The volcanic island of Mauritius is renowned for its natural beauty and vast expanses of white sand, which puts it high on my list of destinations to visit during my lifetime. And I don’t think I’m alone; the enchanting isle attracts holidaymakers in their thousands every month – especially to the eastern region.

It’s little wonder the area has such appeal, the idyllic landscape of the island’s eastern region comprises palm-lined beaches and deep blue lagoons, while the tropical climate means you can escape the dull skies and drizzle at home and work on your tan at one of the many beaches. If you want to find out which sandy spots are the best to visit in east Mauritius, read on.

Among the most famous beaches on the whole island, Belle Mare is a must-visit for beach bums. The resort is quiet and luxurious, and the beach itself is known as one of Mauritius’s longest and most beautiful stretches of sand.

The stunning white beach is lined with lush greenery and the water is a deep, clear blue, giving it a paradisiacal appearance that I for one have only ever encountered in daydreams. The temperature of the sea around Mauritius’s beaches rarely drops below 23 degrees C, so if you fancy a swim there’s no need to worry about the water being too cold. What’s more, there are virtually no waves here, so even non-swimmers and children can paddle safely in the shallow areas.

If you’re keen to head underwater and admire the marine life, you’ll find the surrounding lagoons ideal for snorkelling and diving, and many firms run guided excursions from the beach at Belle Mare.

Blue Bay Beach

Further down from Belle Mare is Blue Bay Beach, another popular bathing spot. The beach here is a good place to visit if you want to get active during a stay in a hotel in the east of Mauritius, as there are opportunities to get involved in a range of watersports here.

During the week, the main beach is quiet and secluded, while the weekends see an influx of people, many of whom are keen to indulge their passion for sailing and windsurfing. If you want to try out a thrilling pastime, feel free, but I’d rather embark on a tamer yet equally enjoyable excursion – snorkelling.

The activity is another popular pastime, and the coral reefs to be found under the surface around Blue Bay are both unique and beautiful. You can find out more about the underwater ecosystems by calling in at the marine park’s visitor centre, which is opposite the beach.

There are plenty of amenities close to the beach, from showers and toilets to food stalls where you can pick up a burger or some egg-fried rice, so you can easily make a day of it.

Poste Lafayette Beach

If it’s awe-inspiring scenery you’re after, the beach at Poste Lafayette offers just that. Located between Belle Mare and Roches Noires, Poste Lafayette Beach is backed by sheer cliffs, and the water here crashes against the rocks in spectacular scenes of wild nature.

The untamed landscape means the beach is lesser trodden than its calmer, better-known counterparts, but this makes it all the more appealing if you want to spend some time admiring the untouched, rugged beauty of the area away from throngs of tourists.

Consider Puerto Rico during Thanksgiving  (click for hotel deals) for a little spice on this American holiday. The love of food and family gatherings makes Thanksgiving a local favorite. Large families gather across the island for an exquisite meal full of local delights.

The boricuas lavish feast is a tropical twist on an American tradition. Like the islanders, there is a mix of Spanish and Taino Indian recipes that complete the meal. For starters, pastelillitos, alcapurrias and bacalaitos, bite sized local fried turnovers. Some morcilla, or chorizos dipped in wine or even some Spanish tortilla just as an introduction to the best that is yet to come.

Main course, the turkey, which is marinated much like Puerto Ricans would marinate and cook the roasted pork, with garlic, apple cider vinegar, adobo, and sometimes even orange juice. Stuffing varies from family to family and is usually not your ordinary American stuffing. Some birds are stuffed with mofongo, picadillo (ground beef mixture), or even rice. Mofongo would be the closest texture of American stuffing except it is a mixture of fried mashed plantains, garlic and chicharron (pork crackling). The traditional Puerto Rican stuffing, picadillo, is a mixture of cooked ground beef, ground pork, peppers, green Spanish olives and raisins.

