How to Use Question or Answer Piping:

A. To create Question Piping:

  1. Click the Design icon to access the Edit Survey mode.
  2. Click Add Question to create your initial question as a Multiple Choice - One Answer Allowed. Ex: Q1 - What is your favorite breed of dog? Answer Choices: Labrador, Boxer or Beagle.
  3. Click Save Close and create more questions.
  4. Later in the survey, click the Add Question button to create another question (Q5), which is the follow-up to populate the answer from Q1. Ex: Q5 -When thinking about the [insert breed of dog answer from Q1], what is your favorite characteristic?
  5. As you are typing the text for Q5 into the Question Text box creator, leave your cursor where you want the Piping feature added. (Ex: When thinking about the [leave your cursor here] breed of dog, what is your favorite characteristic?)
  6. Click the Insert response from. button located underneath the Question Text box.
  7. A menu opens to show you any questions that allow piping. In this example, choose Q1.
  8. In the Question Text box, you will then see the question presented as: When thinking about the [Q1] breed of dog, what is your favorite characteristic?

B. To create Answer Piping:

You can apply the same process to pipe a previously selected answer as a possible answer choice of a follow-up question.

  • This time when you create the follow-up, while you are in the Answer Choices text box, click the Insert response from. button.
  • If Q1 is What is your favorite breed of dog?
  • From Q1 you want to pipe the dog breed answer as a possible choice into a follow-up.

Example:

Q1. What is your favorite dog breed?

a.) Labrador

b.) Boxer

c.) Beagle

d.) Other ______

Q2. Which breed of dog do you consider to have the best temperament?

a.) [q1]

b.) German Shepherd

c.) Golden Retriever

d.) Other ______

If the respondent picked Boxer in Q1, then where you see [Q1] in the design, the respondent would see their answer choice of Boxer populated there.
