As a tourist, remain vigilant to protect your personal safety. Keep valuables in a money belt or inside pocket to reduce the risk of being pick-pocketed in public areas, and avoid wearing expensive jewelry or carrying valuable-looking items.

Travel Documents

U.S. citizens need a visa to visit India, and you should arrange yours in advance via the Indian embassy in Washington D.C. the U.S. State Department advises. Before you depart, make at least one photocopy of the information page of your passport and of the visa. When you arrive, make a copy of your entrance visa. If your passport is lost or stolen during your stay, these photocopies will make it easier to replace it and obtain the required exit visa.
