London

London isn’t just at the heart of England — it’s on the short list of great cities in the entire world. And wherever you are in Great Britain, London is always accessible, just a short train, plane or bus ride away for a day trip or weekend getaway.

The West End boasts the best theatre in the world and all of it far more accessible, with inexpensive and easier to get tickets  than on Broadway. The museums are world class and most offer free entry. And with so many of them to choose from, they are far less crowded than the Louvre in Paris. The music scene is always vibrant — with top acts from the UK and around the world performing at every size venue imaginable every night of the week. Harry Potter rides the train here. And of course the British do enjoy a pint and a chat at their local pub ... Read more »

Introducing London

One of the world's most visited cities, London has something for everyone: from history and culture to fine food and good times.

A Tale of Two Cities

London is as much about wide-open spaces and leafy escapes as it is high-density, sight-packed exploration. Central London is where you will find the major museums, galleries and most iconic sights, but visit Hampstead Heath or the new Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to escape the crowds and view the city’s greener hues up close. Or venture even further out to Kew Gardens, Richmond or Hampton Court Palace for excellent panoramas of riverside London.

Diversity

This city is very multicultural, with a third of all Londoners foreign born, representing 270 different nationalities. What unites them and visitors alike is the English language, for this is both our tongue’s birthplace and its epicentre. These cultures season the culinary aromas on London’s streets, the oft ... Machu Picchu: Trip of a Lifetime

Our series helps you plan for travel's greatest adventures. Chris Moss explains how to tackle the 550-year-old Inca citadel of Machu Picchu.

Comments

Machu Picchu is so well-known and so certain to fill travellers with high expectations that you might think it s doomed to disappoint. No other South American archaeological site comes close when it comes to visitor numbers and broad appeal (coach tourists mingle with backpackers and hardcore hikers at the ruin every day of the year). Only Sacsayhuamán in Cuzco which is usually part of a Machu Picchu itinerary is comparable for sheer scale and architectural audacity.

    Holidays to Mexico

A land of contrasts, a fusion of antiquity and modernity – book one of our holidays in Mexico and enjoy the colours, spectacle and sheer exuberance of this wonderful country.

    Ancient

Mexico is rich with history, from the ruins of Palenque, some of which date back to 226 BC, to the Pyramid of Kukulcan that dominates the landscape of Chichén Itza. Enter one of the temples in the Mayan ruins of Bon Bonampak and see vivid murals and lintels that tell stories of a long-dead civilisation. Climb 248 steps to the top of the Pyramid of the Sun in ancient Teotihuacán for incredible vistas of an Aztec city. And just as spectacular as the man-made wonders of centuries ago is Copper Canyon, consisting of six individual canyons that each have a coppery-green hue, hence the name. The Spanish discovered silver here in the 17th century and Barrancas del Cobre – as it is known in Mexico – dwarfs even the Grand Canyon in size.

    Mongolia Vacations

Mongolia boasts regions of seemingly endless, unhinged wilderness along with small towns and cities that are sprinkled throughout the land. While the country appears in some itineraries as a stopping point for journeys traveling between Russia and China, we also offer trips that focus specifically on Mongolia. Escorted tours are a great way to see this fascinating country and include transportation and sightseeing, some meals and accommodations. Some tours also feature an overnight stay in a traditional Mongolian ger.

The capital city, Ulaanbaatar, is the starting point for most Mongolian adventures and is where the majority of the country's population lives. Wander museums, monasteries and palaces to learn about the city's turbulent history. The Winter Palace of Bogd Khan was home to Mongolia's last emperor.

Outside of Ulaanbaatar, the country is sparsely populated, leaving a vast wilderness to explore. The massive Gobi de ... Read more »

The one rule your airline hates the most

If there's one regulation that airlines hate more than anything, it's the 24-hour rule.

Can you blame them? In 2012, the Transportation Department required air carriers to allow you to hold a reservation without payment or cancel a booking without penalty for 24 hours after your reservation, with some exceptions.

