Award's shortlist announced

The eagerly awaited shortlist of entries for the 2016 Business Travel Awards has been announced. More than 80 companies, teams and individuals, have made it through to the final stage of the judging process, which takes place in November.

Mike Toynbee, chairman of the judging panel, was delighted with not only the record number of entries received, but also the quality. The response this year has been the best ever – in one category alone we had in excess of 30 entries – and the standard has never been better.

“The judges certainly had their work cut out and drawing up the shortlist proved harder than ever, with the top contenders in some categories separated by a mere point or two.”

It is now up to the judges to deliberate on the details for which of the finalists will be named as the winner in each category. The results of their deliberations will be announced at th ... Read more »

    Have your say

HOLIDAY companies have faced tough times during the recession but Sharon Munro, the boss of Glasgow-based Barrhead Travel, enjoys her job so much sometimes she pinches herself, writes Erikka Askeland.

Munro, 39, has been with the company her father Bill founded in 1968 since she got her first part-time job there as a Saturday girl.

In 2007 she led a management buy out in a succession plan that saw ownership of the group remain with the family. Under her stewardship, the company has seen dramatic growth and faced the challenges brought to the industry by internet booking and low-cost airlines head on.

    Property Spotlight: Riverwalk Properties

Audley CEO Ian Simkins tells me the British firm is planning to open the 7,000-square-foot office at 77 N. Washington St. during the first week of March. Audley has already hired 27 people for the office, he says, and expects to have as many as 40 there by the end of the year.

"The demand we can see already warrants an increase in more staff," Simkins says.

This will be Audley's first office in the United States, and it's aimed at serving the entire country, at least at the start. (Simkins says it's possible that demand could eventually lead to a second office on the West Coast.) Many of the agents are trained by going on trips for four to six weeks in the countries that they'll specialize in.

Audley's agents, or "country sales specialists," work with travelers on a one-on-one basis before, during and after their trips to help plan their itineraries and make the trips go smoothly. The costs of the ... Read more »

    Travel Pillow Reviews:

We've all tried sleeping on an airplane or in a car only to have our neck suddenly fall forward and jar us awake. Some people can never even get comfortable enough to fall asleep in the first place. I have traveled back and forth from the west coast to Europe several times this year and I finally broke down and bought a travel pillow to try and help. I wanted something that would not only support my neck and head, but also allow me to get much needed rest on those 11 hour flights. The pillow they give you on board the planes are terrible and offer very little support. I used to try and get 2 pillows from the flight attendant and push them together but it never really improved things. Travel pillows are relatively cheap and definitely worth the investment if you travel a lot on airplanes. Many of ... Read more »

Find a tour operator with top scores in sustainable practices, quality of service, spirit of adventure, more.

One afternoon in 1978 I found myself standing on the roof of a Land Rover in Kenya, watching the Samburu National Reserve an arid stretch of the northern frontier roamed by rare wildlife and camera-wielding tourists go up in flames. This was the heyday of mass safari resorts, and while large operators raked in millions, the Samburu people, the ones the park was named after, weren't benefiting. Frustrated by this injustice, they'd rather imprudently torched the savanna. As gerenuks, impalas, and giraffes bounded to safer ground, I helped the park warden and his rangers, many of them in sandals, beat the fire back.

How could a booming safari industry let its rangers go bootless and leave its local people disenfranchised? In the ensuing years, I met others David Western in Kenya, Stanley Selengut in the Caribbean, Pradeep Sanghala in India who shared ... Read more »

    Best Countries for Solo Travelers

By Everett Potter September 5, 2014

There are many travelers who claim that traveling alone is the best way to see the world. You deliberately travel solo, they say, because you want to experience the world without the influence of a friend or partner’s tastes, prejudices, or preferences. When you’re with a companion, it’s easy to focus on that person and forget about meeting other travelers. Traveling alone, you’re more likely to be on a voyage of self-discovery.

Solo travel can be delightfully self-indulgent. You can spend a day doing nothing but café hopping or lingering in a single museum. You can loll on a beach on the South China Sea or hire a guide to visit remote ruins. Indulge your classical music passion in one of Europe’s great concert halls or join a group of like-minded strangers for a Himalayan trek.

It’s your call. Solo travel is the ideal opportunity to try something new, like a surf c ... Read more »

    World s Top Airlines

By Melanie Lieberman July 6, 2015

Decades ago, flying was an incredible privilege. Travelers would don their sharpest duds and dine on real, non-plastic glassware. Boarding the plane meant settling into cushy—and dare we say it: spacious—seats for a few hours of relaxation, bubbly, and spectacular views of the world 30,000 feet below.

The World’s Best airlines, as selected by our readers, are fighting to bring back the Golden Age of air travel. Instead of cutting corners (read: leg room) they’re rolling out 82-inch-long beds fitted with natural mattresses and custom Italian linens. Instead of charging for that depressing bag of salted peanuts, they’re presenting a la carte menus designed by Michelin-starred chefs. Even in economy, passengers enjoy in-flight entertainment on HD-enabled screens while juicing up their devices via personal USB chargers.

A comprehensive ranking of the world's top outfitters—surveyed, sorted, and scored.

