You can ask your bank to raise your ATM limit while you travel.

You DO need to inform your ATM bank and your credit card companies that you will be in Europe BEFORE you go!!

There is no perfect way to do this.

YOUR banks charge fees for ATM withdrawals AND to buy euros from them.

You have to add up the fees and see which is better for you!

Capital One, and Schwab offer ATM cards and/or credit cards that have small or no fees. Some people order cards just for travel.

The pre loaded cards give poor exchange rates and charge fees to reload or to change the euros back to $$s. Any way you do it will cost money.

We just figure it as part of the cost of the vacation!

When it comes to train travel in Europe. the big question is always the same: is it better to purchase a railpass or point-to-point tickets? Railpass marketing is persuasive, and I'm often emailed by travellers who want to make two or three train trips which could easily be booked online for €30 ($40) each, asking if they should buy a $500 railpass.  So check out these four different options before assuming you need a pass! These prices were correct at the time of writing so please use them as a rough guide only!

Option 1: Invest in a railpass

When to use it: If you intend to clock up a fair old mileage and (crucially) want to stay completely flexible, then a railpass can be the just the ticket. Europe -- By Plane or By Train?

Europe 's extensive network of railroads was once the only affordable option for folks traveling around the continent, but lately the rails have lost their supremacy. Discount airlines like Ryanair and easyJet have made jetting around the continent quicker and cheaper; in fact, Ryanair often offers sales with fares as low as 8 GBP (about $13.36 USD).

With fares this cheap, does it make sense even to consider traveling by train anymore? The answer: It depends. For one thing, the discount airlines aren't actually quite as cheap as they appear. Even if you do net an incredibly affordable flight, government taxes and fees bump the price up to at least $25 or $30.