The plethora of side dishes is what makes this feast so lavish. Guineitos en escabeche, green bananas boiled and pickled with onions and capers. Arroz con gandules, yellow rice with pigeon peas. Tostones, smashed and deep fried green plantains. Amarillos, ripe yellow sweet plantains deep fried to perfection. Amarillos en almibar, yellow ripe plantain casserole made with syrup, cinnamon and butter. Yucca frita o en escabeche, deep fried yucca root or pickled with onions and capers.

Not your ordinary pies for dessert, instead arroz con leche, sweet rice flavored with raisins and cinnamon. Flan de coco, de queso o de vainilla, delicious custard made with coconut, cheese or just plain vanilla. Tembleque, a traditional Puerto Rican coconut and cinnamon custard is also served. Tres leches or trozos de guayaba y lechosa with local farmer’s cheese will complete the menu.

Of course, to wash it all down a nice cold Medalla (local beer), a cuba-libre, a mojito, or a glass of coquito. Coquito is a local holiday drink (compared to the eggnog) made with coconut milk, sweetened condensed milk, rum, brandy and spices.

You might want to loosen up your belt a notch or two because eating too much is a common symptom from any holiday spent in Puerto Rico

Search. Eat. Enjoy!

Old San Juan is the culinary capital of Puerto Rico. Here you will find all kinds of delights which will make you want to come back for more. There’s no need to stray too far from your ship, just across the street from the port of call is a plethora of restaurants just waiting to serve you.

A free cocktail at the Don Q tasting room and store right across Pier 1 should put you in the Puerto Rican mood. Here, you will learn a brief synopsis on how the delicious Puerto Rican rum is made and why they chose the name DON Q. After browsing through their store, make sure you ask for a refreshing pina colada or a taste of the finest dark rum on the rocks

Just a few steps across Pier 2 is the delicious Mofongo (moh’ – fun –go) Criollo Cuisine and Bar. Aside from the lovely atmosphere, here you may indulge on Puerto Rico’s finest delicacy. The assorted Puerto Rican Appetizers for 2, “Antojitos criollos” introduces you to the burst of “criollo” flavors. Some bacalaitos, fried cheese balls, and sorullitos concoct this yummy appetizer. Perfect pairing for such hors d’oeuvres is a nice cold Medalla, our local beer.

Make sure you stop by with a hearty appetite, because for main course mofongo is the ultimate Puerto Rican dish. This delicacy is made with once fried green plantains which are then mashed into a “pilon” (mortar) with garlic and crunchy “chicharones” (pork rinds). This mixture is then stuffed with your choice of chicken, shrimp, skirt steak, shredded Angus beef, or my favorite lobster. It is served with either “criollo” or garlic sauce. Absolutely perfect!

Mofongo Criollo Cuisine and Bar also serves your regular cheeseburger, chicken tenders and pizza for the kids, along with a full menu of other wonderful Puerto Rican dishes.

Just a block away from the pier on Plaza Covadonga is a small place called Punto de Vista. Here you will find an assortment of both Puerto Rican and International delights. From sandwiches to pasta to arroz mamposteado this cozy place is one to at least stop in and have a cold Medalla, or perhaps a rum and coke or cuba-libre. To mellow your buzz, an order of Tostones en canasta rellenos de Camarones would do the trick. Twice fried plantains popped open and stuffed with Shrimp…delicious! A little pique on top and you’ve got yourself a very special traditional appetizer

Walking off all the yummy food is a great way to pass the time while in port. West of the piers is a nice easy walk on La Princessa . On the weekends, street vendors selling local treats and art work take spot along the walkway. Old San Juan is a beautiful area to explore, if you have more than a few hours to spare, make sure you spend some time here. There are many places to see and a lot more places to go and feast.

Local Lingo: Puertorican Cocktails

Whether lounging around the pool, sunning on the beach, or sampling the local watering holes, you might be in the mood for something different. Why not try a Puerto Rican favorite?