For the second time in as many years, we’ve conducted an unprecedented survey of adventure travel companies, based on the idea that a traveler’s most important decision is not always where to go but who to go with. For the 2009 edition, we spoke to more guide services—and their clients—than ever before (248 in all). We contacted companies that lead 85,000 people a year and those that cater to a hundred. We surveyed paddling outfitters, trekking guides, safari specialists, and the ones that do it all. We evaluated companies that will take you places you’ve only dreamed of (the Tibetan Plateau, the Serengeti on foot) and those that specialize in your own backyard (the Grand Canyon, the Grand Tetons).

Embarking on a six-month or year-long adventure often can mean taking a leap of faith and leaving key responsibilities behind, like arranging for an extended leave of absence or resigning from a job. But those that have done it say the experience is more than worth it.

A honey-coloured gem set in the leafy south-west of England; Bath is one of the UK s most idyllic cities. More than most other developed countries, Australia seizes the imagination. For most visitors its name is a shorthand for an endless summer where the living is easy; a place where the adventures are as vast as the horizons and the jokes flow as freely as the beer; a country of can-do spirit and easy friendliness. No wonder Australians call theirs the Lucky Country.

Every aspect of Australian life and culture, whether its matey attitudes or its truly great outdoors, is a product of its scale and population – or lack of it. In size, it rivals the USA, yet its population is 23 million, leading to one of the lowest country population densities on Earth. The energy of its contemporary culture is in contrast to a landscape that is ancient and often looks it: much of central and western Australia – the bulk of the country – is overwhelmingly arid and flat. In contrast, its cities, most founded as recently as the mid-nineteenth century, burst wit ... Read more »

    LGBTI Travel Information

By fighting for the rights of so many others, we realize that "gay rights are human rights, and human rights are gay rights." Secretary Clinton – December 6, 2011 Attitudes and tolerance toward lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) persons vary from country to country, just as they vary among U.S. cities and states. Most LGBTI travelers encounter no problems while overseas, but it helps to be prepared and research your destination before you go. There are a number of countries that provide legal protections to those who are LGBTI. Unfortunately, there are others that do not, and a significant number that even criminalize consensual same-sex sexual relations. Persons convicted in these countries could be sentenced to prison, and/or be punished by fines, deportation, flogging, or even sentenced to death. Introducing Australia

Is the grass always greener on the other side of the fence? Peek over the pickets and find out. This vast country is affluent, multicultural and laced with natural splendour.

    Why I Love Australia

By Charles Rawlings-Way Meg Worby, Writers

I've been living in this great southern land for 30-something years, and there are still places I haven't explored. Australia is just so damn big. Even if we spent the next 30-something years on an endless round-Australia road trip, there'd still be surprises out there. And that, for a restless road-addict, is a very comforting reality.

    Hip Cities

Most Australians live along the coast, and most of these folks live in cities – 89% of Australians, in fact. It follows that cities here are a lot of fun. Sydney is a glamorous collusion of beaches, boutiques and bars. Melbourne is all arts, alleyways and Aussie Rules football. Brisbane is a subtropical t ... Read more »

    a village in Namibia

This tranquil little desert town is situated 125km east of Luderitz and the name means 'out' in German, but may be derived from a Khoi-Khoi word which means the 'place of the snakes'. Aus is tucked between the folds of several hills, and if you've ventured this far, then the chances are you're on the way to the coast.

After the German surrender to South African troops in World War I, Aus became an internment camp for German military officers. As many as 1,550 prisoners were held at Aus. and the towns population was further boosted by around 600 South African guards.

The railway to Luderitz stops here, as some years ago the continual struggle to keep the line clear of the Namib Desert sand was abandoned, and in places the line is now covered by massive dunes. One of the major attractions of the area around Aus is the Namib Feral Horses. They are the world's only wild desert-dwelling horses and theories as to their origin are ma ... Read more »

Argentina is Cheap Again (If You Follow This Advice)

When I put out the first edition of The World s Cheapest Destinations at the end of 2002, Argentina was one of the best travel values in the world and it stayed that way for quite a while. Reeling for a huge banking collapse and currency crisis, the local peso went from parity to the dollar to a rate of three to the dollar when the dust settled, without any change in prices.

After a while though, even though the exchange rate kept widening, inflation galloped even faster. As tourism picked up and hotels were able to fill their rooms, rates for those went up as well. With an inefficient and pricey airline system, combined with very long distances for buses, eventually Argentina drifted out of budget travel ter ... Read more »

    Introducing Asia

Above all, Asia is a spiritual place - infused with the gods of past and present: the ancient spirits of the land and the family, the teachings of Buddhism, the deities of Christianity and Hinduism and the rules of Islam. Across the region, scented smoke swirls from millions of joss sticks placed in offering at the many shrines and temples the faithful use to meditate and pray.

But, Asia is far more than its past. A frenetic buzz surrounds the cities: the fashion, culture and business in Hong Kong. Singapore and many others easily challenges the biggest European and American cities for their status as global hubs.

    Around the World With Kids

The Davis family poses for a group photo in the Thar Desert. (Photograph by Heather Greenwood Davis)

It sounds like such a romantic notion: Leaving everything behind but the family you’ve created together and heading out to see the world.

And in many ways, the trip I took with my husband, Ish, and our two sons, Ethan (then 8) and Cameron (then 6), was exactly that.

And in so many ways it wasn’t.

Our around-the-world-trip was not borne out of well-thought-out planning or a “budgeting to the penny” lifestyle. We were simply a young family struggling under the weight of routine and obligation. We wanted something different. And we went out into the world to find it.

When you become a parent, routine is your ... Read more »
