Formerly known as Wankie, the Hwange National Park is Zimbabwe’s largest game reserve. The Hwange National Park is situated in the west of Zimbabwe, on the road from Bulawayo to the Victoria Falls.

The Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe is almost 14 600 km2 in size and is home to 105 mammal species (including 8 large carnivores and 19 large herbivores). The Hwange National Park shelters one of the continent’s largest surviving packs of Africa wild dogs and the number of brown hyena is also significant. The number of elephant in the Hwange National Park is quite high – higher than that which a habitat such as this, which has been hit by a drought, can comfortably sustain. Nature experts are looking at various solutions.

Vegetation is relatively sparse in the Hwange National Park. It is a dry area, so man-made waterholes are spread right through the Park to help the animals cope with dry times.

There are three permanent camps in the Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. The main camp is in the south of the Hwange National Park and can easily be reached via a tar road from the route from Bulawayo to Victoria Falls. Sinamatella Camp is in the north of the Hwange National Park. You can reach Sinamatella Camp either via a short trip on a dirt road from the route from Bulawayo to Victoria Falls, or by travelling through the Hwange National Park from the Main Camp. This journey, however, takes several hours.
