#ask mr jeeves # Modem Initialization Strings (These strings have been proven to work with ASCEND MAX & TNT Routers) My Computer | DUN | Internet Junction Properties | Configure | Connection | Advanced | Extra Settings. First, before you try any of the initialization strings below, it is advisable that you know what brand and model modem you have AND that you have the latest driver for your modem. Do not let Windows automatically install software for it. These Windows drivers are probably out of date. Use the software that came with the modem. Then go online to your modem's manufacturer web site and be sure you have the latest firmware revision. This is very important! Second, we have found that for many nondescript modems (modems not mentioned on this page) and the diamond supramax modem, that using ATZ works well. If you are receiving the error "The computer you are dialing is not answering" or it is taking multiple times to connect, the ATZ string will work. So, if you have a modem not mentioned on this page, a Diamond SupraFax modem, or you can't find the name of your modem, try using ATZ. The strings themselves are all case sensitive. All letters within the strings need to be in UPPER CASE, unless otherwise noted. Feel free to try as many as you like. Sometimes it takes trying a few to find the one that works best with your particular modem. If your modem is not on the list below, check out the other init. string links at the bottom of this page. To add an initialization string to your modem, follow the instructions below.
Type in the initialization string on this line. Be sure to click OK at every screen. Then retry the connection. For All Rockwell Chipset Based Modems, try the strings in this table first.
