Upperside hindwing of summer form is mostly black with a short tail; that of winter form has much orange and a longer, violet-tipped tail. Question Mark (Polygonia interrogationis)

A North American nymphalid butterfly of the Nymphalidae family, which contains some 5,000 species. Many species are brightly colored and include popular species such as the emperor, admirals, tortoiseshells and fritillaries. Also called brush-footed butterflies or four-footed butterflies. The underside of the hind wing has a silver mark in the shape of a question mark, giving this species its name. The usual posture at rest is with the wings up, which serves to camouflage against predators.
