Hand Baggage Allowance

Each passenger is allowed to bring one carry-on luggage item as well as one small personal item for each flight. A traveler’s carry-on bag and personal item must be able to easily fit in the overhead bins or under the seat in front of them at the cabin crew’s discretion.

Maximum dimensions allowed for carry-on luggage are 9 inches x 14 inches x 22 inches (22 cm x 35 cm x 56 cm) including both the wheels and handles.

A personal item is generally defined as a purse, handbag, laptop or briefcase, book bag, or other similarly sized item. Maximum dimensions allowed for a small personal item are 9 inches x 10 inches x 17 inches (22 cm x 25 cm x 43 cm).

Checked Baggage Allowance

Checked baggage service charges apply at any point where bags are checked, although some customers are exempt from charges for bags within specified size and weight limits. Services charges for the first two check baggage items may apply for bags with a maximum weight of 50 lbs and a maximum exterior dimension of 62 inches. Any additional bags that exceed the maximum weight or size limits are considered excess baggage and may be subject to additional fees or regulations. MileagePlus members, active military personnel or their dependents may be exempt from checked baggage service charges for one or more of their luggage items as long as these items meet the weight and size requirements. This exemption does not pertain to group reservations of ten or more passengers or when the flight is not operated by United or United Express services. Passengers are recommended to carry all delicate and valuable items with their carry-on luggage, as the TSA is required to perform a comprehensive screen on all checked baggage. These screening procedures are not considered the liability of United Airlines.

Check-In

Check-in is available within 24 hours of the flight’s scheduled departing time. Online check-in is the recommended method as it is fastest and boarding passes can be printed from a home computer. A message containing a link to your boarding pass can also be emailed to most mobile devices or laptops to be shown to check-in staff. A United Airlines app is also available for smartphone devices and can be used to instantly check-in before departure times. Regardless of check-in time, all baggage must be checked at least 30 minutes before domestic flights and 60 minutes before international connections.

Boarding Information

Most domestic flights are boarded up to 15 minutes before the scheduled departure time. With most US airports suggesting at least an hour and a half processing time, United Airlines recommends arriving at least two hours before departure. Arriving at the departure gate at least 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time is also highly recommended. Peak traffic hours at most airports are between 6:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Travelers should keep in mind that proper identification is required at all check-in desks, TSA stations and at the departure gate.

Frequent Flyer Information - MileagePlus

United Airlines offers a frequent flyer program, entitled MileagePlus, that has been voted the world’s best frequent flyer program for nine consecutive years by Global Traveler magazine. “Miles” are earned by purchasing tickets, hotel reservations, car rentals and other services. Credit cards are offered that collect MileagePlus miles through standard purchases and other bonus reward programs. Amtrak tickets can also gain MileagePlus miles as well as trips planned through United Cruises and United Vacation services. MileagePlus miles can be used to purchase United Airlines tickets as well as many other services provided by United Airlines and its partners. Flight upgrades can be made with MileagePlus miles giving passengers access to premium flight cabins, checked bag allowances and complementary premium beverages. These upgrades can be made before or after tickets and reservations are purchased, although certain benefits are only available if upgrades are made prior to check-in. Miles can also be used to book reservations at many brand-name hotels or pay for a membership to United Airlines’ United Club and Lounge located at many airports worldwide. These lounges provide free snacks, beverages and Wi-Fi for members and are also partnered with other airport lounge services to ensure that MileagePlus travelers have a private and relaxing atmosphere while waiting for connecting flights.