That allowed passengers to fix mistakes, such as a misspelled name or a wrong date. They could just cancel the ticket and rebook, as long as their departure date was more than a week away. But this government-mandated "out" clause probably also cost airlines millions in revenue.

One of the world’s great civilizations, Mexico is a melange of Mesoamerican cultures and modern indigenous tribes, Spanish traditions and a vibrant modern economy, the biggest in Latin America after Brazil. Mexico’s landscapes are just as diverse, from the shimmering blue coastline of Baja California and the iconic cactus-strewn deserts of the north, to the Mayan villages and gorgeous palm-smothered beaches of the south. You can climb volcanoes, watch whales, swim underground and tour tequila farms. And sprinkled throughout you’ll find richly adorned colonial churches, giant ancient pyramids and a sophisticated cuisine that has little in common with the world of nachos and burritos.

The 114 million people of Mexico reflect this variety, too. Communities of full-blooded indígenas represent around ten percent of the population, with the Nahua, Maya, Zapotec, Mixtec, Otomí and Totonac the largest groups. There are also a few Mexicans of pu ... Read more »

During wartime, flight crews quickly discovered that baseball caps not only provided better protection from the glaring sun when spotting enemy aircraft, but also enabled a more comfortable fit under their headsets. Long missions under the sun soaked canopy caused fatigue and a reduction of flight crew readyness. For this reason many crews began to fly with baseball caps in the Pacific Theater of Operations.

    Most Expensive Airline Tickets

While the world s largest passenger plane is readied for its inaugural flight, Singapore Airlines are making a killing by selling tickets on eBay. Sold to an Australian man for over $100,000 USD, two tickets on the maiden commercial voyage of the Airbus A380 have become the most expensive airline tickets in the world.

The plane on which these expensive tickets will be used is a double-decker airliner with four engines. The A380 can carry up to 853 passengers in economy configuration or 525 in the usual three-class configuration. These accommodations, eclipsing those of Boeing s 747, have earned the airliner classification as a superjumbo plane.

    Introducing Mongolia

Rugged Mongolia is an adventure destination where travellers can see the traditions of the past still practised today by hardy nomads dwelling on the country's vast steppes and deserts.

    Nomad Hospitality

Mongolia's nomadic culture is famous – visitors can sleep in a herder's ger (traditional felt yurt), help round up the sheep, ride horses and simply 'get back to nature'. The legacy of Chinggis Khaan and resurgent nationalist pride sharpens the experience. A culture of tremendous hospitality makes locals more accessible. In a world beset by locks and gates, it's refreshing to meet people willing to open their doors to strangers.

    Open for Business

For most of the 20th century, Mongolia was sealed off from the world; seemingly so distant that the very name of the country became a byword for remoteness and isolation. The 21st century promises the polar opposite as Mongolia has opened up to the worl ... Read more »

Many Morocco tours visit Casablanca, famous as the setting of the 1942 film starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. Characterized by a distinct European influence, this port city is home to the United Nations Square, Hassan II Mosque -- the world s second-largest -- and Arab League Park.

Marrakesh, an imperial city with rose-red architecture, is another popular stop for Morocco tours. Here, sights include the Saadian tombs, Dar Si Said Museum and the Bahia Palace. The central square, Djemaa El Fna, features acrobats, belly dancers, snake charmers, storytellers and family-run food stalls.

The medinas of Marrakesh and Fez -- Morocco s oldest city -- encompass monuments and gardens and have been designated UNESCO World Heritage sites.

    Morocco

Morocco is a North African country that has a coastline on both the North Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It has borders with Western Sahara to the south, Algeria to the east and the Spanish North African territories of Ceuta and Melilla on the Mediterranean coast in the north. It is just across the Strait of Gibraltar from Gibraltar.

    Understand Edit

Ethnically speaking, Morocco is composed mainly of Arabs and Berbers or a mixture of the two. Sizeable numbers of Berbers live mainly in the country’s mountainous regions, long areas of refuge where they have preserved their language and culture. Some segments of the population are descendants of refugees from Spain and Portugal who fled from the Reconquista, the Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula, that spanned until the 15th century.

