The train system in Italy is run by the Ferrovie dello Stato, or State Railway system, though it is commonly called Trenitalia. Their website contains information about schedules and fares. You can travel to every major city in Italy by train as well as to most small towns and villages. If you are traveling only to the major cities, you ll appreciate the new high-speed network; it travels between Turin, Venice, Milan, Florence, Rome, and Naples. Departures are frequent, and the trains travel up to 175 m.p.h. In most cases, this network lets you travel faster by train within Italy than by plane.