Puerto Rico is famous for its rums, so the local drinks favor this spirit almost exclusively. Below you will find descriptions and recipes for a few classics and maybe a surprise or two. Note that there are many, many different drinks that can be made with rum, thus we’d like to make this Part One of many.

RUM COKE – Everyone knows this one. A shot or two of rum (usually the more flavorful Gold rum) in a glass of ice, topped with the cola of your choice. Want to add a hint of sophistication? Throw in a lime wedge and call it a CUBA LIBRE.

MOJITO (moe – hee’ – toe) – This Puerto Rican summertime favorite combines the tastes of rum, lime and mint to create a cool sensation. In a glass without ice, place several large, fresh mint leaves with a teaspoon of finely granulated sugar and the juice of half a lime. Take a “muddler” (a long wooden stick with a blunt end) and grind (or muddle) the leaves into the sugar and lime juice. This will break the leaves up slightly to release some mint flavor. Add a couple of ounces of light (white) rum, then fill the glass with ice. Top the glass off with carbonated water, add a sprig of mint for decoration and enjoy.

PINA COLADA – The origins of the Pina Colada are often contested, with several restaurants and hotels laying claim as the inventor. Regardless, most Pina Coladas are similar in nature, only different in ingredients. Experiment with different techniques and types of rum to find your favorite. For an individual serving, add a couple shots of light (white) rum, a jigger of Cream of Coconut (usually branded like Coco Lopez; DO NOT get coconut MILK by mistake…), a couple of ounces of pineapple juice and ? cup of ice to a blender and blend until smooth. Garnish with a slice of pineapple. To create a larger batch for parties, mix together 1 can (15 ounces) of Cream of Coconut, 32 ounces of light rum and 6 cups (48 ounces) of pineapple juice in a large container. Refrigerate until ready to serve, either over ice in a large glass or blended together with ? cup of ice for a frozen treat.

DAIQUIRI – Most people associate tequila with Daiquiris, but the traditional daiquiri is made with rum. In a cocktail shaker, add a couple of shots of light (white) rum, juice from lime, a teaspoon of finely granulated sugar (or simple syrup) and cracked ice. Shake well, strain into a martini glass, and garnish with a lime slice. For a cooler drink, place all ingredients (including ? cup of ice) into a blender and blend until smooth.

Your experience of a place would not be complete without a taste of its culinary offerings. In Puerto Rico, its criolla dishes are a must-try although international and fusion cuisines are also served in a lot of restaurants. Dining options run the gamut from upscale places to casual diners. The capital, San Juan, offers a wide and interesting variety of restaurants and is the perfect place for the ultimate Puerto Rican food experience.

Comida criolla or creole food refers to the local cuisine in Puerto Rico. It s a melting pot (no pun intended) of traditional Taino food, Spanish culinary influence, and African cooking. Some of the most popular criolla dishes are lechon asado (roasted pork), adobo (seasoning made of vinegar, paprika, oil, garlin, and oregano), asopoa de pollo (stewed chicken), habichuelas (rice and red beans served with meat), and sofrito (a sauce made of cilantro onion, garlic, pepper, and other seasonings and spices). Criolla cooking also features several manners of cooking plantains. There s tostones which is mashed green plantains, platanos which slightly varies from tostones in cooking style, and mofongo which is a ball of crushed plantains mixed with meat or seafood that were fried and flavored with seasonings such garlic and tomato-based sauce.

Being nestled in the abundant waters of the Caribbean, Puerto Rico certainly cannot do without seafood cuisines. The tastiest seafood dishes can be found in the coastal cities. The Caribbean lobster is one of the premier catches in restaurants although the dolphinfish and red snapper are popular as well. The most well-known seafood specialty however would probably be the conch stuffed with tomato for a fritter or served with a ceviche salad.

