Solo travel

Adventures for solo travellers

Explore adventures are ideal for solo travellers. It can be daunting to travel on your own, especially in countries where English isn’t widely spoken and the culture is very different from home. As a solo traveller with Explore you can expect to be in good company, with around half the group travelling solo, while the other half are travelling as couples or friends.

Apart from providing security and peace of mind, joining a small group adventure is also great for sharing all the experience with your fellow travellers. Whether you’re exploring an ancient site, wandering through a market or winding up the day at a local restaurant, you’ll enjoy it all much more if you’re sharing the experiences with a small group of like-minded travelling companions.

By their very nature Explore trips attract people who love travel - seeing new places, enjoying new experiences and meeting new people. Whatever your age and however experienced or inexperienced a traveller you are, you will be more than welcome as a solo traveller on one of our small group trips. You may join alone, but by the end you’ll feel as though you’re travelling with a group of friends.

Frequently asked questions

If you have any questions or concerns about joining one of our trips as a solo traveller please give us a call. Or alternatively have a look below at the questions we are most frequently asked by solo travellers who haven’t yet experienced one of our small group tours:

- If I travel solo do I have to pay a single supplement?

No - we have no compulsory single supplements. On our tours the accommodation is on a shared basis in twin rooms, at no additional charge. This means that as a solo traveller you will share a room with someone else of the same sex and, as far as possible, of roughly the same age.

- What if I want a single room?

On most of our trips we offer the option to pay a little extra for a room of your own (a Single Room Option). The extra cost is listed on each tour’s Dates Prices page. On some tours a single room may not be available at certain overnight stops, depending on the style of accommodation. Individual Tour Notes include more detail on this.

- Will the group be full of couples or solo travellers?

On Explore trips the average ratio between solo travellers and others (whether couples or friends) is approximately 50:50.

- Are other single travellers mainly women or men?

Generally the split between women and men travelling solo on our trips is 60:40, so you won't feel outnumbered.

- What age will the rest of my group be?

We have a great mix of people of all ages on our tours, ranging from their 20s to their 60s and over. You'll be with other travellers who often share similar interests to yours. From experience we’ve found that a good, mixed range of ages in the group makes the experience all the more fun.

- How can I find out who else is booked?

If you’d like to check who is already booked on any particular tour please just call us. We can tell you how many other solo travellers there are, what the ratio of males to females is and give you an idea of the groups’ age profile.

- What happens in the evenings?

Most evenings your trip leader will organise a group meal. It’s very flexible: you can choose whether to join the group or to do your own thing. Other evenings your leader may recommend one or more restaurants in the local area. Again you can choose whether or not to eat with some or all of your fellow travellers.

- What are the benefits of joining a small group adventure rather than just travelling on my own?

• You can often visit places as a group which might be intimidating to go to alone

• In company you often feel less conspicuous and can relax and enjoy yourself more easily

• Our groups are small enough to be flexible but large enough to ensure everyone fits in and has fun

• You'll meet other solo travellers - in fact many people make life-long friendships on our trips

• Our leaders help you stay safe and get the most out of the country you're visiting

With Explore you can relax and enjoy the destination, the activities and the experiences with a small group of like-minded travellers, while the trip leader takes care of all the organisation and logistics. It’s also a great way to meet new people.
