The sightseeing of Poland by train is becoming ever more popular. It is an inexpensive and very convenient way of moving from one tourist attraction to another, especially that most major Polish cities are now connected by intercity train services.

In Poland, train fares are priced according to distance, class of service and train category. First class, intercity, couchette and sleeping carriages tickets are available at an extra cost. A booking charge is also added to the cost of intercity tickets.

Children up to 16 years of age travelling with a parent or guardian, are entitled to a 33% discount from the full ticket price. Proof of age may be required.

Discounted price "Tourist Tickets" are available for weekend travellers. These tickets are valid for travel starting after 6 p.m. on Fridays and ending before 6 a.m. on Mondays.

There are also other discount schemes available, such as group travel tickets. For groups in excess of 10 people, enquiries for further information should be made directly at station information desks.

Tickets are available from rail stations and travel agents. In some circumstances, tickets can also be bought on the train but with a small surcharge.

Most railway stations have separate booths for selling local and international tickets.

Examples of Ticket Prices

For a journey from Warsaw to Wroclaw, an adult passenger would pay, depending on the category of train between PLN 90 and 110 for a first class ticket and PLN 45 and 60 for a second class ticket.

The fare from Warsaw to Krakow costs between PLN 60 and 100 for a first class ticket and from PLN 45 to 70 for a second class ticket.

A ticket from Warsaw to Gdansk costs between PLN 70 and 100 for a first class ticket or between PLN 45 and 70 for a second class ticket.

Inter Rail and Euro Domino

The Inter Rail pass is accepted in Poland on all trains.

Poland, together with the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina have been placed in Travel Zone D for second class travel on all types of trains services. Services like eurocity, intercity, express or inter-regional trains are available but at an additional cost.

Another option is the Euro Domino ticket which entitles the passenger to travel on the European railway network. Euro Domino is a personal multiple use ticket valid within the EU countries for periods between 3 to 8 days. The booking fee is about EUR 3.00, and the Euro Domino ticket cost depends on the number of days and the countries you intend to visit.

Transporting pets and bicycles

To transport your pet by train the following rules need to be observed:

- Animals must have a valid health certificate including vaccinations and also a valid ticket

- Dogs must be muzzled and smaller animals should be transported in cages or in baskets

- Travelling animals must always be under control of an adult

The price of the pet ticket also depends on the route and the class of train.

Bicycles should be transported in the luggage compartment. Please note that not all trains have this facility so enquiries at train stations are advisable.

In the absence of a dedicated luggage compartment, the bicycle can only be carried in the first entrance doorway of the first carriage or in the last entrance doorway of the last carriage. It is important not to block passageways or the doors on the train with the bicycle. A special ticket will need to be purchased for your bicycle