To further promote criolla cuisine to travelers, the government has created the Mesones Gastronomicos program. In this project, the 30 participating restaurants throughout the island will all serve traditional Puerto Rican fare. It doesn t mean though that you can only taste authentic criolla cooking in these dining places. Smaller restaurants that offer native cuisines abound in San Juan and the rest of Puerto Rico.

Other upscale restaurants specialize in what is called the Nuevo Latino cuisine, a culinary style similar to criolla but predominantly uses fruits, fish, and tubers as main ingredients with tropical marinades and dark rum sauces as primary flavors. Most ingredients in Nuevo Latino cooking are locally sourced so as to maximize the fresh flavors of the produce. Restaurants serving this cuisine are mostly found in San Juan and other bigger cities of Puerto Rico. Tourists who crave for international cuisines won t be disappointed as well. There are a lot of dining areas in San Juan that serve Italian, French, Arabian, Mexican, American, German, and Latin American dishes.

Along with the sumptuous food, another major part of Puerto Rican food is the beverage. This Caribbean island is also known for its strong drinks, its national beverage being the rum. There are about 20 different varieties of rum here. Puerto Rican coffee also packs a strong punch. It can be served as espresso, sweetened or with milk which is known as cafe con leche. If you re looking for a milder drink, you can try coco frio which is served on a chilled coconut and a selection of fresh fruit juices

Budget meals in Puerto Rico usually range from $5 to $15 while higher end dining can go up to $35. Upscale restaurants often require a dress code such as collared shirts for men and stylish apparel for women while the most expensive dining venues are usually black tie. Making a reservation is recommended especially from mid-November to April when tourists are usually flocking to Puerto Rico.

Two delicacies well known in Puerto Rican cuisine are both Amarillos and Tostones. Derived from the Plantain, they are cooked similarly but taste extremely different. When dining in Puerto Rico you will find different options to choose from as a side dish; plantains are a usual suspect on this list of options.

Whether yellow Amarillos or green Tostones, the Plantain is a delicious Puerto Rican treat that may well become the main attraction rather than just a side dish. Consider these instead of French fries or chips when visiting any restaurant in Puerto Rico.

A trip back in time

Call it Frankfurt’s best kept secret and my missed opportunity to enjoy a timeless experience. Jimmy’s Bar opened before the grand hotel with their little white door and doorbell in to welcome guests. Its warm decor of chocolate brown tones against the soft candlelight takes you back to a time you probably didn’t get to experience. There is live music from the piano and some of the best mixologists working for as long as I have been alive. You can even buy a nice cigar and channel your inner Winston Churchill. Unfortunately, my timing was awful and I was not able to have this experience.

As if the hotel wasn’t already impressive enough, 2015 brought a massive new projects for the Hessicher Hof Hotel. To get yet another star to make them even more luxe, a Wellness area was  added. Currently, guests can enjoy massage treatments in their room and can walk a few meters to the gym. But, they want to provide everything in house by making a Spa Wellness area that will bring additional comfort.

At first glance, the hotel can sort of creep on you, because it doesn’t scream “I am a Beyond 5 Star Hotel” (Which is kind of neat), but it will get a face lift. I can only imagine what elegant design will be in place to match such exquisiteness inside.

Our executive bedroom

My guy and I fit comfortably in our 55 sq. meter executive room. I know a hotel room is spacious when he can fit in the bed and the bathtub.

Porcelain pieces from Napoleon

For 28 euros a day, you can enjoy a deluxe breakfast in the restaurant Serves, featuring gifts from Emperor Napoleon. It is truly an International breakfast with German sausages, Belgian Pancakes, American Cereals and even Japanese Sushi. It is also a champagne breakfast which means you can really enjoy waking up!

I am hungry for everything.

The hotel caters to all kind of travelers- business, romantic, family and even solo travelers who want to recharge and relax. I can only imagine with the addition of the wellness spa that this will be the perfect place to balance an exciting stay in Frankfurt with serenity and comfort just a few meters away.
