How Much We Spent Traveling in Europe for Two Months

When Andy and I set off on our Beyond Vacation kick-off trip. I decided to keep track of every penny we spent. There were two reasons for this. We ve never really tracked our travel spending, and I wanted to know how much it costs for us to travel for more than a week or two. And I wanted to be able to share with you how much it costs to travel to the places we visited in Europe. I will have posts later that break down our spending by location, but for now here s an overview of how much we spent traveling in Europe for two months.

A quick look at how much we spent

The following amounts are for two people. All numbers are listed first in euros, second in US dollars.

2,959.40€ / $3,924.47 accommodation

1,335.60€ / $1,771.31 trains

295.60€ / $391.81 other transportation

2,056.78€ / $2,726.21 food and alcohol

How Adventure Travel Works

Up Next

Imagine yourself paddling a kayak through the dense belly of the Amazon rainforest. Can you picture walking side by side with the mighty elephants of Africa. Maybe a bike trek along the Great Wall of China or a cattle drive through Patagonia is more your speed. How does traveling into outer space sound? If any of these wild trips sound like a great way to spend your holiday, then adventure travel may be for you.

One of the fastest-growing trends in the travel business is adventure tourism. Defining exactly what it means is a little tricky. For some, adventure could mean leisurely biking and hiking tours. For others, it might entail BASE jumping into an underground cave in Mexico. The main facets of adventure tourism usually include traveling to a distant location, interacting with different cultures and undertaking a physical activity of some kind.

#Avoid Disability Discrimination When Hiring New Employees

The Americans with Disabilities Act has very strict rules about what employers can and cannot ask during the hiring process.

Of all the anti-discrimination laws, none is more confusing to employers more than the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), especially when it comes to hiring. Employers want to make sure that the person they hire can actually perform the job, but often don't know how to explore this issue without running afoul of the law.

If you remember one simple rule, you'll be in good shape: You can ask people about their abilities, but you can't ask about their disabilities. This means that you can ask how an applicant plans to perform each function of the job, but you can not ask whether the applicant has any disabilities that will prevent him or her from performing those functions.

One way to ensure that you stay within the rules is to attach a detailed job de ... Read more »

How to Become a Travel Writer

Novelist and T+L contributing editor Gary Shteyngart on how he travels, and why.

A few years back a friend of mine took me out to eat with several recent college graduates. As soon as I was introduced as a novelist, the cheerful, sangria-fueled table stopped chattering as my new friends tried to digest exactly what that meant. “So…you…write…books.” It reminded me of one of the first questions I was asked at a reading after my first book came out: “What’s the difference between, like, fiction and a novel?” Since that reading took place in Los Angeles, the next question was to be expected: “So who directed your book?”

This time around, I knew to head off the conversation at the pass immediately. “I also write about travel,” I said, to a chorus of “Wow!” and “Awesome!” and “Where was the last place you went?” and “Isn’t Bangkok’s new airport the bomb?”

The ascendancy of travel writing as a serious endeavor is ... Read more »

How to Become a Travel Writer

    By: Guest Column | November 11, 2013

Each person in the audience fights the bull along with the torero, not by following the flight of the cape, but by using another imaginary one that moves differently than the one in the ring.

—Federico García Lorca, Poem of the Bull

Nearly everyone loves to travel, and many of us wrote a really great story in Junior High, so often people feel it would be easy  to become a travel writer.  But to me, it is like entering the ring in Madrid s Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas to face a raging bull, waving, instead of a cape, Hemingway s truest sentence you know .

All good travel writing moves the reader twice: it transports him to a place, and moves him emotionally.

How To Book Cheap Flights Air Travel Deals

I have a long list of cheap trips under my belt, and I love talking travel with whoever wants to listen, and not only to encourage them to travel often but to consider doing it cheaply. If someone wants to stay at the Ritz, I don t discourage them, but most people think they can t afford travel and don t know how to find bargains, and therefore often decide to stay home. But you don t need to be confined to your home, in my opinion. If you know how to find good deals, you can travel more often, stay longer at your destination, or actually take that distant trip you ve been pining for.

A flight you find midweek, after midnight, may well by much cheaper than one on a Saturday afternoon, because of when airlines update their systems.

While it's fun to travel with a group of friends or loved ones, solo travel has its own set of joys -- and annoyances. How to Save on One-Way Flights

Historically, one-way tickets cost roundtrip dollars; that is, you'd pay almost as much for a single one-way ticket as you would for a roundtrip ticket to the same destination. Fortunately for thrifty flyers, domestic discount airlines and travel booking sites have entered the mix and now offer reasonably priced one-way tickets. Although the big airlines still charge roundtrip prices (or more) for many international routes, and certain one-way trips could cost hundreds or even thousands more than similar roundtrip itineraries, they have lately become more competitive for domestic one-way fares. Travelers still need to have a few tricks up their sleeves in order to avoid one-way highway robbery.

Why are some one-way flights so expensive? I asked George Hobica, founder of AirfareWatchdog.com. wh ... Read more »

#I Math Ask You a Question

Look, can we quit it with the conflation of arithmetic and higher mathematics?

I have dyscalculia. My teachers gave up on teaching me to perform basic arithmetic in tenth grade. I struggle with anything below trigonometry, and even trig is hard for me.

I have a bachelor s in pure math and a master s in statistics. Calculus? I can do that. Abstract algebra? I m there. Topology and probability theory? Awesome. (Don t ask me to do combinatorics, though. Don t know why, but my brain nopes out on that one.)

I am SICK AND TIRED of reassuring kids I teach who come into our intro stats or calc courses going I m bad at math and expecting to fail. A good three quarters of the time I probe further and discover they failed or nearly failed algebra because they struggle with arithmetic, and now they re convinced they re going to fail anything that even looks like it might possibly be adjacent to math.

    #Ask the doctor: Coconut oil

    Harvard Health Letter

    Q. I have started noticing more coconut oil at the grocery store and have heard it is better for you than a lot of other oils. Is that true?

    A. I've also noticed that coconut oil seems to be catching on these days. Coconut oil is about 90% saturated fat, which is a higher percentage than butter (about 64% saturated fat), beef fat (40%), or even lard (also 40%). Too much saturated fat in the diet is unhealthy because it raises "bad" LDL cholesterol levels, which increases the risk of heart disease. So it would seem that coconut oil would be bad news for our hearts.

But what's interesting about coconut oil is that it also gives "good" HDL cholesterol a boost. Fat in the diet, whether it's saturated or unsaturated, tends to nudge HDL levels up, but coconut oil seems to be especially potent at doing so.

Saturated fat is divided ... Read more »

How to Travel to Cuba If You Are an American

Islands have always been a part of my life: I was born on Long Island, and moved from there to Rhode Island -- my current home, centered on the richness of Narragansett Bay -- as a young adult. But I never had a true appreciation of island life until I visited the Caribbean. How to Visit Tibet

    Special Permission

You'll need to apply for a standard travel visa to pass through China on your way to the Tibet Autonomous Region. You'll also need a special permit to enter Tibet. Tour agencies can usually help you apply for the three-month permit, but it's not a guarantee that the Chinese government will approve it. The U.S. State Department warns that even if you get a permit, much of the region is off-limits to foreigners. After arriving in Tibet, you'll need to apply for a Border Travel Permit at the Public Security Bureau in Lhasa if you want to travel around the region, including to the Nepal border crossing along the Friendship Highway. Restricted areas may expand and any access to Tibet could be blocked to foreign tourists at a moment's notice, such as if the Chinese government wants to keep foreigners away from places that have seen recent protests against Beijing rule.
