With a little planning, your phone will be the least of your travel concerns.

Passport? Check. Low airfare? Nailed it! You’re making headway on your vacation to-do list, but don’t forget to see if your phone’s ready for the international trip. Nothing dulls a vacation quicker than bill-shock.

Directions to that hole-in-the-wall restaurant your guidebook swears by. Translating signs along the way. Sending pictures to friends. All that data use adds up.

Taking a long weekend?

Now, your wireless plan travels just like you do. When you take a trip abroad, you can add TravelPass℠. starting at just $2 a day per line and use your domestic voice, text and data plan while traveling to Mexico, Canada and beyond. You also only pay $10 a day per line in more than 65 other countries. You re only charged on the days you use your device abroad—it s an economical way to stay connected while you travel.

You’re only charged on the days you use your phone. So if you don’t send a text, use data, or make or receive calls while traveling internationally, then you won’t have to pay a dime extra.

It’s simple to use, too. Add TravelPass from My Verizon and you’ll get a text message explaining the fee when you arrive. The first time you use your phone (such as sending a text or answering a call), the fee begins. Use your phone as much as you want for the next 24 hours. You’ll only get another TravelPass charge if you use your device again after the first 24 hours.

Just remember that your minutes, texts and data will count toward your regular plan. That means if you go over your plan allowance, you will be charged overages based on your domestic plan. All 4G LTE World Devices from Verizon (such as smartphones, tablets, Verizon Jetpacks and USB modems) are eligible for TravelPass.

Taking a trip for up to 3 weeks?

If you don’t have a World Device and if you need a device for 21 days or less, consider the International Travel Program (must be on a qualified domestic plan). You’ll get service for a basic phone, smartphone or USB modem while in certain international destinations.

Before you leave the US, Verizon will send you a World Device and travel adapter to use on your trip. Just pay the one-time shipping cost. There are no daily rental fees or security deposits—just pay for the usage (talk, text and data depending on the device). The charges appear on your regular Verizon Wireless bill. Plus, you can keep your regular phone number and transfer contacts using Verizon Cloud or Backup Assistant℠ Plus.

Taking a month-long trip for fun or frequent trips for work?

Month-to-month plans help frequent international travelers get ongoing data coverage. You can choose the Mexico and Canada plan or a plan that offers service in more than 140 countries.

The bottom line

Two things work in your favor when you set up a data plan: you will be accessing much lower rates and getting notifications on your data usage.

To keep your data in check. turn off your email and push notifications, and use Wi-Fi when it’s available in airports, hotels and restaurants to browse the web or check your email.
