cemetery of tens of thousands of war victims.

The Thais may grumble, but in Southeast Asia nothing really comes close: Vietnamese food is that good. Incredibly subtle in its flavours and outstanding in its diversity, Vietnamese cooking is a fascinating draw for traveller ... Read more »

I have probably written it thousands of times on my websites and in e-mails that the best way to book your holiday in Greece is through a reliable Greek travel agency. The main reason is because of the islands and the ferry connections which makes coordinating itineraries a difficult job for people who don't know the system. People have e-mailed me after booking their hotels because they could not find the ferries to get them to the hotels they had booked. Even with ferry schedules now on the internet there are problems. The schedules can be changed at any time, boats can be canceled due to weather, mechanical failure, strikes or at the whim of a ferry company (for example if the boat is not 3/4 full they lose money so they cancel the trip by saying the boat is broken.) A Greek travel agency can change your arrangements without a penalty and will make sure your trip goes smoothly. This is particularly useful in the event of a strike since these are not spontaneous uprisings but sche ... Read more »

    Searching for Flights

    1. How many tickets can I book in one transaction?

You can book up to 9 adult tickets at a time. However, please be aware that reserving the maximum number of tickets will limit the availability to flights to those that have at least 9 seats. For flight deals, we also cannot guarantee that all passengers in a single booking will be able to take advantage of the special discounted price, because of airline limits on the number of tickets available at the these low prices.

    2. How do I find the lowest fares?

You can find the lowest fares by using our Best Deals in 7 Days feature, searching for alternative routes, booking roundtrip tickets, and signing up for our email newsletter. Note also that fares on weekdays are usually lower than those on weekends, and fares during the early morning or late evening are usually lower than during the rest of the day. Cheap buses provide competition to trains for intercity and long-distance travel in Germany. Coaches are often slower but much cheaper than railways.

Long-distance and intercity bus travel has finally become legal in Germany from the start of 2015. New companies such as MeinFernbus and Flixbus are already providing competition to the existing Berlin Linien Bus and German Railways (Deutsche Bahn). While established giants such as the ADAC and Deutsche Post are still studying the market, smaller companies are already operating on various routes throughout Germany and neighboring countries. The bus network is expanding almost weekly at the moment.

Up to 2015, bus services in Germany were mostly illegal between city centers otherwise served by railways. This 1930s law finally made way to allow buses to provide competition to the railways. Buses may be slower and less comfortable than trains but in many cases, especially if not booked in advance, much cheaper too.

It has been awhile since I lasted posted a review -- been a busy summer and start to the new academic year. Even when I am not actively blogging, I still file away emails that I receive that are Travel 2.0 related to, hopefully, review when I have more time. Most of these are from PR people wanting to promote their website and products.

So what I decided to do today was to look back at the oldest ones that I had files away and see which of them is still of interest today. These three were all promoted to me in April 2015, about 18 months ago.

71 Miles - is an early staycation website, founded before the concept of staycation became popularized. Its beta version was focused on Northern California, and its plans in April 2015 were to go national in "the coming months." That obviously did not happen, as it is still Northern California based, and they do not seem to talk about going national any longer. And they seem to be looking for advertisers on their homepage.

Sitting pretty as one of Asia s best-kept travel secrets, the spicy, scenic island of Taiwan makes a habit of smashing visitor preconceptions. Outsiders tend to see it as somewhere notable only for its technological prowess, an image consistently reinforced by the global prominence of Made in Taiwan stickers. The fuller picture, however, is a destination that serves up awe-inspiring panoramas, a rainbow of different cultures and a startlingly rich history.

Alongside night markets, cycle trails and hot springs, there are gleaming skyscrapers, hulking mountains and sparkling lakes. When you factor in the manageable size of the island, which tops out at less than half the size of Scotland. the appeal becomes even more significant.

Taiwan is one of the few places on earth where ancient religious and cultural practices still thrive in an overwhelmingly modernist landscape. This juxtaposition is expressed most clearly in Taipei. where futuristic marvels like Taipei 101 sti ... Read more »

The beach at Caleton, near Playa Larga

Since independence in 1902, Cuba had been a US satellite state. The Cuban economy was dependent on America's and the second most important person in the island was the American ambassador. During this time, most of the population lived in poverty and social inequalities were large. It was during this period that Cuba became a popular tourist destination for United States citizens, mainly due to Havana's European-like beauty, its high standard of living (Cuba having the largest Latin American middle class per-capita in 1958), and the large number of shows, events, and casinos catering to tourists. During such era more Americans resided in Cuba than Cubans in USA. Many Americans had beach homes during the summer, and rich American companies also owned large factories and land in the island nation. However there were large gaps in wealth and corruption was rife while most property was owned by foreigners.

To many, Jamaica is the heart of the Caribbean. The birthplace of reggae music, the Rastafari movement and all-inclusive resorts, Jamaica symbolizes many of the things most loved and, perhaps, most misunderstood about the region. A simple remedy to clear the confusion? Come to the land of sugar cane, coffee and limestone, and form your own opinion. Your new ideas are bound to be swathed in cream-colored beaches. bordered by rugged Blue Mountains. anchored in. continue

Jamaica is divided into 14 parishes, each of which is home to respective towns, neighborhoods and often b eaches. Within these provinces, some popular areas of the island for tourists are Negril, Montego Bay (often referred to as "MoBay") and Ocho Rios. These areas are home to most of the popular resorts, many of which offer all-inclusive packages. But the island is much more diverse than other Caribbean destinations, so visitors should also check out the jungles, plains, rivers and towns of Jamaica, too.

Sandwiched between Mexico. Guatemala and the shimmering Caribbean Sea, Belize occupies a slice of paradise that is packed with culture, wildlife and a wondrous selection of historical sites. Much of the mainland remains swathed in jungle, where the vestiges of ancient cities punctuate verdant forest canopies. Caracol is the most famous. Its crumbling temples and stone pyramids stand as powerful reminders of the Maya civilisation.

The history is fascinating for sure, but most people visit Belize to see its natural wonders and admirable conservation work; the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary was the first jaguar sanctuary in the world; the island of Half Moon Caye has been entirely dedicated to the conservation of birds; and the protected Belize Barrier Reef harbours an incredible array of marine life. Visitors can swim with sharks and stingrays along colourful walls of coral, or explore the Blue Hole, renowned as one of the world s best dive sites.

Instead think about what activities are planned and what the ideal vacation looks like for YOU. Be honest about what type of traveler you are as well.

    1. Baggage restrictions of all airlines.

Airlines all have different baggage policies. It's important to note the restrictions of the airline you are flying and not necessarily the airline you booked through (codeshare flights).
