Britain s railway heritage is second to none, with no shortage of attractive journeys. From the delights of day trips from London, to further trips to discover the pastoral areas of England, castles and unspoiled countryside in Wales, or the scenic splendor of the lowlands and highlands of Scotland. And since British trains don t require reservations, you can board any train as long as you have a valid ticket or rail pass.

Train travel is also usually faster, safer, and less stressful than the alternatives. Plus, there are convenient, frequent departures and comfortable trains between all of England s main cities. London, Manchester, York, Chester and Birmingham provide easy connections, as well as linking to Edinburgh and Glasgow in Scotland, and Cardiff in Wales. Travel out of London for a great day trip to the mysterious Stonehenge, literary Stratford-upon-Avon, or soothing Bath in as little as an hour-and-a-half.

A beautiful train ride from London will take you to the glorious, mountainous Lake District in Northern England, home to an outstanding National Park with stunning scenery and an idyllic way of life. Or travel southwest to Devon and Cornwall, lovely farming and fishing centers with numerous seaside resorts.

Wales offers castle-rich Cardiff in the south and impressive wildlife in the north. Another great day trip, Cardiff can be reached from London in about two hours and offers frequent service. Chester is the gateway to northern Wales with connections to London, Manchester and Birmingham.

In addition to being Scotland s capital, Edinburgh is a major transportation hub and convenient train ride away from London. An entryway to some of Scotland s most rugged and spectacular scenery, why not travel north to Inverness or the Kyle of Lochalsh? You might even want to add Aberdeen or Perth to the top of your list, also easily reached by train.