Morocco's long struggle for independence from France ended in 1956. The internationalized city of Tangier was turned ove ... Read more »

    Mongolia Travel Guide

Mongolia is far-flung and little visited yet has much to offer, from the stunning scenery and wildlife of mountains and deserts to the emerging luxury hotels and restaurants of capital Ulaanbaatar.

History and culture abound in Mongolia and outside the main cities many Mongolians continue to live the traditional life of the malchin (herdsmen). Transporting their goods by camel and residing in portable felt and canvas tents, the nomadic lifestyle of modern-day Mongolia would still be recognisable to Ghengis Khan, the most famous Mongol of them all.

Mongolia's vast areas of wilderness, from the sprawling Gobi desert to the snow peaked mountains of the Bayan- lgi, offer plenty of scope for adventurous outdoor enthusiasts. Fishing, jeep tours, horse and camel riding, mountain biking and birdwatching are but a few of the activities on offer. Culture hunters are also well catered for with numerous temples and ruins to ... Read more »

    Montego Bay from the air

Christopher Columbus sailed into the bay in 1494 and named it "el Golfo de Buen Tiempo" or Fair Weather Bay. The first record of a Spanish settlement here shows it as Monterias. The Spaniards hunted the herds of wild hogs that used to roam the hills and produced and exported 'hog butter' or lard. The name Montego derives from the Spanish "manteca" meaning lard, and Montego Bay is shown on some ancient maps as Lard Bay.

Due in part to its location on the island's north shore, Montego Bay has long since earned the title of 'tourist capital of Jamaica.' It receives the bulk of international flights, and is home to Sangster International Airport, the larger of Jamaica's two main international airports. It is a tourist destination known for its duty free shopping, cruise line terminal, and the sheltered Doctor's Cave beach with clear turquoise waters, which is one of the most famous beaches on the isl ... My Best Airfare Deal for the Year

November 29, 2015 by Canadian Kilometers Leave A Comment

Generally, you don t have mileage running deals anymore, especially with less than 100% redeemable mile earnings, revenue based earning, and higher fares.

However, I booked the best airfare deal of the year just a month ago, when British Airways had an incredible fare sale on flights to Europe . Flights to London were advertised at $2015, but the actual price was even lower, at around $1800. However, as the day progressed, people discovered that it was working for continental Europe, allowing you to save on APD, which was roughly $220. The base fare was $476.

    $1500 Fare

However, what was even more amazing was that you could stack another discount on these fares. As an AARP member you can take $400 off on a business class fare . applicable to all J-class fare buckets. This let you lower the base fare to  ... Read more »

    Namibia safari

is very different from the typical savanna safari experience. It is much more about remarkable desert scenery and vast empty landscapes, where wildlife interactions are much more infrequent and highly prized.

    Upsides.

Namibia is one of the world's most lightly populated countries. It is a truly special place, one which we absolutely adore and return to as often as we can. We are always amazed at few people choose to travel on safari here, especially given how safe, healthy and cost effective it can be.

The main upsides are the remarkable and diverse desert scenery and the wonderful desert-adapted wildlife, as well as the diverse culture including some very remote and authentic tribespeople.

Additionally Namibia can be accessed by self-drive safari, which means that it can be very economical by comparison with travel in most African countries. It is also virtually malaria free and has a very healthy climate, ... Read more »

    Nepal Travel Warning

    Last Updated: October 8, 2015

The Department of State warns U.S. citizens of the risks of travel to Nepal following the 7.8 magnitude earthquake on April 25. While the frequency and severity of aftershocks have greatly diminished, the possibility of earthquakes or aftershocks continues. The overall effect of the initial earthquake and its aftershocks varied greatly across the country. Areas close to the epicenters suffered significant damage, while other areas in the country were nearly unaffected. This replaces the Travel Warning dated July 2, 2015.

The April 25 earthquake and its aftershocks destabilized steep, mountainous areas, and severe landslides have occurred in some affected areas. Monsoon rains, which began in June and largely ended in September, may have further destabilized these areas. Although trekking permits are being issued, not all trekking areas are safe for travel.
